oh DUH! Correction on my Isla Vista comment: the along-the-beach street was Del Playa, not Del Prado. (sorry, Shayne) I was thinking of Dana Point, the first town I lived in when I moved to Orange County. My bad.
Bruce's picture of V-J day on the previous post # 1515 showing two women in Horton Plaza fountain also shows a man in the center of the picture who is wearing a tee-shirt and standing between a sailor and a person holding a towel. According to the book "We Pulled Together..And Won!, he is Jesse Thompson from Bonita, California.
Does anyone know about Jesse Thompson?
Below is a 3 minute video of part of a PBS documentary on the end of the war and VJ Day. It was done in 1985 and has interviews. The lady who talks about the condom balloons was a photographer in San Diego nightclubs during the war. I put the video on YouTube as unlisted.
I suggest this as a good view for tomorrow afternoon:
Just down the way from the bridge is the Silver Strand. Say it ain't so Joe, Shacks is now a hazardous waste dump?
In 1984, the Navy set aside 75 acres on Silver Strand as a California least tern nesting preserve. The disposal area is located within the preserve. The location of this area is provided in Figure 3.4-1. This area was then designated as Delta South, and is now fenced and inaccessible to the public." "3.4.1.3.3 Use Hazardous materials currently used in support of physical aspects of SSTC training activities include petroleum products, coolants, cleaning compounds, batteries, explosives, and pyrotechnic materials. Most of the hazardous materials used at SSTC are stored in the Hazardous Material Minimization Center at NBC. Ordnance is stored in Ready Service Lockers."
The official word of the Japanese surrender came out at 4:01 p.m. according to the San Diego Union.
Below are three videos taken on August 14th, 1945. The first is taken in Hawaii, the second in San Diego and the third at Times Square, New York City.
The San Diego Union article, on the right, is a description of some of the events that day written by Harold Keene who worked for a newspaper in 1945 (Later he was commentator for TV8 News)
Sirens sounded, car horns honked, train whistles sounded and church bells rang. People came out of offices into streets and confetti was dumped out of office windows. People were singing, laughing, praying, and drinking.
There was so much drinking in San Diego that officials ordered bars and liquor stores closed. So people went down to bars in Tijuana and officials there had to close down bars.
Churches and synagogues held services and a victory thanksgiving service was held, that evening, in Balboa Stadium.
They seem to like to hit the ball. Prior to Thursday's win:
Previous two games - 27 runs, 30 hits, 10 home runs
Previous 14 games - 67 home runs, 213 hits, outscored opponents 206-46
Sweetwater Valleyj Little League (SVLL) 'no-no' list. Luckily bats are no longer considered dangerous (at least in camparison to knives and guns. I wonder about pool cues).
The following are PROHIBITED at SVLL

No Gum
No Hard Spikes
No Skateboards
No Scooters
No Bicycles
No Rollerblading
No Coolers
No Alcoholic Beverages

No Weapons (includes Guns and Knives)
For current and aspiring primatologists, rare sock money @ 1:14. No Harold Keen.
For $20 one can ride the SVLL game bus up to Berdoo and attend in person. However, this city is the birthplace of the hell's angels and they haven't gotten the message about sticks (and Stones). The weekend of Altamont I chose to stay home and study.
Moving back to 1964 or so...Does anyone else remember when Eddie Peabody, probably the best banjo player ever, came and did an assembly for us? I think Mr. Padelford arranged for it thru some personal connection. My dad was a huge fan so I called him to tell him and he left his Mission Valley office and came to the assembly. I was happy he was there but remember thinking it was kind of odd to see him standing in the back of the gym. Some banjo music on a PBS pledge break last night led me down memory lane. I think Russ Alsobrook played banjo? Maybe it was guitar.
Bruce, yes the video you posted on #1526 was the same one that I posted on #77 back on page 4.
This TV-8 news video is one of my YouTube videos (All of my YouTube videos can be seen by doing a search (or clicking here) on "gsquarb". Some are on my website at www.gillow.com.
As I mentioned on the #77 post: "Notice how in the story about the injured man, that they give his name and address and play somber music in the background".
Interesting side note, Mr. Alsobrook sometimes goes by Russ T. Alsobrook and he was born in the same hospital (Hollywood Presbyterian) as Michele. Interesting side note two, I was once offered his old surfboard by Sandy. I turned it down since it was not autographed. Turns out that the guitar player turned up at Sandy's house right around this time. I do not know if he too turned down the surfboard.
They grow 'em good looking up there in Hollywood, no?
Hear Rusty in his own words here (I like this because it gives me hope that someone is going to put up a site where you can just archive sound bites, with no video).
This 1975 HHS site has a teachers entry on it that says it was last updated in June, 2015.
It lists Ken Anderson as unkown, but I've seen him at the YMCA in the last six months or so. Ken has told me a while back that Ted Testa was not in good health.
In an exciting game with lots of hitting (and errors) SVLL bet Waipio, Hawaii, 12-10. They are now back in Williamsport (having left last night on a 1:00 AM flight). There do not appear to be any $20.00 flights back east.
An interesting side note; had SVLL lost last night the Hawaii team would have gone even though SVLL had previously beaten them in the tournament. Single elmination in the championship game, double elsewhere. Not sure I approve of this rule change.
Here's the field and Farrington Farm aerial view. For those who don't get back in town much, that's Sweeterwater Res.
It is rumoured that Freud visited Sweetwater on at least one occasion.
Gail---I remember Eddie Peabody in concert in our gym. Great banjo player. What a treat and yes, Mr. Padelford was the one to arrange it, I think. Joan Hensley Erickson
Hi Bruce---thanks for mentioning my book. I'm currently working on two more suspense books--One set in Hawaii and one in Australia and San Diego. I love writing suspense and mystery. I suppose that love of writing came to me at Hilltop High. Worked on the student newspaper. Joan
My pleasure Joan. It's great to hear about people doing what they like and being successful.
Some of us probably remember that Pete Rombold (1963) is a bullfighter. These bullring by the sea and border photos are from 2012 and from a perspective you don't see every day. Done via kite.
Sign of the times. Except for "CURRENT RESIDENT" and USPS notice pretty much all of this ad (both sides) is in Spanish. To get your degree in the old days you had to have two "foreign" languages. One of mine was German and they let me substitute a computer language "LISP" for my second. I can do the Spanish accent pretty well, just don't have the syntax and semantics down yet.
