Richard Thor (Dick) Holmes

SVLL Manager, Ward Lanam, is a HHS Grad.   Believe he was in our daughters class in 1987?

Hi Dick,  Funny I sent the same message to Bruce.  My daughter Wendy also went to school with Ward.  She and my grandson also made it to the game in San Bernardino.

Rusty and I had some classes together at UCSB, since we were both English majors. At the time, I, too, wanted to be an English professor (huge market for that job.....NOT). Mark Raynes was also there, a year ahead of us, but he was majoring in some sort of math or engineering, so *obviously* we had no classes together.  cheeky  I hung out with Lyn Burns and Kathy Bennett, HHS '63.

BASEBALL

It took some doing (it's much easier to get Major League box scores than Little League).

SVLL - 3 errors, 9 left on base, 2 home runs (Lannom, Baptista), Baptista 3 RBI

Waipio - 3 errors, 6 left on base , 0 home runs,. Koahou 2 RBI, Hunter Sasaki 2 RBI

You have to join a site to get the box scores, but the overview is here.

Just read that Tracy Morgan is "stoked" (1962?, 1963?) to be heading back to Saturday Night Live.

Back in the saddle again re: Hilltop Circle/Hilltop Village:

1943/08/20 - Hilltop Circle: Govt to build a 3rd rec center in Chula Vista, at Hilltop and J St, for Hilltop Circle village defense project, will have offices, medical quarters, maintenance quarters, game and play rooms, and auditorium 35 x 21 ft. The other centers are at park Way adjacent to civi bowl, and Vista Square at National and G st. -- Aug. 27 - Another rec center will be built in Palm City, land donated by Robert Egger, will be ball park and library. ( Chula Vista Star, Aug. 20, 1943. )

1943/08/27 - Hilltop Circle: Housing projects adding 1200 persons each to Chula Vista's population (Vista Square 299 units, Hilltop 300 units) ( Chula Vista Star, Aug. 27, 1943. )

This gives an idea of what the buildings were like and also yours truly pre-Sir Guy (1947-48). Not a bad 'do', eh?. My dad drove out from Michigan and my mom followed on the train (to Washington). Then they relocated to National City after the war ended. I thnk that is our forty Ford.

That's not a 40 Ford.  Looks like a 46-48 somewhere.

Phil:

You have passed the test and are now eligible for membership in the Hawes/Wilson Car Club. Yikes, if that is a '48, then it was a new car.

We have no meetings or jackets or plaques.

From calculus we know that the slope of that backend is not correct, right? It's hard to tell, but any guesses on the year of the sedan will be forwarded to Butch H. for authentication.

This used to be mine. I was gonna hot rod it, then decided it should be left original and I sold it to a collector.

In regard to the local little league champions, the Lannom Little League dynasty goes back to a member of the class of 1966 according to my brother. The father/grandfather of the current participants is an alumni of HHS Class of 1966, Ward Lannom. The connections/legacy of HHS graduates is remarkable. And the most remarkable thing to me is how all of you remember any of this information that is posted on our reunion website. Hope you all continue to carry on so we can read about what was happening back in the day.

Karen isn't that something my brother Duane went to school with Ward, the grandfather and my daughter went to school with Ward the dad and manager of the little league team. This is our areas third team to go to the world series.  My grandson was on the Pony League team that went as far as one game from their world series.  Isn't life with baseball and family fun.  Now my grandson seems to be taking up where his great uncle Duane left off in school sports.  He plays basketball and baseball for Hilltop. He is a sophmore now, one year down three to go.

I think I have a photo of  the Food Basket team around here somewhere. I'm pretty sure Duane was on that team.

The game today looks like a rain-out. In the last 16 games SVLL has 72 homerums (every player on the team has at least one). The hitting is by design. They do a ton of hitting in practice.

Ward is in the 1964 yearbook (spelled both Lannon and Lannom).

BTW, that Lincoln/Hilltop game that Rags remembered so fondly? Lincoln 25, Hilltop 2. I think Vernus may have run for 3 td's.

Public service reminder. Back up your computer(s). I know better and didn't and may now have to pay to get a pretty large (1.5 terabyte) disc into readable condition.

Going forward, I'm opting for smaller, and more, discs. The notebook I'm using has a 320gb disc and this size disc is about $36. I bought two and cloned (complete image copy) my machine twice.

They are Western Digital discs and the software is free. It took roughly an hour per copy. I also purchased a drive "caddy" which lets you place the disc in the machine where the DVD drive usually sits. It's not a big deal (one screw) to swap the two, but I hardly ever use the DVD drive so it's more or less permanently out.

Dick Holmes, if you're out there (or anyone else who knows). What's up with these shoes? These are not a memory of mine from high school, but I will say these are not Converse or Topsiders. John is looking so good I would peg him for a Hollywood Presbyterianer. He and Bob are matching (exactly) stride for stride.. Who is pacing whom?

08/20/15 09:57 PM #1551

Richard Thor (Dick) Holmes

John and Bob running barefoot in the picture - we all did!  Running shoes from Nike and Addidas came out about the time of our senior year.  They were tire treads for a sole, the Nike came up with the waffle trainer shoes later.  The tire tread shoes were slippery and not the kind of traction on our dirt track that we wanted.  Bob was/is a pure distance runner and John was really built for the mile.

More Dave Chalmers and Max. Not in our class, but what's a year or two among friends

It must have been around 1965 a bunch of us went out to the golf course and bought all the white visors. A favorite trick was to pull the brim down over someone else's nose without getting yours pulled. Another form of the noogie knocker?

Thanks Dick. I'd seen that photo a number of times, but never looked at it. I appreciate your info and insight.

When I ran the Carlsbad Marathon a few years back, I ran next to a guy for a while who was doing the entire race (on asphalt) barefoot. Said he did it all the time.

There is only one guy 70+ who has done a sub 3 hour marathon, Ed Whitlock.

There's an entertaining book about ultra- distance runners called "Born to Run" written by a Pulitzer Prize winning author from Sports Illustrated.  Well researched and several twists and turns.  Barefoot is good; we were actually born that way!

Coronado Bridge

You can't keep a good bridge down I guess. Four base jumpers jumped last night. The getaway boat driver was reportedly a graduate of the Naval Academy. The group was detained, but nobody knew what to charge them with, will probably get a ticket in the mail for "creating a public nuisance". By funny coincidence we drove over the bridge about 15 minutes before.

RUNNING

Thanks Dick. The Tarahumara run very long distances. Mostly in these hi-tech numbers. I wonder if thay all have Morton's toe (second toe longer than first)?

Whitlock wears shoes and trains in a graveyard.

When at the height of marathon training, Whitlock does cemetery loops for 3 hours a day, every day. He doesn't do pick-ups or progression runs or marathon-pace work. He doesn't even stop for water. Just 3 hours a day of what he calls "plodding" or "jogging."

From their demeanor and the errors, it appears that our gang got psyched. I am predicting a strong comeback.

I'm not sure if this link has been posted before but it contains 650+ pictures of Chula Vista. There are quite a few taken from Hilltop and Chula Vista HS yearbooks in the 60's but also a lot of earlier photos of downtown! If you haven't seen it enjoy!  Just paste the link and click "next" or "previous".

Camp Minnewawa 1940...I did not know this!

Chula Vista HEMP plant 1942....oh really!

New housing development around Hilltop & L St, late 1950s

Actually this picture had to be early 1950's probably 1952 or 53. Probably taken from the then empty lot where Cook Elementary was built. I think the car in the photo is heading west on East "L" St. and the intersection may be E. Fortuna St. (Ms. Mangles??? help!!!) There was a natural drainage ditch on the east side of the Cook Elementary playground.

Thanks Jim. I've seen a lot of those photos, but it is nice to have them all together in one place. It looks like they went through the library photos, these class renunion pages, the year books and their own personal archives.
