Speaking of our old pal Skeezix, his killer was sentenced to 16 years to life a while back. I lost the exact date.

And Chet Devore? I delivered him his morning newspaper for a number of years, keeping him well-informed on sports and life in general. Did I get even an honorable mention in the stadium naming?

(not far from where you live now Karen).

Mr

This guy? Just full of hot air or a glass blower down in TJ. Robbie Bartlett and I went down and watched him or one of his associates in action.

George, if you are still listening in, it looks like that development at Third & K Street has terminated abrupty.

What do you hear?  (mitä kuuluu in Finnish).

I guess some things are just made not to last, even if "well-conceived".

I say, bring back the packing house and restore all house contents to their proper order.

So, who kicked out my left lateral incisor?  I know we were somewhere in the middle of practice.  I thought I was tackling quarterback Joe Crittenden??!!! Or was it Joe Stetser???  I made the tackle, but didn’t tie the legs tight enough.  The runner’s leg was still running when we hit the ground, he extended a bent leg. The cleated foot pushed right through the mouth guard and took out the left incisor.  Where the jagged tooth part went remains a mystery even today.

With a piece of the nerve hanging out it didn’t seem to hurt much.  What did hurt was my Mother’s look and comment to follow.  She just looked at the jagged stub and said, “YOU ARE GOING TO PAY FOR THAT.”!!!  Not a note of sympathy.  I guess the Nebraska native just didn’t have a tolerance for wasting time, football might have been one of those time wasters in her view.

The good news, our dentist was Doctor Speedy Nutz.  Our classmate Judy’s dad.  His sense of humor matched his name.  He pulled the root out, put a pin in, capped it off and all is till in place.  Who was the quarterback? The runner???

Dr. Speedy was a great dentist. He pulled a broken tooth of mine in our Sr. year and installed a permanent bridge. When I was in the Army I went to my dentist appt. in Zweibrucken Germany. The Army dentist looked at my teeth and called all of the other dentists over to the chair. After staring into my mouth one of them asked "where are you from Sgt.". They couldn't relate to Chula Vista, but when I said So. Cali, they all nodded in amazement  at the high quality of work.

I think Dr. Nutz parents had the great sense of humor as Speedy's brother Harry was also a dentist (in Escondido I believe)!

Bruce,

I don't know the status of the 3rd and K project.  I will try and find out.

Here, again, is the 1940 aerial with streets marked.  As I had mentioned before, my family moved to 785 Del Mar in 1958.  The lemon grove was removed in about 1948.  The houses were built 1949 to 1950.

Jim:

My dentist when I was at Irivne had similar skills. When I went to my new guy in La Cresecenta, he commented on the quality of the. that was now 30 years old. "They usually do not last this long".

On the local Basketball front, San Diego State is still unbeaten, but the big news is still Mikey Williams de Sidro.

Here he is in Seventh grade.

Bob, I may have been the quarterback who kicked your tooth out, but Crittendon played a little quarterback until Sisk converted him to play guard. He was a tough guy who entered the game with John Vredenburg as our little guard combo when Bandelin and Harse needed a break. I can attest that they were just as effective as the big guys in opening holes for Joe Ruenzel and me. If it was my foot that took out your tooth consider it payback for jumping on me in practice with your facemask raking my spine; nasty bruise that sticks in my memory even today. I know you didn't mean it but you were a ruthless tackler. Don't forget, readers, Bob Beckwith was our starting middle linebacker and Most Inspirational Player in 1963/64. And Kay, I seem to recall you were on the dance team;  how could you miss all this inside football stuff? I loved talking to you in journalism class except when you were scolding me for being a slacker when it was paste-up day. You were one of Hilltop's superstars and i appreciated all you did to make our school a better place. Jim, surely you didn't tell those military people you were from "Cali". We never called it "Cali" in those days; that was like calling San Francisco "Frisco" which was forbidden by true denizens of "The City". How times and jargon change.

smiley Terry, Nope it was always CALIFORNIA back in the day! Got started using Cali when all my East Coast neices and nephews kept saying "it's my Uncle Jim from Cali"!

I was at a hockey game (love Hockey!) a few years ago and there was a bunch of kids (okay, young adults) sitting in the row behind us. They were singing some song about La Bella something. I finally turned  and asked them if it was about La Bella Pizza in CHULA VISTA. They said yes, and that they all worked there. I told them I was from CHULA VISTA and had been going to La Bell since the late 50's. They said "you're a CHULLY (sp)? That kind of stuck too! Probably a "no,no" Here! wink

PS: Our PUGS are still doing well at 15 and 16 yrs old!

Jim you are right.  The Nutz’s parents had to have an incredible sense of humor.  I have no idea how Judy made it through it all.  When I saw Judy at our Class reunion I raved praised about her Dad’s work.  Might even showed her my tooth??? So darn funny now.  We always rumored that Speedy had a brother, Harry, but no way would a parent do that to a boy!!!!!!  What a great Dentist.  Haven’t had a bit of trouble with the tooth.  Spent first nine years living in Fruitland, Id.  The water supply was rich in Fluoride.  The teeth seem pretty good except one kicked out.

Terry if it was you who booted out my precious tooth, no wonder I didn’t get you wrapped up.

I can’t remember much joy in having to try and bring you to a stop.  And thanks for reminder about Joe being moved to guard position.  I can always remember how fast John was.  Man could he move.  Still hoping our paths cross again.

Kay I to add thanks for all of your hard work and leadership.  When I get back to San Diego be fun to catch.

To Bruce: You were talking about balance.  Been working on that too.  This summer, haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but thinking of hiking the Na Pali trail in Hawaii.  If not familiar, google it up.  Balance is not a luxury, but a requirement of the 11-mile trail.

There are two other hikes too to make a trilogy.  Fun to come.

BOB: I will check that out. I am still shooting for the Imogene Pass run in Southwest Colorado. It is hard to get into and I may have to do it solo or as a bandit.

BTW, I am discovering that running performance declines in "old age" not only because of decreasing V02-Max, but also because weakness occurs in ones legs, ankles etc.  Doing the balancing exercise I do helps strengthen all the soft tissue down to the feet.

Basketball (history this time). The last time I saw this guy was not on a basketball court, but at The Long Bar in TJ.

Extra credit if you can name him and his "four corner" (sorry Dean Smith I cound not resist) associates.

JIM: I can't remember if I put this one up before or not. It looks like he was a winner.

TERRY:

If you can't remmber to play nice with the other kids, we may have to pair you up with the guy who just moved in across the street, an ex MMA competitor. Big and strong. I will try to get a foto,.

I took typing in ninth grade (it was rough after lunch, typing and PE) and I could never get past looking at the keys. Once I became a hi-tech computer guru I find that I can type almost as well as Houdini could pick those locks or Stevie could rock out on his keyboard. OK I still make mistakes, but I do not look at the keys anymore.

This is not me and no I did not play basketball with him. HOWEVER, I did play basketball with a physicist named Wally who built some equipment for him. Like Babs Streisand, Stevie was slow to pay.

Just sayin'

Karen Etsuko Tachiki (Savel)

I think the Devore family home on K Street remains occupied by a family member like maybe a grandchild or great grandchild of the elder Devores.

And I'm not sure but my husband and I in our younger days did some hiking in Colorado and may have done that hike you are referring to Bruce, to Imogene Pass. Would have to look around here for notes of hiking trips but I remember hiking up an old dirt road, going past an old mine to a high elevation and just doing the road back to Telluride not going over to Ouray. And I remember how sore we were and really enjoyed the jacuzzi at the hotel after we got back to Telluride. And as I recall we were sore for some days after. Another hike we did was in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison which is so steep in some parts there are huge chains strung along the trail to hang on to as you descend to the I think Gunnison River at the bottom. Getting down was just as difficult as getting up though I think going back up to the rim was easier than going down. There are also interesting hikes in the Ute Mountain Reservation in southwestern Colorado but you have to have a Ute guide if you want to hike there. A lot of Anasazi ruins there that are very interesting. Hope you are able to go Bruce or any others who still hike. Hiking for us is limited now by age and a new hip for Steve. We cannot do those challenging hikes any more but so glad we did them when we could. Also for anyone who has appreciation for the Grand Canyon we have backpacked into the canyon 6 times and did some exploring around in the bottom. We have not rafted on the river but there really is plenty of exploring to be done on foot at the bottom of the canyon. OK enough travelogue for today.

Karen:

It sounds like you did an out and back on the second part of the course. Hard work any way you go due to the elevation.

There were a lot of Finnish miners in the Telluride area and it amazes me what kinds of structures they lived in. You can still see remains.

I am lucky fitness_wise. I have torn menisces in both knees but they never seem to hurt. Fingers crossed.

Telluride reminds me of Berkeley back in the sixties (only a lot wealthier).

I will have to check out the Black Canyon!

Bruce,

I think I posted the pic of Bob Hargrove in his kart before, not sure. The small car (near Bob's helmet) is heading south on US 395 at (what is now) Clairemont Mesa Blvd. We used to race in the the Convair Astronautics parking lot (pic is about 1958). My how things have changed. Bob is also in the pic you posted from the Long Bar. The girls in that pic all looked familiar, must have been Upper Class Women!

Forced marches in Army training put me off hiking as a hobby (ha, ha) but I did a hike in Philmont Colo when my older son was in scouts. Hiking up the "tooth of time" with a 75lb pack was a real experience (short but staircase steep). The Air Force pilots (Peterson AFB?) would use the peak as a turn pilon. You would look right into the cockpits as they made the turn.

Jim

Apple investor Warren Buffett finally upgrades from a flip phone to an iPhone

Buffett tells CNBC that he did not purchase an iPhone, but rather was gifted “several of them” by numerous people, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, who has been trying to get Buffett to switch to an Apple-made device for at least a few years. Cook even told Bloomberg TV in 2018 that he would personally fly out to Omaha and perform tech support for Buffett, should he ever need it.

May be why he is so wealthy? He does not buy stuff.

Hey Bob:  Na Pali trail looks great.

but

Possibly the most exclusive beach in the world—complete with your own private waterfall—Kalalau Beach is accessible only by an 11-mile hike along the Na Pali Coast Trail. While the trail is open to the public, most visitors only ever hike the first two miles to Hanakapi’ai Beach. Continuing beyond this point requires a permit which you must purchase in advance, and permits can be difficult to obtain.

For those interested, a nice travelogue hewre.

The shadow knows.

I wrestled Mike Hollister in the back of this one. We both fought dirty and it came out a draw. Come to think of it Bob wrestled too (elsewhere).

Bruce: That Na Pali coast trail is some kind of trail.  I’ve been on quite a few that are steep, and narrow, nothing like Na Pali trail-nothing!!!  Makes me pucker just to think about it.  That secluded beach I want to see.  I also want to get a boat to pick us up so we have to walk the trail only once.  Finding someone on Kauai with a boat that will do that has become the challenge.

Will keep you posted.  I don’t watch the videos, I just want to go.

Bob

I forgot to add: Karen you are way ahead of me in hiking down into Colorado in Grand Canyon.  Once was all I got with a College of Idaho group.  I have also rowed it once.  It was a 21 day event.  The white water is petty darn impressive. Good news, no flips, no rips. The day and side hikes, perhaps more so.  Silver Gotto and many others come to mind.

The hikes you describe get a person's attention.  I might need more than a hot tub!!!!

I "stumbled" across Mt. Huashan trail a couple years ago. Interestingly, the only person in my family to visit China is my mom and she did not like heights. :)

My long time favorite site got shut down (purportedly over copyright issues).

One thread had 22,000 posts - "What song are you listening to right now"

The other had 20,000 -  "What Is Mind"?

So here are some lyrics for our minds to ponder

Warren Zevon
Indifference of Heaven

Time marches on
Time stands still
Time on my hands
Time to kill
Blood on my hands
And my hands in the till
Down at the seven-eleven
Gentle rain
Falls on me
All life folds back
Into the sea
We contemplate eternity
Beneath the vast indifference of heaven
The past seems realer than the present to me now
I've got memories to last me
When the sky is gray
The way it is today
I remember the times when I was happy
Same old sun
Same old moon
It's the same old story
Same old tune
They all say
Someday soon
My sins will all be forgiven
