Shayne Maree Schuller (Morgan Sledge)

The O'Day home brings back so many memories as my second home. Forts, Secret Sister's Club and oranges and badminton and cheerleader practices, play rehearsals, Brownie and Girl Scout badges, and sleepovers nearly every weekend for years (my house or yours)   Fond memories of  our families trips together,  Green Valley Lake  cabin, San Felipe Camp Marston church  My second Family.

I will be thinking of all of you Saturday, and especially you, Rosie O'Day.

ULYSSES S. GRANT JR. HOME IN BONITA

In a message post way back--#200, about page 9--Bruce mentioned that classmate Georgia Farrington's family lived in a home once owned by Ulysses S. Grant Jr., the son of President Ulysses S. Grant.

I have been watching the American Presidents series on CSPAN.  The episode on U.S. Grant had a caller from San Diego who mentioned the home in Bonita.  U.S. Grant Jr. had the house built for use as a summer home.

The home is still there at 5771 Sweetwater road, near the intersection of 125 and 54.  Part of it visible from Sweetwater road.

Below is a picture that appeared in the Chula Vista Star news of July 1st, 1958. This short clipping was from part of a long article.

Also below is a Google 3-D view and a view from the access road to the County Department of Animal Services.

LEMON TREES

In a recent post, Bruce had a question about lemon trees still in existent.

In the late 1940s, the Chula Vista City Council passed an ordinance that required that at least one lemon tree be left on each property when a lemon grove was subdivided for development of homes.

We had two lemon trees at our home at 785 Del Mar Avenue. They were still there when I sold the home in 1987.

I look forward to seeing Dennis and Rosie's lemon tree on Saturday.

I am almost 71, so will look forward to seeing all you youngsters.

Grant-Farrington home = "Farrington Farm"

That's the one George. It had hidden passageways, but I'm not supposed to tell.

There was a plan afoot a number of years back to turn the area into a resort with "The Farm" as it's centerpiece.

I have a bunch of info about the proposal, just not sure where it is.

Did I mention that Babe Ruth went fishing out at Sweetwater?

More memories for Gail & Shayne -- playing with Ginny Dolls, hanging out in the backyard, go carts down E Street.  Shayne, do you remember when our families went to San Felipe together and stayed in a 2 room house with one bathroom between them.  Your 5 and our 6 all sharing one bathroom with no lock.  We would call out "occupado"  when we went in to use it.  What a trip!

I was looking through my brother's old things and found some pictures that he treasured enough to keep for all these years.  Three are old and two are newer.  Can you identify these people?  Sorry they are so large.

Hey everyone, we are working on parking for the birthday party Saturday night.  We will be directing you to park in one of our neighbor's driveway and our front yard. Look for Dennis directing traffic.  There is plenty of parking along our street as well.  And if you come late, you may have to park along E Street (the south side) and walk up the hill.  There is no parking on E Street east of Toyon Lane down the hill.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

About the pictures:  The top two are Dave Chalmers in his later years (taken by my brother who surfed with him).  The middle one I don''t know???  Any ideas?  Don Rice maybe.  The fourth one is my brother Mike.  And Dave Schuller at the bottom.

Rosalee:

"The top two are Dave Chalmers in his later years"

I knew that :)   and thanks for sharing those with us all. I attended Dave's wake and there were many photos and even video, but I've never seen those two so I would bet that not many of DC's friends have either, so if you don't mind, I'll pass them on to some others who would appreciate seeing them.

The words of Joe Ditler:

Published on May 5, 2016

Throwback Thursday: In the days before Social Media a small film clip of "Those Amazing Animals" went viral. It featured one of Coronado's favorite duos, DC and Max. DC was Dave Chalmers. Max was his mutt-mix dog who happened to be a surfing dog, long before surfing dogs were so commonplace as they are today.

This film clip has long been lost to history, or so we thought. Recently I found an ancient VHS tape I had made, and old friend Dave Butler was able to convert it into an electronic file.

Forgive the quality, but anyone who ever knew DC or Max, who surfed with them, or shared an adventure with them (and there are many of us) will appreciate seeing this little video clip.

I sure miss you Deece. Funny how we grow older and don't realize until too late how much certain people (and dogs) filled our life with joy and made Coronado the special place it was. It's still a pretty nice place, although, I gotta say, it was a little more special when we had these two haunting the alleys and surf spots of our island.

I second that emotion.

Ah why not, we all only go 'round once.

The guy in the middle does slightly resemble Lyle, but Damon Hitchcock's name popped into my mind when I saw it, though I doubt that it's him.

I believe former Coronado boy John Peck is still with us today and has continued to surf. One of the photos is the iconic Mr. Peck at Bonzai Pipeline in 1963.

The Master of All CV Trivia is looking for answers here.

Anyone remember the Contemps (short for I believe Contemporaires). Better yet was anybody a member?

Seems to me that this social (i.e. good way to meet girls) club existed around 1962-1963. All this talk of Chalmers and Schuller reminded me that they were definitely members as was Charlie Casani. Others likely included Eddie Kellogg, Bob Gray, Jim Woodard. (it's ironic that Jim W., who lived almost right across the street from DC, and Dave both died from cancer).

It may have been inspired by Hugh Hefner. I can still see the two Daves smoking their pipes and wearing their brown sweatshirts with the name across the front. I do not recall them having business cards like the IB Mau Mau Car Club, which said "YOU HAVE BEEN ASSISTED". Not that they weren't helpful mind you. Did someone actually let the air out of soneone's tire so that he could fix it for her?

Does Shayne have any photos in her collection?

George will probably find it but I raised the club name back about #250.

Anyone recognize this well-known surf spot in IB?

Occasionally you get my attention, Bruce. The name was "Contemporists". They did have a card "You have been assisted by . . ." and I was a member. It seems to me that the sole purpose of the club was to hold joint meetings at night with girls clubs. I remember a night in Point Loma (as I recall) at a big two story house. Beer was flowing. I wasn't a big beer drinker but I was in the kitchen with Don Wilkensen and Jim Chew, two of HIlltop's stellar athletes. Someone yelled "cops" and we bolted for the back door, flew down the stairwell and ran down an alley. We dropped to the ground and crawled under some cars until the coast was clear, and then slowly walked back to the house. False alarm it seemed. Such were the advertures of the Contemporists. I don't recall being active more than a year. In fact, I think they disappeared from the social scene fairly quickly. I was a stealth drinker and very careful about the conditions and risks when I indulged. When I did drink, my favored brand was Burgie. I had my first beer at my house with my buddy George Kelly. I was fifteen at the time. He protected me from trouble on more than one occasion. When I was playing ball I avoided liquor, but the summer was open season on beer. I might have a beer once or twice a week now. There is a wonderful little restaurant/bar on the beach where I live (Fernandina Beach, FL). They serve a nice local dark micro-brew (Duke's) that I enjoy with my wife. I don't drink enough to warrant a reserved seat at the bar (it is crowded with greybeards like me), but we usually sit outide eating fried shrimp. I am living in a shrimpers paradise. .

SOCIAL CLUBS

Here are some Chula Vista Star News Clippings from the early 1960s about some of the social clubs. See Barbara's post #230 (about page 10) about these clubs.

These are from June 24th, 1962, April 2nd, 1964 and July 12, 1962.

FINAL - CV 14, Hawaii 11. Next up Saturday againt the winner of Hawaii vs. Las Vegas.

George:

That newspaper link has come in handy. Thanks for the photo of Eduardo "Eddie" Perez and the "Cons". Funny how Jasenik got into the picture and not my mom who did his job for him for many years. "Torrie", also shown, was my boss for a time. Her name is mispelled, but I can't recall the correct spelling.

Terry:

It's a trivial pursuit, but I haven't been taken into custody by the authorities since I started it.

So was the inspiration really Hugh Hefner and what brand of  cherry smoking tobacco was preferred?

I do not know how DC got involved because there were plenty of girls at the beach.

I did not drink (at least in the U.S.) until I was 21.

Pt. Loma house could have been Karen Vanderwyck's or (not likely) Sue Zimdars. Sue is the one who accompanied me to the "Juvenile Hall" after the "Fun Nest" was busted and a well known dentist's daughter was excluded from the trip. She did not drink either.

Fun Fun Fun till daddy takes that T-Bird away.:

Thanks to Jenny Beenfeldt for coming to the aid, in The Star News, of all those maligned by an overzealous police dept. The text of her letter is online, maybe George will dig it up.

My father, the lawyer and judge, and knew about these things, called the whole affair bogus. I therefore, did not get into too much trouble since he was madder at the police than he was at me.

The theme song of the Fun Nest was "Louie Louie" it played repeatedly (some might say incessantly) on one of  those automatic replay phonographs. Fractured Flickers was the preferred TV show. on a very tiny screnn TV. Just rotate that arm to the right and "presto", infinite Louis Louis. Were we the real inspiratin for Animal House?

"Me gotta go"

Not fun:

I still cannot get over the day at K38.5 when a firecracker fight broke out and poor ol' DC got a cherry bomb exploded on his shirtless stomach as he sat is his woody - OUCH. With Max & Dave's TV appearances, he may be pushing into Tom Waits territory, eh?

Hi Jo Karen:

We're not old, we just look old(er) and we've detuned the memory crankshaft a little.

Dr. Gary Lynch up at UCI is working on a fix as we speak.

He has detuned his hair which used to look just like the dendrites above back in the sixties when I met him.

Yes, my brother was in the Contemporists and, for all 3 years at HHS, I was in, what we humbly and modestly called Les Belles Filles

The Joint Meetings (which in Colorado now has a new meaning) were opportunities to have tame parties with the boys clubs..Our Spring Flings to "far away places" like Laguna Beach  made us feel adventurous.

Rosie was in the Jarettes.

Our Christmas caroling in town and at Fredrika Manor are memorable for me. As a service club,we would also go and help feed and socialize with the residents and they would light up when the exuberence of youth entered the room.

I wrote a rather somber poem about Fredrika Manor in college, a subliminal understanding of the elderly being marginalized. This is more poignant now, with us  becoming the Elders of the Tribe..

Very well said, Shayne.  Speaking of us elders -- tonight's the night for the 70th birthday get together.  I can't wait to see all of you who will be here and get caught up.  Be sure to come casual and save some room for appetizers and birthday cake.  Five to Nine pm at the Mason home.  BYOB and look for the balloons!  Our street is a little tricky to see.
