George:

I just want to say how much I enjoyed visiting you and Pam in your home years ago, your amazing  hospitality, and the genuine kindness that you both emit.  Thank you for such a  nice memory.  I'm certain your tours are wonderful.

I drove by that spectacular historical home on the way to my Aunt Patty and Uncle Dick's home at 640 Del Mar Avenue,a Craftsman home they had for 60 years.   Aunt Patty's Dad, Grandpa Fender (a relative of the Fender guitar creator) had one of the first gas stations in Chula Vista.  I look forward to a tour with you, George.

Shayne,

The house at 640 Del Mar is on my walking tour.  It was once owned by Warner Edmonds, who co-founded the People's State Bank with Greg Rogers.  Warner lived there with his wife, Martha.  Her father, Martin L. Ward, was a State Senator in the early 1900s.

Next time I do the tour, I will mention Fender and connection with the guitars. Thanks for that information.

Do you still have relatives living in the house?

Thanks for the foto George.  Aunt Patty sold the home when Uncle Dick died and she moved to Oregon to live with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren..  I went to CV for that week to help her and the family sell her furniture and load up the trailer. We had so many family celebraions there. After they left, I stayed the last night alone  reminiscing.  I went to Oregon several years ago to celebrate her 90th Birthday.

The Silicon Valley Economy Is Here. And It’s a Nightmare.

Low pay, soaring rents, and cities littered with e-scooters. Welcome to the future.

But the state’s affluence is spread unevenly, resulting in an increasingly bifurcated economy that privileges the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. This is particularly apparent in cities like San Francisco and San Diego, where the gig economy is most prevalent. Costs of living there are higher than elsewhere in the country, exacerbated by a housing market that, thanks to an influx of cash from the tech sector, has become prohibitively expensive for many people (and has also helped drive a spike in homelessness).

Then again, re the future, maybe not:

One Of The Most Common Ingredients In The Western Diet Has Been Found To Alter Genes In The Brain

Writing in the journal Endocrinology, the study authors explain that soybean oil was found to modify the expression of around 100 different genes in the hypothalamus, affecting processes such as metabolism, neurological disease, and inflammation.

Among the altered genes were some that are associated with schizophrenia, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease, although by far the most affected was a gene that codes for the production of a hormone called oxytocin.

Oxytocin is sometimes referred to as the “love hormone” as it promotes social bonding and feelings of euphoria, and disruptions to its functioning have been linked to depression and autism. However, it also plays a key role in regulating body weight and glucose metabolism, and mice fed on soybean oil were therefore found to suffer from glucose intolerance, while those fed on coconut oil had no such problems.

"Of Mice and Men" - you be the judge.

Madeline Bazzel, Nancy Kuebler, Linda Tatreau, Joy Miller, Lynn Iwashita, Kathy Anderson, Tika Morgan and I admit I cheated on Tika Morgan...I recognized her face but couldn't remember her name. I moved to Chula Vista after Brownies but I joined this group as a Girl Scout. Some of the others look familiar to me but no names come to mind. And where ever did you find this photo? I think the girl in the center seated is the daughter of the lady who became the Girl Scout leader, Mrs. Harris. This photo must have been taken in 1955? sixty five years ago.

BROWNIES - MAY, 1956

Which one is Tika? She lived on I Street between First and Second, but I do not recognize her.

The foto was in a folder labelled "old".The foto is remarkably clear so I am wondering how I got it. I am quite sure I was looking for Evelyn Saks, who though she never knew it, was my first "crush" in life.

Here are the names associated with the foto in the original source, in no particular order.

18 names, 15 girls in the foto

 Cathy Anderson
 Christine Gardner
 Evelyn Saks
 Janis James
 Jo Ellen White
 Joy Miller
 Judith Schnorr
 Kathy Harris
 Kathy Swallow
 Linda Tatreau
 Lynn Iwashita
 Madeline Bazzel
 Martha Smith
 Nancy Kuebler
 Penny Jenson
 Sandra Harris
 Susan Michael
 Tika Morgan

I got Madeline, Nancy (leftmost top two) and Lynn (leftmost bottom)

Joe Ellen and Evelyn (second from right top, rightmost bottom)

With some cleanup of th OCR rendering:

FASHION SHOW Brownie Troop 840 honored their mothers with a Mother's Day luncheon and fashion show on Saturday at the home of Mrs. Paul White. Fashions were presented by Leader Department Store with Mrs. Brady as commentator. Models were Christine Gardner, Lynn Iwashita, Judith Schnorr, Nancy Kuebler, Jo Ellen White, Susan Michael, Kathy Harris, and guest model Lynn Burns from Intermedite Troop 3593 who modeled a complete Intermediate Girl Scout uniform as the "best dressed girl ot 1957". . Luncheon -was prepared by Penny Jenson, Madeline Bazzel, Janls James, Martha Smith, Kathy Swallow, Joy Miller, Tika Morgan, and Evelyn Saks. Patio decorations and arrangements were made by Sandra Harris, Linda Tatreau, and Cathy Anderson. Each girl served her mother a luncheon tray and presented hr with a corsage

Tika is the third girl from right seated on the floor. This is an outstanding find. I can't tell which is Judy Schnorr. I've always thought she looked the same like her graduation photo even in 5-6th grades, their family live behind us and I cannot tell which one is Judy. She must be standing next to JoEllen? And I should know Kathy Swallow, she was a pal of mine at Hilltop Drive Elementary. I got in trouble once because I went home with her for lunch without permission from my parents and I was called to the office to have a talk with Mrs. McCann. When I think about it now I can't imagine anyone being terrified of a talk with Mrs. McCann but I was. I would guess that's Kathy S next to Nancy Kuebler.

THX Karen. Once you pointed Tika out, I recalled her too.

Frank Fernandez and I had the same lecture from Mrs. McCann, though we went to the Foodarama for candy. I remember walking back through the then abandoned Hilltop Circle project (set for demolition) and breaking some windows with our rock throwing skiil (?).

More 1956

Not Brownies

We met in Hilltop Circle. One of the two, like Frank, went on to become a QB (CVHS). Like Frank the mystery man and I got into some minor (?) mischief.

I found this in my folks photo albums.  This would be my first birthday party after I moved to Rosebank School and started fourth grade.  I don't have any names, but I recognize a few people.  I think that is me standing up in the center back.  The guy on my right is a neighbor from my old neighborhood, and his sister is the third girl on the right, Bobby & Connie Jo Campbell.  The girl front & center looks like my youngest sister.  The rest of you would my Rosebank classmates.  Identify yourselves.

Addendum:   The girl front & center can't be my youngest sister, as she would have been 1 1/2 years old.  Could be my middle sister at 5 years old.

Just a wild guess from a Hilltop Drive Elementary student, Gail Dillon left and next to her Kay Ochi.

I like your guess Karen and I will refrain from what would have been a very bad joke.

As long was we are on scouting

I could only name one without cheating.

Hint: From down in the area where I live now. I met him at CPJHS in 1959..

Meniscal repair and regeneration: Current strategies and future perspectives

Conclusion:

With recent advancements in surgical techniques, biomaterials and cell-based technologies in tissue engineering, we may have new therapeutic options on the horizon for addressing meniscal injuries in clinical practice. On the other hand, there are still several potential problems to be solved, considering complete meniscus regeneration remains challenging for managing meniscal deficiencies with currently available techniques. First, the selection and design of biomaterials with sufficient mechanical strength and long-term durability for the optimal repair and remodeling of menisci have not been fully elucidated. Additionally, such biomaterials are essential to also prevent the progression of cartilage degeneration in a long-term. Due to the lack of evidences regarding these issues, further studies (e.g. high quality comparative studies) will be needed and should be conducted in a methodologically rigorous fashion. Secondly, current approaches indicate that meniscal function could not be fully restored effectively, based on observing meniscal extrusion and the progression of joint space narrowing after biomaterial implantation in many cases.,, It is likely that newly developed technologies such as 3D printing may be a key technology to assist in solving several of these problems, getting closer to the native meniscus regarding anatomical and biomechanical aspects. Also, surgical techniques will need to be refined, especially in the prevention of meniscal extrusion and the restoration of meniscal functions. Furthermore, surgeons should consider the cost-effectiveness to apply these new techniques into clinical practice. A last consideration is that an ideal cell-seeded, size-matching meniscal implant mimicking the native meniscus may not be absolutely needed to satisfy the needs of all patients (i.e. precision medicine). Therefore, further studies (e.g. cellular versus acellular scaffolds) are needed to determine whether the increased intervention costs can be balanced with the observable advantages of these new technologies (cost/benefit analysis). However, as the technologies become perfected and implemented, the costs will likely come down, making the optimal choices for individual patients more feasible.

Karen and Rosie, you're both right about John's birthday party. That's Kay and I on the left (to this day I hate it when someone gets scissors too close to my bangs) and Marcia sitting across from us. Is that Mike Shadoan standing in the back?

John, did you get the message I sent you about some mutual friends we might have shared in Visalia?

Mike Swift's name is written on the side of the photo. Could that be Mike Swift between John and the other Mike? Thanks, John, for sharing this photo - it's strange to see my 4th grade self. And, thanks, for the party!

Hi Gail, I am so glad you thought of Mike Shadoan's name.  I knew I recognized him but couldn't come up with the name.

It's a great picture, John.  I walk by your old house quite frequently, the house my dad built.  Fond memories.
