Gorgeous foto Michele!

Your parade is like our 4th of July parade, Bob. Local doctors with kazoos, the Golden Lab brigade (the emblematic dog in Aspen) lots of animals like  my son-in-law's alpacas, a Burning Man float,  fire trucks spraying the crowds with water and candy, and more participants than spectators.

Sounds like you will be giving the Chinese students a real taste of the West.

We have a Classical music festival every summer (for 62 years) and I have been hosting a student the past 7 years since I have been an empty-nester. However, combinations of River's  family stay overnight when they have early days in Aspen for work and I get to wake up to those wonderful, smiling faces.

Last year I had a violinist from Beijiing while my son was in China presenting at the Boeing Factory and touring the country. It was a real exchange of,culture and an embodiment of the world as family, caring for each others sons.

Row your boat gently and merrily down the stream....

University in Chula Vista

A university in Chula Vista has been a topic for many years and a campaign promise of mayoral and council candidates.

The problem is--like a new Charger stadium--everyone wants it but there is no money.

The State of California now has 15 community colleges that offer four year degrees.  I think making Southwestern College a four year college maybe a more realistic approach.

Thats a good point George. Maybe we should re-elect you to bring some wisdom to the council.

UCSD set to acquire naming rights to trolley station.

According to a proposal set for consideration at the July 16 board meeting of the Metropolitan Transit System, the university would come up with an annual $675,000 from 2015 through 2018 for Blue Line trolley naming rights and related promotional perks. Thereafter, the annual payment would jump to $945,000 a year through 2044, bringing the total price of the contemplated package to about $27.7 million.

Old Town UC San Diego Health Campus South, kinda has a ring to it, no?

Our community college, Colorado Mt. College, relatively recently offered an AA degree, and now a few 4year degrees . Walter Isaacson, former editor of Time and now Presiden and CEO of the Aspen Institute, lends his name to a 4yr. degree in Media and Communications.

Ski racers who train here and compete in the winter go to  CMC, as well as those who want to work, live at home and go to college to save money, at least the first 2 years.  The nearest colleges are 100's of miles away, so commuting is not an option.Until recently, everyone moved away for higher education.

There have been talks here at the Aspen Institute, one by former NY mayor Michael Bloomberg, questioning the usefuness of  liberal arts degrees and the need for more technical trainings. But the Greeks felt a well-informed citizen was necessary for an effective democracy and cultural literacy is also a benefit. But with the cost of college and student debt, it is a viable question.

DISNEYLAND'S FIRST DAY: JULY 17th, 1955

Today is the 60th anniversary of the opening of Disneyland.

Recall that there were a number of posts and videos on early Disneyland on this Message Forum beginning with post 690 (about page 28).

One good website is Yesterland that has a lot of information and pictures of early Disneyland: http://www.yesterland.com/

Also, there are a lot of videos on YouTube on early Disneyland.

Cornelius Vanderbilt Wood was the VP and General manager for the Disneyland project.  He had a falling out with Walt Disney and left the company.  He went east and opened a park in the Bronx NY, similar to Disneyland. It was called Freedomland

Freedomland was opened in 1960 but did not last very long.  Below is a YouTube video.  Also there is a website:  www.freedomlandusa.net.

MOVIE MAGIC:  8MM MOVIES--Attempt at Special Effects

During my junior high days, some friends and I made 8mm movies.  I had a Wollensak 8mm camera with variable speed, three lens turret and single frame capability.

We tried some special effects, but obviously were not destined to be Hollywood bound.

The short movie is below.  You may recognize some of the "stars". In order of appearance:

1.  The nerd at the beginning is me.

2. Chuck Wischstadt (CVHS '64, CVJHS and Lilian J. Rice)

3. Chuck's younger brother Curt.

4. Marcia Durrant (HHS '63)

5. Linda Keating (our class) --- appears in the beginning and near the end of the movie.

6. Dale Gruel (HHS '65)

7. Randy Glover (our class)  Notice the Navy "mothball" fleet when Randy is water skiing.

8. Danny Garcia (HHS '65, also Lilian J Rice)

9. Danny's younger brother, Mike

Gillow for City Council!

Chula Vista divided by four

In 2012, Chula Vista voters approved Proposition B to divide their city of about 250,000 into four council districts. District voters would, from then on, elect one council member from among district residents. The mayor of Chula Vista would continue to be elected at-large.

That measure was completed this week when the city council voted to approve boundaries of four districts, each with a population of about 60,000.

It was not an easy process. Deciding district lines produced both alliances and disagreements, with some ethnic communities wanting to be grouped together and all fighting to have Southwestern College in their district.

Some residents believe that the west side of Chula Vista has been neglected, while newer developments such as Eastlake have flourished. They view the new districts as an antidote to the perceived favoritism.

Backing up a bit here....sorry I'm late to the party, but huge congrats to Terry, Addie and Molly on those fabulous twins! I'm SO happy for you! At those birth weights, they are strong and they will thrive. When you're a first-time grandparent, you know that you're going to be *very* happy and excited, but most people (including me) aren't prepared for the tsunami of emotions that sweep them up. It has the same degree of impact as having your own children, but in a whole different way. They are gifts that literally keep on giving. My fourth grandchild (a boy) was born two days ago, and I experienced that tsunami yet again. Terry, you and Addie are in for many years of sheer bliss.

Let me be the first to say, they look just like you. :-)

Doing some quick calcs, Molly was carrying about 13 lbs 10 oz. of babies. She does appear to be relieved and also appears to look just like Addie, if you know what I mean.

CHULA VISTA CITY COUNCIL DISTRICTS

A lot of the business and the development community opposed the redistricting of Chula Vista.  They argued that a representative of a district would not be concerned with the overall interests of all citizens.

But, I believe, the real reason is that big money will not have as much inpact on elections   It can cost up to $100K to run for City Council.  Most of that money comes from special interests.

With a district of 60,000, it is possible to run a low cost, grass roots campaign.  Volunteers and a candidate can meet most voters by going door-to-door.  The high cost of TV and radio is not needed as much.

The argument of not representing all citizens does not make any sense.  Most large cities like San Diego have district elections.  Also Congress and State legislatures are basically district elections.

Some people argued that districts should be drawn up according to voter turnout rather than population.  But a counter argument is that people who do not vote need to be represented and by not voting they essentially are selecting others to make a choice.  They are voting by proxy.

Running for office takes time and is not for someone who enjoys the freedom of retirement.

Here is the ethnic breakdown of the districts:

Just watched the memorial video for Dewain Short (#1364). I didn't know Dewain but remember Naleen from High School. A short (no pun intended surprise) "small world" story. In 1982-84 my sons started racing MotoX in Ramona at the Barona Oaks MotoX track. Naleen's son Justin was also there racing, along with Tom Liscum's son Joshua. We had kind of a mini-high school reunion every couple of weeks. Justin was a good little (the kids were 8-12 at the time) rider. He and my son both won class championships during that time and we both traveled to Ponca City, Oklahoma (among other places) in the summer of 1984 for a big National race. During that time Bev Burton (Ryan) owned a motorcycle supply store in Ramona and it was a surprise to walk in there one day and recognise her from Hilltop!

Gail, when you talk to Naleen please say hi for me and remember the fun times at the track! I recognised Justin in some of the memorial video shots (as well as Naleen of course). There was a shot late in the video with Naleen, Dewain and a man that looked like Justin (but as an adult now of course).

Bruce, you continue to jog the old memory! Sir Guy shirts, Finest Jones, Bill Gamble's. Finest's yellow '55 Vicky Ford, The Chevron station at 3rd and "E" St. was owned  (operated?) in the late 60's by Ronnie Kemp a CV street racer! Finest Jones used to live on Inkopah St. across from Susan Coble. Did I remember you said something about living on Inkopah? AJ Cole (remember him, he should be on your "tough guy" list yes!) used to live on Potrero Ct. next door to "Officer Bob", AJ was a bit older than us but had a sister in the class of '63(?).

Congratulations to all the new "Grand Parents"!

Cheers, Jim

Hi Jim:

Long time no see. Finis (no t) was one of my older brother's very good friends (and therefore sorta one of mine, like Dewain though I had another connection through Jay Hollister). I'm stuck on the yellow Ford. I just don't remember it.

Jay was the first friend I ever knew who died (I was in high school) and he worked with Finis at the clothing store at the time. Finis died later when he was being towed on a broke-down MC by Charles O'Hara (another of my brothers pals and so thereby mine) and it crashed up in Alpine. Charles died after Finis, I'm not sure how. Two others from the group left us early also, Mike Norland and Don Ledford (JoAnn's brother).

Michele and I frequently run to the corner of Neptune and Inkopah where there is a really exceptional view out to Point Loma (nice at sunset). Skip Leadingham (possibly now in Florida) lived right there on Inkopah and Barbara McGrath (and sister Patti) lived a bit further down. A real CV old-time Don Cox still lives in the neighborhood and we've stopped and talked to him before. He remembers every name I've thrown at him.

Do you remember the Nomads? Don disagreed with the list of members Jim Ames and I came up with.

AJ Cole kind of rings a bell, but I have to think on it. Don remembered Willie Stallings (Leon's older brother) and indicated that he came out on the unfavorable end of some fights with him (not exactly the way Don said it).

Michele lived in Ramona, but I don't think she was in the market for many  MC parts.

Reminds me I have to get my nephew to get fotos from his racing days.

Partial list of trumpet players: Banner, Butterfield, Wilson, Page, Romero, Short

John Romero, a couple years ahead of us, took up the bagpipes after the trumpet and used to march around Balboa Park playing.

Where was the HELICOPTER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD in 1968?

This may be one of the few photos of AJ Coles in existence. Extra credit, name the year and make of the car.

Wow! Ream Field in Imperial Beach! Okay, maybe a 1962 or 63 Plymouth. Remember the Black one that Emil Zumstein (spelling wrong for sure!) had in his Sr. year!

Everyone mis-pronounced or mis-spelled "Finis" name I think it was pronounced "Feen..is"! He also had a younger sister....and a show quality Yellow '55 Ford Victoria!

Inkopah was the "dividing street for those that went to moved to Castle Park when it opened. Judy Nelson, Carolyn Truby and others lived on Monserate south of Inkopah. Harry Gauld, Anita Rochmess, Susan Coble and I lived north of Inkopah but south of East "L" street so were given a choice of Hilltop or CP!

So sad about the Ledford family! After JoAnn and Donald I heard the youngest brother Ricky is also gone! He worked for the State Board of Education, was at a meeting in Carlsbad years ago (my wife was a teacher) and she talked with him.

I didn't know the Stallings very well, but Willy build a number of fast "sleeper" street racers back in the day! I drove Nicky Nicolson's 32 Sedan which had a big Pontiac engine in it once (Nicky had lost his license if I remember) man that was fun! Mike Hoxie also had a number of quick cars, but all these guys were a year or two older than us!
