If life gives you a lot of salt, make salt works.

1967

Apparently this footage was shot right after the bridge collapse, it's nowhereto be seen. Don't crane your neck looking for Johnny Downs there about 2:45, I checked carefully and it's not him.

Remarkably reminiscent of our family home movies of the CV housing project. A lot of going in and out of  doors, playing catch

I must have put this one on here before, but just in case (some of us are experiencing minor memory deficit).

I seem to recall my first unchaperoned* trips to TJ & Tecate as occurring in 1962. We did aomwtimes park in the Woolworth's parking lot (almost directly across from the 'New' Long Bar).

*My father disliked TJ immensely, but we did make a trip or two when relatives from Michigan visited. My mom took us down to get firecrackers. As I recall we also got cherry bombs. Fortunately, I only had a cracker go off in my hand, never a bomb.

Much later DC got a bomb dropped on his shirtless stomach as he sat in his woody during a "firefight" at K-38 1/2. OUCH! The things kids will do when there's no surf. He wasn't smiling.

Bruce,

Hard to believe Salt Mountain is still around after 50 years. The plan to sell the salt to salt winter roads and french fry's just didn't work out I guess. The latest SDG&E scheme is building a new desalinization plant in Carlsbad (almost complete). Just west of I5 at the powerplant. The processing water output will end the mussell production (famous with SD county restaraunts) and the State Fish Hatchery which are located in the west lagoon.

Carlsbad will receive a portion of the desalinated water (at an increased cost of course), and the SD County tax payers will pay for the plant )okay $1B in bonds) AND (wait for it).........the mitigations costs of cleaning up their earlier mess in the South Bay! The Costal Commission is making them clean up South Bay as a part of the deal for the new plant.

Helix High (minus Bill Walton, Reggie Bush & The Heisman Trophy) will playing for the state Division IV basketball title tomorrow in Sacramentro at noon. Funds are sparse so they're making the 507 mile trip by bus.

It's on SPCSN whatever that is.

Miles Norris has taken up some of the slack. Would Coach Wooden have allowed this hair? I think he might have. Mr. Norris transferred from CV Mater Dei (nee Marian).

BTW Marian was finally torn down in 2015 - http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2015/sep/08/stringers-marian-catholic-high-school-pieces/

Didn't Virginia go to school there?

Both UC Davis and Helix High School ended up losing.

As the Rollng Stones once said, "you can't always get what you want".

On the bright side, CV is "going all cultural" down on Third Avenue. Will Topsiders and Sir Guy shirts be banned?

Amidst downtown Chula Vista’s revitalization with craft breweries, and a new art and coffee shop, the city of Chula Vista has plans for a 6,000 square-foot arts space on Third Avenue.

..

“The vision would be that the arts space would fill an existing gap in providing arts and culture space,” said Lynnette Tessitore, Chula Vista Cultural Arts Manager. “The programming concept would be that it would be available for free or a very low cost art space for the entire community.” -

I would like to see a revitalized Chub's Club. It would be in walking distance of the brewery.

Does anyone recall who the Cultural Arts Director was back in 62-64? I'll nominate Jeanie Booth posthumously. If it's gonna be a commission then add Carl Ramsey (RIP) and Robert Lahaye (whereabouts unknow, last seen in LA) and Ronnie Schuller (RIP)...

Hi Bruce

Thanks for keeping the Forum alive and lively.

Sounds like a major revitalization of Third Avenue.

Mom  had an art space in Spanish Viillage in Balboa Park and painted on Sundays.

She would have loved this support of local artists.

Our Valley has been buying well-built but old elementary schools and turning them into Community  Centers for various non-profits for the Arts and for events.

Bruce,  I have been "home" for a couple weeks as my Mom suddenly passed away.  As we are starting the journey of going through the house (60+ years of living) a lot of memories have been rising to the surface.  The other day Frank Fernandez came to mind.  I was sharing with my sisters about him, his life, his death.  That got me to wondering if anything was ever resolved in regards to his death.  I know how it happened (my Mom sent me the news article afterwards) but what ever happened to the man who was responsible for his death,  I've tried to find info online but only find articles written at that time.  I've wondered if justice was served and figured you'd be the one to ask.  Thanks!

Bruce Wilson....thanks for the Trumpet video.  I actually just got my Trumpet refurbished, new valves, etc.  Now I am going to try and get my lip back.  Seems I need to practice in the garage however, cause when I play the dogs bark!

You may recall that back on about page 36 my post #867 was of a video of the KPBS program Wonderland on Chula Vista History. On the program Noah Tafolla was given a tour by Corinne McCall of her Frank house.

I contacted Noah yesterday to see if he was related to Rosie Hamlin's husband, Noah Tafolla, who was one of the Originals musicians. He responded that Rosie and Noah were his aunt and uncle. Here is the email exchange:

Here is Noah with Corinne from the video on post 867:

San Diego Music Radio in the 1950s and 1960s

This video is a portion of the KPBS documentary called "Remembering San Diego, The 1950s".

It is about the music radio stations and DJs of the time with comments by DJ Don Howard.

Do you remember any of these DJs?

Michele: Will get an update on FF.

Update. The murder case was filed 10/15/2015. The killer pleaded not gulity. The legal engine runs very slowly. The case file is downtown. I'm going to see if I can get some personal insights.

George:

I'm drawing a blank.

KCBQ does come to mind and Happy Hare and of coiurse Wolfman Jack.

I do remember a primitive crystal radio and these, but I didn't listen to a lot of music until after high school.

Lovely celebration of life for Steve Smith today in Point Loma. It was good to see Mr. Padelford, age 88, in attendance, looking very well. Kathy Smith was a gracious hostess. Fond memories flooded in as we watched the tribute slide show and reviewed the "old school" photos and yearbook. Classmates Rich Page and Nancy Kennedy Werber joined me in reminiscing the SDSU football games, reunion golf events and other events that brought us together. Steve lived a high energy life filled with a loving family. He was truly blessed. R.I.P.

Thank you for sharing that, Teresa. I remember Steve well. The comment about Mr. Padelford also touched me. Such an iconic figure at Hilltop.

Thanks Richard for sharing the photo from Steve Smith's Celebration of Life.  Everyone looks great, especially Mr. P.  Sorry I couldn't attend but happy to see some loyal Lancers were there. I still have many wonderful memories of my years with the band.

Thank you for the postings George and Bruce!  I am flattered.  So sorry to hear of all the passings.  Hard to believe that Angel Baby's singer is gone...such a sweet song she left behind.  I had never heard that version of my namesake song Bruce.  Thank you guys!   George, I look forward to seeing you and Shirley sometime soon!
