Hi Gail. I talked to Dewain's kids, but I didn't know Naleen, so I didn't recognize her.

I think the memorial video should resonate with a lot of folks that might take a peek in on this forum. We all kind of grew up in a similar fashion.

Dewain was a paperboy, played the trumpet, played sports and was on the rowdy side which rings a bell with me.

His plans for college got derailed and he walked a bit on the wild side for a time, but judging by who and how many folks showed up at his ceremony he had a successful life. I'm wondering if anyone taped any of the eulogies. I'll have to check on that.

Anyone recognize folks in this photo (courtesy of CVHS site)? A lot of CVHS folks, but some HHS (bold) too.

Bernie Owen (1960), Gilbert Castro (CPHS, 1964?), Billy Ayub ('63), Skip Leadingham ('63), Von Tomkins, Gary Watts ('63).

Dennis Morinaka ('63), Carey Joe Hobson (we played baseball together)

Carter, Ayub, Tomkins, Morinaka & Hobson are known by me to be deceased. I don't know about any of the others.

Last time I saw Leadingham (I've heard from a neighbor on Inkopah that he moved to Florida) and Pete Brown would have been in the sixties.

Back in the days when I "was wondering what ever happened to" ...  one on my list recently turned up (as of 1985 anyway) when according to the L.A. Times, he ran somewhat afoul of the law.

Sometimes my mind gets wandering like the wild geese in the West. Today it stopped on Don Montel. I wonder what ever happened to Don Montel. We know about the other two standees, but I'm also wondering who is sitting. Did I ask this before?

Here is some news for my classmates; my oldest daughter Molly delivered twins by C-section yesterday, Piper (six pounds eleven ounces) and Grady (six pouinds ten ounces). They were very nearly Fourth of July babies. My wife's mother was born on the fourth and so was our daughter Emily. So the week of July Fourth will long be celebrated in our family. Grady is named for my uncle Graydon who is 98 years old. He jumped into Normandy with the 82nd Airpborne as a paratrooper-medic and made other big jumps during the European campaign including the Battle of the Bulge. I call him every year on D-Day to thank him for saving the world. He was our greatest sports fan attending every football game my brother Brian (Chula Vista) and I ever played in high school. When I was a little shaver, my father and uncle Grady took me to Brietbart football games so I was schooled on the rivalry between LA and San Diego. He has a beautiful mind and we enjoy talking to him about the old days, but he was always quiet about his war experiences. He is independent, living in a trailer in CV and still drinking a beer or two with his buddies at the American Legion hall. He's lived long, in part, because he takes a walk every day and has been walking vigorously for decades. Addie and I are blessed with family, new and old.

Hi Terry,

Congratulations on a double header, double the fun.

Our little Jasper turned 2 on July 2nd, and we were at a concert where the whole crowd sang Happy Birthday to her. She is a dancer, like her mother, River. Fireworks accompany her celebration, too, courtesy of the City of Aspen.

My Dad was in the Air Force and jumped out over China and walked over 100 miles to get back to his company. He was in the  Caterpillar Club and always  wore the little pin on his suit The group of men met often and I still  get newslettera from his squadron. It created an indelible bond.

He brought back Asian art and I still have a silk dress and a kimono he gave to my mother. Perhaps that planted a seed for my Asian/Deco/Modern motif in my home.

We are all so blessed with such great joy with these little ones.

Congrats Terry and belated birthday wishes to Jasper.

Is that the VFW at Third and 'I'? I won't go into the Fred Workman and Bruce VFW story, but I did offer to buy a somewhat older gent a beer there and he said "sure, I'll take two". I thought he said his name was Grayson.

Did I mention that Michele is expecting?

Getting back to those ubiquitous Sir Guy shirts. They were very expensive and available only in that men's store in National C:ity. I had one shirt. No one at Hilltop had more shirts than Bill Burger. I think he was on their payroll. I remember that Bill also had a beautiful Schwinn bicycle, and his sculpted hairdo was one of the more unique among our population of grease monkeys. I'm sure tho boys who spent their ninth grade year at HJHS remember the haircuts we received after graduating. The right of passage was facilitated by eager barbers such as Bob Gray who was very skilled at provding a humiliating hair style. Once our heads were shaved by the genuine barbers in Chula Vista (I used to go to John Hamels dad's place) we grew it back into Peter Gunn style haircuts and started wearing cordoroys, black low cut converse all-stars, and madras. A truly remarkable transition to young manhood.

Terry,

I remember the ninth grade hair cut well. I also got one from Bob.  I now wear the some hair cut because it is so easy to keep.  Funny how the world goes around.  Congrats on the grand daughters.  We have five grand children and I can't say how much we value them all.  We are blessed.

Sir Guys.

I think I had three of them. There were certainly a lot of them around, but it is very difficult to find photos of anyone actually wearing one. I had my paper route which is how I afforded them.

I started to do a detailed  post on clothes and shoes, perhaps I'll come back to it.

I do recall having a pair of alligator and suede shoes with huge horseshoe taps (courtesy of Ray's), which I purchased at Florsheim in downtown SD (rode the bus with, you guessed it, Burger).

The transition was then to white lowcuts (manufacturer unknown), Converse black low cuts (Chuck Taylor), then blue Topsiders. Jack Purcell (apparently also made by Converse) were popular in the surfing set.

But what did James Dean wear? I can't tell for sure, but it looks like white Purcells..

There is a lot of diabetes in my family, certainly more than anybody would want.

I'm sure some others may be in a similar situation. Here is some encouraging news on diabetes and stem cells.

All preliminary rodent research, but

“We can cure their diabetes right away — in less than 10 days,” Melton told NPR

However,

“If you don’t solve the autoimmune attack that killed those cells in the first place you are basically doing stupid mouse tricks as they say,” Solomon told the Washington Post..

Congratulations Terry and Addie!  Are these twins your first grandbabies?  They are real joys and blessings.  Bobby and I have nine, 5 girls and 4 boys.  Ranging in age from a sophomore in college at 19 1/2 years to a fifth grader at age 11.

Gas Station at Third & E, 1956. I thought the bank across the street was always there, but apparently not. Baldy, Knuckles (aka Merril Wood) and I used get cigarettes out of the machine there (later, we did not smoke even experimentally at age 10)..

Terrific news Addie and Terry. Glad everyone is doing well. Terry it sounds like your uncle and Mr. Rice were comrades in arms with the 82nd. Hope you've saved a pic somewhere of your shaved heads for your grandchildren. I remember how you all looked; glad the girls were spared. Another memory to smile about.

Not the one some of us are familiar with, but don't mess with Duane Eddy. No Sir Guy, no Topsiders, tuff hair.

IT'S OFFICIAL

**It's official: Latinos now outnumber whites in California**

No perjorative intent. You know, some of my best neighbors are Latinos.

Just an interesting fact.

I wonder what counts as Latino?  For example, how are Lyle Hitchcock, Gary Baldwin, Frank Fernandez, Ted Williams' kids, and Brain Maple (sorry Terry, there are resdency requirements) counted in the survey? First five that popped into my head..

Robert Eugene (Bob) Beckwith

Terry and Addie congratulations to you and rest of the family on new arrivals.  I have been wondering when the great day would arrive.  Good news and what fun to come!  Just stay off the BMX Park with the bicycles; Sage advice from rib center.

The Beckwith's were in Stanley over the forth and away from email; the reason for jet lag.  The grandkids and friends were in the 4th of July Parade.  We had motorcycles, bicycles, and horses represented.  Pretty darn funny. More people were in the parade than spectators, I think.  The front of the parade was back to the starting point before the last of the parade had started.  Bicyclers went around twice.  Red, White, and Blue.

And the Chinese students arrive today.  I learned while in Stanley that they were actually coming to the College of Idaho for an English emersion experience.  Friend and I are teaching the science part. Learning the names will be a process.   Now the scramble to be lessons ready starting Tuesday.  We are going to celebrate the National Clean Water Act by doing water chemistry and macro invertebrates on the Boise River.  The students will get their feet wet.  They will find out what is swimmable and fishable and not. We will also treat them to a day float on the Snake River with Dutch oven dinner that they get to cook.  They will learn how to go from Boise to Beijing via River and ocean.  Home just a float away.   Three week course won't last long.

Terry keep us in the loop on those Grandkids.  It's hard to contain the blessings and all the excitement.

Best to all.

Bob

Photos, Bob, Terry. We need photos.

Jimi Hendrix (Monterey International Pop Festival, 1967) to the contrary notwithstanding, this is not Bob Dylan's grandma. Just a local grandma from the varrio. Despite having lived in Hawaii, she just barely got the hang loose sign in.
