Huge thank you to Rosie and Dennis for allowing many HHS class of 1964, 70 and almost 70 year olds to celebrate in their home.

I always admired the good works of the women's social-service clubs. I'm sure Contemporists had service projects as well, but I was also active in Key Club. Key Club did a lot of good on campus and around town. Classmates may remember that Pat Borunda, who was a powerful public speaker and debate champion, was elected Governor of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Key Club International. Pat lives in Portland and headed the Urban Indian program there. He carried his service skills well into adulthood. I salute all of you who continue to help others. Since the reunion party is at hand, I can shout out a hearty "Hippo Birthday" to all. I will turn 70 at a zoo conference in San Diego on September 10th. Think good thoughts on my birthday, the last good day before 9-11. All the best!

Dr. Maple

I can forgive [more than] a few things, but from a guy who ran several zoos?

Isn't it  "hippo birdie"

Well this "Fun Nest" (1964)  business probably needs to be moved to the new "undegroiund" thread, but one last shot from my friend Jenny Beenfeldt (whom my father agreed with). Thanks to George for running it down.

She hit it out of the park, would be playing for Parkview if she was with us today.

And now, in the memories-of-absolutely-no-importance category...Didn't Contemps have brown sweatshirts with yellow lettering? I still have my Jarrettes sweatshirt.

Yes Gail that is the way it was (thanks for the line Mr. Cronkite) and nomenclatue was the abbrviated "Comtemps".

Memory_wise, if this finding holds up, we may all be out of the woods. Not Dr. Hoffman's acid, but nonetheless  mefenamic acid.

Well, I'm kind of fixated on Michele, but I still do have a bit of a wandering eye.

Whimsical mural in CV. Twenty extra credit points if you can ID the location.

Does anyone recall the West Side Story style rumble that ensued when The Contemps "chose off" The Deacons?.  I can tell you right now, the service was First Class. El Jefe de Deacons, Mr. David Churchill had, I believe, the largest collecton of Sir Guys in all of CV.

AND

Lest we all forget, how about those "Descenders". I can name only one member, but won't right now.

Below, it's hard to see, but that is definitely a Sir Guy this kid is wearing. The hairstyle exemplifies what Ronnie Hayes (RIP) described in his inimitable way as the "cookie duster". Did Ed Byrnes steal it from us.

Where are our royalty checks, now that we need 'em.

I am almost positive that I had this one.

Many thanks to Rosie and Dennis for opening their home to the 70th birthday celebration for the class of 1964. Food was great as was the fellowship and renewing friendships. Thank you for those who traveled great distances to attend. Your presence was priceless. Stay well, classmates. We are awesome!

No teenager here (though I knew him then too), but unidentified surfer, place, date.

You don't see many beaches like this anymore.

Would be a nice place to be with the weather we've been getting.

Below, first clue for mural location. Is this some kind of poorboy pokemon? None of the trees pictured is a Lemon.

Interestingly enough the dog that Baldy took from our dog Susie's litter got the moniker Lemon hung on him, though I haven't seen him around CV either.

Treewise, on Minot Ave. we had a Plum, Lemon and Apricot tree. The Plum tree was a prodigious producer, the others not so much.

.

While playing the game I discovered this too. It has since been either demolished or enshrined. I do not know which. I just can't find it anymore.

Nice photos Sharon, thanks. I, as were some others, was stunned when Dylan showed up (did he come with John? - That Case may never be solved). Diane and Michele, he was stage right and he didn't stay long..

BTW, I'm updating the "In Memory" spreadsheet I've asembled, so if anyone has dates or causes please let me know. I was suprised to see how long the list has become.  requiescat in pace!

This shot was from SundAy afternoon.  I made the finals the 70 over and placed 5th.  This was th 33rd Oceanside Longboard Surf Club & Guy Takayama pro/am contest.  I have been a member for over 25 years. Wish I could have represented the class of 64 better, but I had lots of fun!  Go Lancers!

Well John, I think you did just fine.

As another wise surfer John Wooden said:

Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character.

Talent is God given. Be humble.

Fame is man-given. Be grateful.

Conceit is self-given. Be careful.

I'm sorry to report that my 99 year-old uncle Gradeon died on August 15th. I've mentioned him in this forum as he was a war hero, a paratrooper-medic who jumped into Normandy with the 82nd Airborne. He made other jumps into Europe and North Africa including the Battle of the Bulge. For most of his life, he never talked about the war, but as he aged he began to open up. My sister-in-law Margaret became very close to him as she took him shopping and spent quiet time with him. Until recently, he was quite mobile. The secret to his longevity seemed to be his passion for walking. He walked every morning before the crack of dawn until he was mugged one morning. That event curtailed his walks around town. He lived in a trailer park on G Street for most of his adult life. Graydeon never married but he treated his three nephews as if they were sons. As a little boy I went to football games with Grady and my dad. When Brian began to play football at Chula Vista, they took me with them to see every one of his games. Grady then accompanied my dad when I began to play at Hilltop. In fact, he attended every basketball and baseball game I played  if he wasn't working. He was a bartender and once owned Grady's Keg in San Ysidro. In recent years, our oldest daughter Molly started to visit him whenver her business took her to California, and became quite close to him. In fact, she named her little boy "Grayden" a slightly different spelling of his name. Little Grady will be a constant reminder of his namesake, a man we will always honor and treasure. He wanted his ashes sprinkled over the Pacific Ocean, and we will honor his request. Rest in Peace dear Graydeon.

Really sorry to hear that Terry. Our condolences.

We're actually at the hospital with M's dad right now

It's been a rough 4 days but the future is looking brighter

Shayne Maree Schuller (Morgan Sledge)

Wishing Peace in your Hearts, Terry, Bruce and Michele, in these challenging times with Family.

Terry, my grandfather on my Mother's Irish side was Grady too.

Thanks Shayne.

"The Bull" is way better. He contracted Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), which is extremely rough on elderly folks. The symptoms are very similar to a cold [at first] then things can go haywire pretty quickly. It is easily detected in lab tests.

Be aware of it for yourselves and yours. I had never heard of it.

On another topic. To put it politely, it really pisses me off when anyone, but especially someone with [Graydeon, Gradeon] Grady's  credentials gets mugged. Likewise, for friends like Frank and Jimmy.

Quick check on dentists.

Casey (two), Kemler, Bandelin

It appears that my memory isn't that bad afterall, but it was McCook not Cook.

Dr.  & Mrs. Joel J.  McCook - 803 First Avenue.

Looks like they returned home from Hawaii about July 24, 1958.

George has pointed out that he was a surgeon. So I was in the ballpark, but no home run.

Any recollections of The Exchange Club. As as far as I recall it was a young professionals organization, possible follow on to the The Contemps wink

Pretty sure McCook and my dad were both in it.

The Club did a free polio clinic in January of 1961.

I recall getting my shots in elementary school at Castle Park and Hilltop Drive. Can't recall the age.
