Just found my way into the forum to respond to Bruce's query. My brother Brian is a 1958 graduate of Chula Vista High School. He received a Ph.D. in Physics from UC San Diego. He is still on the faculty there and lives in Del Mar. He attends CVHS reunions regularly. Bruce mentioned Hank Sieradzki (now Stevens). He received his Ph.D. in Classics from Bryn Mawr and spent his entire career teaching Latin and Greek at a private high school in Rhode Island. I receive a Christmas card from him each year and we did manage to see each other when I was in New York on my way to Sweden in 1971. I'm hoping he and his wife Bobbie will visit us on Amelia Island in the near future.

For some reason I seem to have missed notification of several posts and had been wondering what had happened to Mr. Post himself..  Maybe the missing messages had to do with the transition to the new no-cost version of this website?

Many many years ago, 48 as a matter of fact I worked at Palomar School Camp as a staff person and met my husband there and also many of my life long friends. And I just read the post of Bruce and brought back memories of that experience. The photo of the weir that is located near the beginning of Pauma Creek was a destination for hike groups at the school camp. Of course we could make up a lot of stores about the structure and the children were happy to hear them all. There evidently was a man whose name was Asher, had a cabin somewhere in that area and was kind of hermit. And I think there were many stories told about him.

And it is possible to hike down Pauma Creek to Pauma Valley which I did once in my crazy younger days. It is downhill but some parts require climbing up huge boulders to get around steep drop offs. For anyone interested in an adventure, it's a hard hike and when you arrive at the bottom you are on the Pauma Indian reservation and if you do not have their permission to be there they might escort you off with their weapons drawn. My husband has done the hike a number of times and had that experience on one of his ventures. It is also possible to climb out of the creek bed before the Indian reservation to avoid negative encounters.

That job was a physically challenging one, but a lot of fun. My sixth grade camp experience was a good one even though I was afraid to away from home for the first time in my life. Being able to go back and work in that program was a great life experience. Sad that Palomar School Camp has closed and sad many children will miss that experience.

Hmmm. I thought maybe the conversion was the culprit but why aren't there more of our classmates with my problem? With this problem, I can't be a regular, but I'll break into the system when I can.

Does anyone remember building balsa  wood  CO2 powered race cars.

I recall them from the Boys Club on I Street near Fourth or Fifth.

Dave Olmstedt and I used to hang out there and then go up and give Mr. Falbe a hard time about how we could beat his T-Bird with a Boys Club dragster.

Why the sudden appearance here? I think Karen T. was missing me, but was too shy to say. Hi Karen, I miss you too.

Anyway I found one of the tubes on the ground yesterday, though this isn't it, this is what they look like.

They've come a long way, baby.

You can't always get what you want, but this isn't the soundtrack I would have chosen.

Speaking of John Link (his mom and mine were pretty good friends at one time).

Roger Bannister, the first sub-four minute miler, passed away on March 3, at age 88.

A four minute mile was quite an accomplishment then and still is today. More people have climbed Mt Everest (approx 4000) than have run a four minute mile (approx 1100). Of that 1100 about 500 were/are US milers.

Whilst at USC, John ran a 4.00.02 mile and like Bannister went on to become a doctor.  He was not however, knighted like Roger, but remains, I believe, a Lancer and I will not hold it against him that he went to USC rather than UCLA or UCSD.

Not to slight another famous CV runner, Tim Danielson, who turned in a sub-four mile in 1966, becoming the second high-schooler to have performed the magical feet [sic].

John is apparently a bit camera-shy, but here he is sporting that famous bow-tie.

Both Michele's and my mom encountered breast cancer. The first thing I did when my mom was diagnosed was to read John's book

Here's a link to John's site which discusses Breast Cancer Incidence.

Just in case anyone is feeling ambitious, age group mile records  (men)

60 - 4.51.8

65 - 4:56.4

70 - 5:19.7

75 - 5:41.8

And don't forget,  only one sub 3-hour marathon for those over 70.

There was an ugly rumour that one of the CV  Nomads had been stolen and ended up in San Francisco Bay, which proved to be untrue.

However, a theft from one of the Nomad owners that did indeed have this very unfortunate result did occur. Car was a 1953 Chevy.

So at long last, we have the Nomads.

Here are The Kingsmen in my original hometown. Thanks to Steven Marak.

Right about the time a number of us (no names please - well OK, Sue Zimdars [Point Loma] and I don't mind) were getting busted at the Youth Fun Nest listening to Louie Louie, The Kingsmen were actually playing in National City.

But wait there's more

Don't miss this - excellent documentary on Elvis.  Esp his early year and the influences that shaped his style - which can never to be replicated. A tragic end.  But we were fortunate to partake of that time in recent history.  God bless & best wises to all!  XOXO Corinne

PS : I have a vague recollection of dancing to "Jailhouse Rock"  in the cafeteria at HJHS in 9th grade - with the PE  teacher. And then, an earlier  memory of dancing to "All Shook Up" with Jim Stobaugh at a party at his house - maybe 5th grade.

Desiree Linden (HHS/2001) won the 2018 Boston Marathon.

Not a Link class miler, but she did do a sub 5 minute mile as a freshman.

How is she as a dancer? Not as famous as Gary Emerson and Richard Wehmeyer and Jill Maloney.

Not as popular as Elvis, but a fine showman nonetheless as well as a part-time politician in Texas, Kinky Friedman* will be playing at the Belly Up Tavern tonight.

I cannot go, but may be able to catch him at McCabes Guitar Shop on Saturday. Loves dogs and America too.

*Richard Samet "Kinky" Friedman is an American singer, songwriter, novelist, humorist, politician, and former columnist for Texas Monthly who styles himself in the mold of popular American satirists Will Rogers and Mark Twain.  He claims that Danny Schweers (HHS/1964) was one of his strongest influences when Schweers was publishing his underground newspaper in Texas

Thought you might be interested in how Hilltop got a Women's Track team - This is a copy of a post from my younger sister Laura (Bogart) Schwartz - this took place 1974-75 - got the team in 1976

Laura Schwartz The story of girls cross country and track at Hilltop High school.

I had been wanting to go out for cross and track since junior high school but girls weren’t allowed to participate. In my junior year of hs I decided to go out for cross since Title I
V was passed. I ran the time trial and came in right behind my buddy Mike Lopez and squeezed into a varsity spot, or so I thought. But the Coach wasn’t pleased and told me I could only run if I beat Bonita Vista’s AAU Mile champ (girl) at the next xc race, which I did. That Monday I found myself on the cut list 😰. I complained to the coach, my counselor, and the principal to no avail.

That spring myself & Laine Valinsky went out for the boys track team. We were told that Laine had to run a 60.0 440 and I had to run a sub 5:00 Mile. We worked out with determination. On trial day Laine ran just sub 60.00 and I ran 4:58 in the Mile, but again the same coach refused to race us. We again complain with no results.

That next fall we took our complaints and lawyers card to the principal to “encourage” him to comply with Title IV. He called the superintendent and had a hilarious conversation (in retrospect).

We were instructed to get girls names who wanted to do track and find a coach. There was quite a number of girls who signed up & came out. Mr. Fetter volunteered to be the girls coach (yeah Mr. Fetter!!!).

There were a number of adults who actively sought to make it hard on us to get this going. I won’t name anyone, the past is gone. But it certainly taught me a lot of good life lessons.

And Hilltop has got a Boston Marathon champ out of it.

Yay for Des! Unbeknownst to us, Des ran in the 2014 Boston Marathon which counted another former Lancer in its many thousands. My husband, Mike (Lancer class of "63) and son, Brian (Rochester High School class of 1987). Had I known, (I was a faithful spectator) I would have cheered for Des as loudly as I cheered for Meb, Mike, and Brian. I believe Des trains with the Hanson Group headquartered in Rochester, MIchigan. Rochester is a lovely little town northeast of Detroit. Because, as everyone knows, no one is really from Detroit, it's just an identifier on the map.

Since I was on the page and his name has come up recently, as not only a fine athlete, but a dancer as well, heeere's Jim. His dad was a bit of a character also, but where exactly did they live before they moved up near my house on Monterey?

Tell me about it Treasa (i.e. Michigan). My mom came from Ironwood, no way Detriot[sic]. My parents got married in Bloomfield Hills. My dad went to the University of Detroit (shout out to Dick Vitale) and couldn't wait to get outa there.

Hence the big move to Everett Washington.

OK, one more. He  lived a troubled life (in CV and other places), but hopefully now is resting peacefully. I didn't know him too well, but I did meet him.

Hint: He wasn't one of the Nomads:

Bruce - not sure you read my post correctly - that info was from my SISTER. She graduated from HHS in 76... that would have made me 11 when she was born 😂
