GREG ROGERS HOUSE ARTICLE

The San Diego Union-Tribune ran an article today (April 13, 2017) on the Greg Rogers House.

Part of the article was about classmate Bev (Burton) Ryan's experiences with the house when her grandparents owned it. There is a picture of her in the house--taken last week.

Recall that Bev mentioned her grandparents owning the home in post 1882 about page 76.

The article is on-line at: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/south-county/sd-se-rogers-home-0413-story.html  It includes a video of the house which shows Bev touring the house.

Let me know if you would like a pdf of the full newspaper article.

Here is part of what appeared:

HISTORIC HOME TOUR

If anyone is interested, I can give you a walking tour of the historic neighborhood of Del Mar and 2nd Avenues between I and J.  I recently gave the tour to some classmates.

So let me know if there is interest. It takes about 1/2 hour and is 3/4 mile. I may also be able to arrange a tour of the Greg Rogers House.

This part of Del Mar is a "mini" history of Chula Vista in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The street has the historic homes of the first Mayor of CV; two other Mayors; early medical doctors (including Karl Kellogg); the home of the Peters family (Peters Feed) and the home of a NY Giants catcher.

The street has many of the architecture styles of this era including Craftsman, Victorian, Spanish Revival and Cape Cod.

Because all homes are privately owned, my tour does not include visits inside except perhaps the Greg Rogers house.

The article in my last post mentioned the Greg Rogers house being designated as the 1st historical site in Chula Vista.  Here is an article from the Chula Vista Star News from 1977:

Well, C:

Glad that you spoke up.

Like Leo said one time, "i've been worried about you ...  since you've been gone".

Thanks for that tour of the "front" house.

Speaking of tours, I was touring some old houses and the Kimball Park in my (and Rosie's) home town of National City

when I was pulled over by an unusual LEO.

We know where Chub's Club went, but where did Zontek's move to? Corinne and I did not go there together, but we went somewhere close by.

Guesses at names, location?

I can't figure out who the short-haired guy behind Dennis is.

OK full photo.

Note - "don't write on the walls". The Long Bar, late sixties, most likely. My brother preferred the Hotel Nelson, but my crew were Long Bar (and Hussongs) diehards, though nobody actually died thankfully

On the left is AJ and 3 women who I recognize but cannot name. In back, with cig, is I believe Brian Tucker and gilrfriend/wife?  With his hand in his pocket is my brother Woodie and the guy with the glasses is stumping me.

If anyone can id the large beer bottle on the table then that person has spent way too much time in TJ.

I can.

On the Tour de Force front, don't forget the Marston House in Balboa Park. Michele and I were there one day and just missed Annie (class O'65)  by about an hour.

And yes, that is Michele appearing below in period costume. Gal getz around, no?

In 1966, I used to lift weights at the CV Rec Center's upstairs gym with George Marston. He was a very nice guy and totally dedicated to squats. That was his specialty but he helped me build up to a 300 pound bench press just before I returned to Pacific for the 1967 baseball season. In the space devoted to lifting, there were very few machines, just barbells. I believe George was a member of the local Marston family. Anybody remember him?

We are just losing too many good guys.  It was devastating to hear about Steve Smith.  We had a long talk at the 50th reunion, and I was so impressed with the good life he lived and how kind and giving he was.  I was sorry to miss his memorial, but I am glad some of you were there to represent us.

Madeline Bazzel Hooper just called me and told me of another -- Jerry Wiederhold.  Jerry passed away this morning from his long battle with lung cancer.  He was another classmate I had made contact with over the past few years.  We had had some great conversations and I truly considered him a friend.  He shared with me his experiences in the Marines and some of his poetry.  He was just an amazing guy who rose above the trials he was given and made the very most of life.

RIP Steve and Jerry.  Know that you are fondly remembered and loved by your fellow Lancers.

My younger brother hung around with Mr. Marston, Annie's brother.

I didn't hit 300 pound bench press till well after graduate school. It did impress the high school kids at the Crescenta-Canada YMCA that the "old guy" was that strong.

I used to do a "static" lift with 8 plates (405 lbs) and they would freak out. However, you just lift it off the weight holder a couple of inches and hold it for 18 seconds.

Here's some dude doing 12 plates and yes that is Michele, during her red period, spotting.

Just saw Rosie's note.  I'll update the spreadsheet, but my memory tells me that cancer is by far our worst enemy..

Requiescat in pace Jerry and all the others.

Easter is as good a time as any to send a little shout out to one of my favoritie Bruces (the other being Bruce Lee).

I'll just mention that my Finnish grandpa is Jakob.

Some great input from the horms section. It got me inspired enough to take the trumpet down from the shelf.

Madeline Bazzel (Hooper)

Just thought if anyone wanted an update on what Jerry did in his life I'm posting a copy of his obit by his kids.

Jerry D. Wiederhold was born on June 6, 1946, in Grants Pass, Oregon to Ruth L. Foster and Earl L. Wiederhold. Jerry moved to Southern California at the age of seven. He lived much of his life in San Diego and Inland Empire areas. He joined the US Marine Corp. at 18, achieving the rank of Sergeant, serving from December 29, 1964, and being honorably discharged on November 12, 1970. Jerry was a Fixed-Wing Aircraft Mechanic in the Flying Tigers. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for his service.

Jerry proceeded to have a varied carrier from vice president of a corporate division, real estate, to hypnotherapist. His hobbies included being a pilot, artist, sewist, baker, poet, holistic medicine, square and round dancer, and jewelry maker. He truly enjoyed making cabochons and friends at the YVCMS.

He passed away on April 15, 2017, and is survived by his son, Brett, daughter, Michelle, his brothers, Bill and Bob, and amazing friends. All of whom will never forget his embrace on life and his impact on the people who came into it.

In lieu of flowers, you are more than welcome to donate to either Self-Realization Fellowship or Yucaipa Valley Gem & Mineral Society (to offset class costs, which Jerry loved to teach). Alternatively, Jerry loved to try new things in life and he would want you to try something new too.

Just a short message to say if George Gillow is still willing to give short tours of those historic houses on Del Mar Ave. I can highly recommend it. I walk around Chula Vista everyday and walk to different areas and for the most part know nothing about them but love to look at them. And now thanks to George I have a bit of information about some of them. And a big thank you to George.

Thanks, Karen,

Yes, if anyone would like the tour let me know.

It is about 1/2 hour and the walk is 3/4 mile.

As I mentioned in post 2618, these homes are all privately owned, so no inside tours are possible. This is just a walk where I tell a brief history of homes.

This is kind of a "mini history" of Chula Vista in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

GOIN' STEADY

I don't know why it came to me in the middle of the night, but it did.

Anybody go?

I did twice as I recall, with Ms. McCall and Ms. Boal.

By the time high schoool rolled around, it had GONE out of style, I think.

Corinne and I played a pretty tuff game of rigged spin the bottle at Kathy Swallow's house and did our first (and my last) scavenger hunt there also.

We saw one of these today. Not in quite as nice condition though.

"Suicide doors" and all.  Is it a 1964?
