RE: The party. Glad that all got sorted out.

I have one party foto too, will find it later.

In the meantime, maybe some of us attended the Summer of Love in 1967. I was in Berkeley and went over a few times,  and lo and behold, ran into none other than Billy "The Conniver" Burger there. True.

Booker T knew where it was really at though, he went to Norway. ClASSIC PERFORMANCE with some mighty young looking fellas ( April 7, 1967, in Oslo).

Mike Swift.   I was thankful to read and see messages about Mike.  Pictures and messages are timely.

Quick refresher.  Mike and Turrie were married after we all graduated from Hilltop.  Mike and Turrie had two daughters, Kylie and Raimee.  Turrie passed (7-27-78) when the girls were 4 & 6.  And Mike passed on March 20th, 2005.

Kylie and Raimee still live in San Diego area with their families.  Kylie was with us last night with her daughter Karsyn (Karsyn is a Junior at the College of Idaho), here in Idaho for dinner.  Part of the dinner conversation was about how Kylie and her sister have very little of their father’s history.

I have copied photos from our web page and will pass them along.  If anyone else have photos or thought about Mike or Turrie I will pass that along as well.  After Turries’s death, Mike married Judy, about the time of our 20th class reunion, 1984.  When Mike passed Judy made of book about Turrie’s life.  Some of you may have been contacted to offer information.  The girls have that, but lacking information about Mike.  If anyone can help out, it will be appreciated beyond measure.

Thanks everyone for contributions and fond memories.

Best to all.

Bob

Good on you, Bob. I will see what I can find.

Continuing in a long string of "Mike" stories (RIP Mike Hollister, Mike O'Day)

Some of us  probably remember Mikey of cereal commerical fame.

If you remember San Ysidro as a basketball powerhouse, then you need to up your anti-dementia turmeric dosage.

There is however, a new kid in town and he is Mikey de 'Sidro, and he will dunk anything.

77 big ones the other day for Mikey Williams (his dad went to Sweetwater I believe)

Discovered last night (from a very relaible source?)  that there was actually a "Murder Mile" in Chula Vista. I was in Berkeley by then. The ones most of us were aware of are mentioned, but one was missed. It occurred right up the street from me on Halsey.

We should all strive to maintain balance in our lives, right? Don't want any falls sneakin' up on us.

Falls are common among older people. About one third of older people who live at home fall at least once a year, and about half of people who live in a nursing home fall more.

I have not fallen in a number of years. Interestingly, I have fallen more on sidewalks than when I was running in the street.

Did I mention that a car sideswiped me a while back. Driver just kept on keepng on (drinking, smoking, talking? whatever). I even had a witness.

"Kind ladies and kind gentlemen
Soon I will be gone
But let me just warn you all
Before I do pass on
Stay free from petty jealousies
Live by no man’s code
And hold your judgment for yourself
Lest you wind up on this road"

-Bob Dylan

And do not back down the stairs. I tried it and nearly fell, but didn't.

Speaking of basketball.

I am truly sad to report that Mr. Hambone "Art" Williams passed away at the age of 78 on Sept. 27, 2018. He died from a stroke (as did my mom) while living in National City (as did my whole family for a time).

I met him and played basketball with him at Pauley Pavillion after he had left the pro ranks. I got stuck guarding him and as I recall we played our match within a match to a draw. Mahdi Abdul-Rahman (nee Walt Hazzard) was one of his teammates and I did not recognize the other guy. I am pretty sure my squad walked off and I do not recall the score.

What I remember most is how strong he was. It was like pushing on a brick wall. He was a bit grunmpy too, having been waived outa the pros.

Nice man nonetheless. As is Sydney Wicks who is a great story teller and who I used to run the UCLA campus circuit with. I am about Coach Wooden's height (yeah, I met him too) and Sydney is somewhat taller, so we presented an interesting image running together I am sure.  *(Sydney to Wooden';s left).

Thanks Bruce, sure appreciate your extra efforts.  Efforts of all help getting information on Mike.  This process is just some of the value of lifetime friendships.  Good to know we can count on each other when and if a need arises.

Hi Bob,

Several of us were contacted a few years ago by Judy for information about Mike & Turrie, and I gave her all I had at that time.  But I will keep looking in case I overlooked something.  It is so nice that you are helping the daughters find out about their wonderful parents.  I thought Mike and Turrie two of the nicest people I ever knew.

Best always, Rosie

Loss of a Great Educator
Mike Swift

A memorial honoring Mr. Swift took place at his father's namesake, Swift Stadium, at the campus of CPHS on April 10, 2005. Mr. Swift passed away on March 20, 2005. He was 58 Years Young.

My memories of Mr. Swift were plenty and funny. He allowed me to read the daily bulletin at the start of 4th period...He was fun and a fair teacher.
I had Mr. Swift at CP Junior High as well...He will be missed.

Bruce thanks so much for the extra effort with Mike Swift.  His daughters loved what you found and so appreciated your efforts.

Also to Rosie-thanks for your comments too.  I never knew exactly whom Judy contacted for information about Turrie.  Just appreciate your thoughts and efforts as well.

Best to all.

My pleasure Bob. I have one more in the Pipeline.

Not this one, but this is good.

John Peck, featured here, a Coronado local, was the first one to ride the Pipeline, under what we will just say were unusual circumstanceds.

I emailed Officer Bob a few times.  He did not remember letting me off with a warning for riding my MC a little bit too aggressively, since I was a patrol boy, but I did.  RIP.

June 17, 1923  - Sept. 25, 2019

Robert L. Zeitelhack, age 96, of Tomahawk, WI, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019, at his home under the care of his family and Ascension at Home / Ministry HC Hospice. Bob was born in Tomahawk on June 17, 1923, to the late Leon and Ione (Scott) Zeitelhack. Bob enlisted in the Army and served from 1943-1945 where he was stationed in the Philippines and Okinawa. Bob came home to Tomahawk and became a police officer. Later, while at a local diner, he met his sweetheart, Orpha, and they married in 1947. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.

Bob and Orpha moved to sunny California in 1951 where Bob was a motorcycle officer for the Chula Vista Police Department. He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and visiting with the local law enforcement through the International Police Association. Bob was best known in Chula Vista as “Officer Bob” and worked closely with the safety patrol children. In 1976, Bob retired and moved back to the homestead in Tomahawk, where he was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Bob is survived by his Daughter, Donna (Bill) Gillespie, of San Diego, CA; 2 Grandchildren, Cody (Ben) Lee, and Jodi Gillespie; his Sister, Karla Perkins, of Chula Vista, CA; his Brothers, Jim (Carla) Scott, of Alpine, CA, and Darryl (Jean) Zeitelhack, of Tomahawk, and many other family members.

He was preceded in death by his Wife, Orpha Zeitelhack; his Son, Don Zeitelhack; and his Stepfather, Don Scott.

I remember Officer Bob would hide behind a bush along I St. on his motorcycle and wait for speeders as school let out.  One day we teased him as we walked by and said, " That's pretty sneaky, hiding behind a bush."  He replied, "I'm dealing with sneaky people."   RIP Officer Bob.

For all you Rosebankers and Rosebankettes, I just found out that Bill Rector passed away in May of 2018.

I used to play b-ball with Bill and go cruising. One very memorable trip to the drags at Hourglass Field.

I had heard that he became a card dealter in Las Vegas but could never confirm it.

Also,

Denny Woods passed away May 28, 2019.

I did not hang out with him.

Denny is the answer to a trivia question about Frank Fernandez: whose injury led coach Tomlinson to turn to an untested  sophomore quarterback to start the 1961 football season? Answer: Denny Woods, senior quarterback, who broke his arm before the season started and could not play. In the summer before our sophomore year, Frank and I used to walk up the street to Hilltop's playing field to play pick up football with a huge number of upper classmen. As sophomores invited to try out for the varsity we were introduced to the toughest young men on the Hilltop roster. I believe Denny was injured in one of these rough, unsupervised gatherings. I spent two weeks on the varsity, broke my finger, and eventually settled on the junior varsity as their quarterback. Frank replaced Woods as varsity quarterback and he did quite well. I remember that seniors like Tank Reynolds used to sit with Frank on the senior lawn. He beckoned me over a few times, but I never felt comfortable violating the unwritten rule about who could sit there. Frank was good enough that he was completely accepted by his older team mates. The next year, Frank as inelegible and I competed with Joe Stetser for the job. Joe won out and went on the play college football for Chico State. He was among the nation's best small college passers in the late 1960's. It was a joy to play with so many outstanding young men at a time when football was a simpler, safer game.

So interesting, Terry. We lived and circulated in different universes during those years (except when our paths crossed in journalism class). Like Bruce's many tales and adventures, I had no idea about the experiences of my classmates. Thank you for sharing. - kay
