PIGGLY WIGGLY MYSTERY SOLVED

Going back to post # 45 on trying to find out when the Piggly Wiggly was located at 281 3rd, the old Chula Vista Star Newspapers have the answer (thanks again Bruce).

The earliest article on the store was in 1931 about the building being purchased by Piggly Wiggly. The last reference was in 1947. The 1952 directory does not show anything at that address. So it was closed in the late 1940s or very early 1950s.

Here is an advertisement from September 11th, 1936 (the address is at the bottom left of the ad):

More good work George. Bully for you.

I certainly knew Marla Kay Miller and Ms. Booth.  I don't think I would have recognized them.

It appears that back in the day when it was OK to eat bacon it was only $.38/lb from Mr. Wiggly or was it Mr. & Mrs. Wiggly. I wonder if they practiced at the dance studio.

Genetics, HDL & heart disease risk.

http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/03/11/Good-cholesterol-may-not-always-be-good-for-health/4741457727632/

Gonna give the " Duh! Award" to the first sentence.

"The work demonstrates that the protective effects of HDL are more dependent upon how it functions than merely how much of it is present," Dr. Daniel Rader, chair of the genetics department at the University of Pennsylvania, said in a press release. "We still have a lot to learn about the relationship between HDL function and heart disease risk. Eventually we may want to perform genetic testing in persons with high HDL to make sure they don't have mutations -- like this one -- that raise HDL but don't protect against, or may even increase, risk for heart disease."

We started taking dancing lessons at Beryl Hood's studio when I was 4 and my sister was 6: ballet, tap, and "acrobatics." Barbara, we may have taken some classes together! We took those lessons for years and years. And George, yup - Mr. Benjamin's all the way through, from lessons to Cotillion. Those dances were *really* fun. I know that there are a lot of our classmates, who are still around, who went to Mr. B's classes and Cotillion.  §  We got all of our milk and other dairy products at that dairy, so 4th and C/Highland was a very familiar spot as I grew up.

Other internet places that I hang out on have the capability to start and post to topical threads. I think that's what's missing here.

How does one go about using the "User forums" option on this site.

It looks like the place where threads could be started and maintained. It wouild make it a lot easier to follow for example, what's going on down there at Fourth and C, Highland and C or North Fourth and C.

Don't even get me started on CC Rider.

Sorry, no forums are available.

Okay, so I never was much of a dancer, but didn't JoAnne Ledfords mom operate a dance studio out of her house on Helix Ave?

On a different subject I remember being in Mr. Clark's art class when the news came that JFK had been killed. John broke the news to us in a very emotion delivery and then dismissed us for the day. Many of our classmates from HHS were involved in art classes at Southwestern. The link below has some nice stuff:

I was almost Bruce Lee, but my parents went with Carlton and gave the Lee to my little brother.

Mr. Cox was the owner of the Try Angle Market (correct spelling) @ 796 Third Ave. which was burglarized the week of August 8, 1957. If you have any information regarding this, please call crimestoppers.

It appears that the appropriate spelling of Butch's name is actually Dowayne and that he may have lost his license in 1962. Additionally, it seems that he was in the Marine Corps in 1982.

Column A - I'm only batting 600 here. Anyone know all five and the year?

Column B - I'm pretty sure I'm battin' 800 here. All five and year?

Class sizes at Hilltop Drive Elementary school were fairly consistently 32-33.

[George Church, renowned Harvard geneticist, 2016] said that aging should be thought of as a program that might be reversed, noting, "If we could take one of my skin cells and turn it into an embryo-like cell and turn it back into a skin cell it has reset almost all of the developmental indications of age. We have 65 gene therapies that are being test in mice and larger animals. If they go well we will go straight into human trials. That could be as little as two years ...

So Terry, given that they are successful are you going to shoot for Column A or Column B?

Don't rag

Feel free to fast forward. He actually does 100 at a time. Interestingly, for me, doing a lot, stresses triceps more than abs.

Recommends cod liver oil too. Everybody taking their turmeric?

I will fault him for his choice in music though.

Michele Lynette Adney (Aldrich)

Greetings from Iowa!  My Mom sent me the news article about Frank Fernandez.  I just finished reading it and find myself feeling so heavy-hearted.  Yes, I was one of those quiet, shy girls that admired him from afar. I was glad that I was able to see him at our 50th.  Just saddened to see the toll his life had taken on the handsome, vibrant young man I remembered from school.  My heart broke as I read of the ending of his life.  Still, it's a blessing that we have fond memories to hang onto.  He will always be that "cute football player" that I had a silent crush on.  blush The other one "L" Michele

Column A with Frank on top, Baldy and me down below. I'll have to noodle on the other boys. B looks like sixth grade and A must be fourth or fifth grade. I was a bit porky then. I'm not sure about the dates but I think we entered seventh grade in 1958 so the grade school photo is probably that year. I turned twelve on September 10, 1958. I'm wondering if one of those boys is bad Bob Waitzman. I walked to school with him sometimes because he was so funny. He had a very foul mouth, reminding me of my father. I was not allowed to use dirty words but they were ubiquitous in my house. I couldn't really hang out with Bob becasue he was always into trouble, but I was fascinated by him. I spent my career observing nonhuman primates and other animals, but I got my start observing adolescent boys (largely to survive). The boys were only slightly more complex than baboons so it was good training for my future career.

Terry:

Column A is Fifth Grade 1956 and Column B is Sixth Grade 1957.

The Sixth grade has a photo of Mr. Hall. The only one I've ever seen.

Pretty sure that's Waitzman alright. Sandra Ross is the other, I can't figure out the one at the top.

I tried to hang out with the more musically inclined apes.

Thanks to Karen Tachiki who originally posted these.  I have managed to misplace my originals, but they're around here somehwere. There were two fifth grades Ms. Malecki (sp?) and Mrs. Treais. Who was the second sixth grade teacher?

Top row, every other one, Castle, Hughes, Holland, Anderson, Fernandez.

Below, right next to the one who we can't seem to identify (row 1, column 1) is Janie Haffly of Halsey St., who was one of Frank's first crushes. He used to drag me down there to "tease" her.

Row 2, Column 6 and Row 3, Column 6. Did Joy have a sister? Interestingly, this is the class with 33.

National City Mariachi Festival and Competition

This is from last year (in my former home town of National City). I missed this year's yesterday.

Great place for a 70th birthday party. Too bad. Performers are from San Ysidro.

Frank and I used to tease Jim, as Stuckey de 'sidro.

Treasa Struble (Skiles)

Bruce-One of the favorite 5th grade teachers was Mrs. Rainbolt. She also directed the school chorus. She was tall and graceful with a hint of a Texas accent. My favorite memory of her was when she read aloud to the class. There was a series of books about a little girl name Lecrecia (sp?) crossing the country in a covered wagon with her family--it was not Little House on the Prarrie. Mrs. Rainbolt read with drama which made the stories come alive. Often a student or two would fall asleep during this time, as the reading was usually after lunch. When she directed the chorus, she insisted that if a word started or ended with an "s" sound, that we all hit the "s" together so as not to sound like  a room full of snakes. If memory serves, Karen Tachiki, Madelyn Bazzel, Kathy Swallow, Joy Z, Lynn Iwashita and Joyce Norman were also in the chorus. Sorry, but my expired brain cells can't remember too many others who were in the chorus. Everyone who knew Mrs. Rainbolt was truly blessed to have such a wonderful person in their lives.

Sweet story and thanks Treasa. I remember her now that you jogged my brain a bit. So were there ever three fifth grade classes simultaneously or just two at a time?

There had to have been two sixth grade teachers, but I'm just not getting the second one.

SOCAL HIGH SCHOOL B-BALL: AND MORE MELTING POT

Chino Hills, led by the Ball Bros, Lonzo, LaMelo, and LiAngelo and Elizjah Scott and  Onyeka Okongwu overpowered Foothills Christian (San Diego) (82-62).

It does pay to read the stats yourself.

The Bros shot 28.8% and CH forced 24 turnovers, while committing 12.

The Big OO (19 points and 11 rebounds in addition to checking T.J Leaf, the outstanding FC senior on his way to UCLA) is a 6' 9''freshman.
