Gail:

Brad's father was a doctor. Brad is an architect. He and I were in Berkeley at the same time, but never crossed paths. He is very successful, not much interested in reunions and such.

Jim Frese (James L. Frese, DPM), board certified/Podiatry practiced in CV for a while. Jim, Frank and I used to pal around and I know Jim had to overcome some tough obstacles to become successful.

My bad. It appears that Judy Peters is not an attorney. The directory I was looking at (San Diego County Attorneys, 1985) does not have a photo and I notice now that it is Judith A. Peters, not Judith D. Peters.

The info on Brad is correct (got it right from him).

I did not get a chance to talk to either Mr. Rice or Mr. Padelford at the get together, but here's  a photo of my 7th grade homeroom teacher (were they called advisors?), the man who signed my CPJHS ribbons, which I still have (and another mystery guess(t)). Patty can't participate in this one.

Lawyer stories? Yeah I got 'em -  and shoes, likewise. Cliff-jumping? Yep.

So folks say to me, "Bruce why do you {spend} {waste} so much time on that high school forum?"

Well,

Right around our last year of high school Paul Simon finished the song in which he wrote:

"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls..."

With a nod to Steve McKinney, I'll point out that:

There are no subways in Chula Vista.

Ah, but the tenement halls you say? What about them?

The tenement I lived in has been torn down and replaced with the Hilltop Junior High School.

Thanks for the correction on Brad, Bruce. Would have been nice to see him at the reunion. I was with a group of friends last night, one of whom was heading to his 50th. Someone said, "How could there be anyone you care about after all this time? How can you remember anyone?" We're a fortunate group, huh?

Here's what I'm talkin' about. 1962 and fitting in light of Terry's comments. Looks like photographer caught Vredenburgh mid-smile too. I don't think he was smiling in our Little League photo.

This is Linda Keating's story in response to a link about South Bay surfing history:

Thank you Bruce for posting the South-Coast Surfing link today. -- Sparks many fond vivid memories from the mid 60's when I was fortunate to crew on-board the Princess II. -- My job was working the 'Pilot House' & to report to Captain Tom Warner or to Richard ("JOLY") if the horizon became anything other than 'horizontal'. -- Mr Jerry Lewis had sold his Princess II to 2 brothers, Marco & Polo, (actual/real-names-no joke) south of Mazatlan, MEXICO (Acapulco) who made a previous agreement w/Mr. Lewis to deliver no later than Christmas Eve or the deal was off. -- This particular December,,the weather/temperatures had been consistently perfect all the way from the Kona Kai dock to tip of BAJA near Cabo San Lucas,,however,,,right before crossing BAJA over to the Mainland/Mexico,,Captain Warner had received severe storm warnings (not a perfect storm) demanding to delay crossing until the storm passed,,, So this is my "glad you are here to tell it" story,,because warnings were ignored,,,& yet the Princess II and the entire crew survived. -- 'Marco & Polo' were very happy we met our 'dead-line',,,,& we were all just happy to still be alive....One of the best adventures

(time/date correction-this trip occurred during WATERGATE, so correct date is closer to early 70's instead of -earlier mentioned- mid 60's),.. Earlier during this adventure before crossing over to the Mainland of Mexico,.. (' the calm before the storm'),,,we were so close to schools of Dolphin,.& Giant Sea Turtles,,,& Manta-ray that (if you wanted to) you could (almost) touch them,,-- I still have several perfect patina abalone shells that the fishermen were giving away when we would occasionally dock & purchased live lobster from the fishermen right on shore there for 2 peso's. <> <> Will try to find out 'how to' share/post photo's I still have of Richard "JOLY" (of South-Coast Surfboards) & working on deck the Princess II during balmy weather..while the sea were still calm. <> ,....to be continued,,,

,,,((so,,meanwhile,,back to the Princess II & "adventures on the high seas",..my personal true story-early 70's')) <><> After parking Tom Warner's antique/vintage Navy blue Bentley at the Kona Kai.,,& saying good-bye to our "land-legs" & being introduced now to acquiring "sea-legs",,all of the crew members began boarding the Princess II.--After becoming more acclimated to our new surroundings & better understanding our duties,,,,we slowly embarked,.. navigating south toward the tip of Baja experiencing several days of calm seas & balmy weather enjoying all the exquisite scenery along the way.--While crewing on-board- Due to each crew members' duty,,the experience is completely encompassing so one can live ONLY in the present as you become one with the sea & the ship,,,as this now IS your entire world.--Then after reaching the tip of Baja,,,the ship's captain ignored all apparent storm warnings, (due to a dead-line he agreed to meet),,the HORIZON increasingly became VERTICAL,,,(my job in the "Pilot House" was to report any unusual weather patterns),,& so no, reporting to Captain Warner was not necessary.--While waves were crashing & the sky became up-side down,,-- The water-pump/other pumps/engines & equipment had all stopped functioning,,& every crew member now on-board very quickly & suddenly,,became "A true-BELIEVER" & began praying & singing old GOSPEL tunes & hymns & calling out in the name for the LORD GOD Almighty to HELP us ! ! <><> - At this time - we did not know how the Princess II ever survived the storm that ripped into our boat (62 foot PACEMAKER) that day while crossing over from the tip of Baja near Cabo San Lucas to the Mainland/Mexico,,,However,.. now reflecting, in retrospect, am pretty sure by now,,we all realize that it was only by the sheer/pure grace & miracle of God that we all (including the Princess II) were saved through that storm & were not only still alive, but were ALL still in one piece.--Amazing the experiences we ALL have lived through to 'share & tell',..&... <>"I Am Glad You Are Here To Tell It !"<> Reading all of YOUR notes & comments & photo's,,etc.,on this forum is so much fun & is very encouraging & inspiring.--Please keep your bio's & input happening while we still have this awesome HHS Message Forum opportunity still available for us to tell everyone/anyone interested to know more about,,,our very own/personal true story. . I love this story of Linda Keating!'s naval adventure!   No one tells a story quite like Linda.  I would love for her to tell her "true  life story" of being detained on a Christmas Eve, by the Federales in T.J. (with classmate Chris M?).  The two girls were in a fender bender and were taken to a faciltity in TJ when they decided (in true Lancer spirit) to make a run for it and locked themselves in their car.   They awakened on Christmas morning to their car being towed - with them in it - out to the desert.  All is well that ends well - but you have to get the story from Linda to get the full impact of this tale!

Although still among us, former Disneylander, computer nerd and BTW, our age, is set to receive a lifetime achievement award. Can Rusty be far behind?

http://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ians/steve-martin-to-receive-lifet-achievement-award-114100400475_1.html

Although she didn't attend the HHS, she was with us at HJHS, Virginia McCormack is a licensed attorney and always very friendly when I contact her.

My former girlfriend Liz Eldridge (HHS 1965) is an attorney also, but not so much. Liz ran for judge at one point. I do not recall her winning.

Jan Ronis (HHS 1963) was the chosen attorney for the Arellano Felix trial, but the judge would not allow him to due to a conflict. Relevance? Ronis was one our cliff-jumping crew at Sunset Cliffs.

"Government lawyers, in essence, argued that Ronis was known as an attorney for the Tijuana cartel and had provided counsel for witnesses that would testify against Arellano Felix in the current case. As they put it, Ronis had "involvement in factual events that may become issues at trial."

Ronis told CNN that the accusations levied against him were "absolutely untrue" and "manufactured to make sure Mr. Arellano didn't have his counsel of choice."

Linda and Corinne:

Was it Christine (John & Steve's sister - well OK and Chad, MaryAnn & Cecilia)?

Exercise and Dementia:

Relatively old, 2010. I'm looking for their follow up as to what type and how much In this one

"..adults were randomly assigned to receive either moderate-intensity aerobic exercise 3 d/wk or stretching and toning exercises that served as a control. ".

Exercise training increases size of hippocampus and improves memory

http://www.pnas.org/content/108/7/3017.full

Abstract

The hippocampus shrinks in late adulthood, leading to impaired memory and increased risk for dementia. Hippocampal and medial temporal lobe volumes are larger in higher-fit adults, and physical activity training increases hippocampal perfusion, but the extent to which aerobic exercise training can modify hippocampal volume in late adulthood remains unknown. Here we show, in a randomized controlled trial with 120 older adults, that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the anterior hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. Exercise training increased hippocampal volume by 2%, effectively reversing age-related loss in volume by 1 to 2 y. We also demonstrate that increased hippocampal volume is associated with greater serum levels of BDNF, a mediator of neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus. Hippocampal volume declined in the control group, but higher preintervention fitness partially attenuated the decline, suggesting that fitness protects against volume loss. Caudate nucleus and thalamus volumes were unaffected by the intervention. These theoretically important findings indicate that aerobic exercise training is effective at reversing hippocampal volume loss in late adulthood, which is accompanied by improved memory function.

Michele Lynette Adney (Aldrich)

Just got home Tuesday after 3 lovely weeks in sunny HOT San Diego,  My time was started by our reunion.  I'm really glad I attended!  So many faces that I actually recognized (those who have TRULY not changed in 50 years .... how do they do that?)  It was fun connecting with some of you that I've chatted with on this forum.  I just wish there had been more time to actually sit down and share.  Because of a memory blip (can't be old age creeping up!) I forgot to pick up something I'd put on the memorbilia table.  But because of that, I was blessed with an opportunity to sit down and chat with Rosie in her lovely home.  That is a special memory that I've brought back home with me.  I want to say "thank you" to all of you who put so much time & effort into making it a fun evening.

The rest of my time in my old "stomping" grounds was spent with my family.  We have some new places that I always love to visit .... our favorite being the Ferry Landing on Coronado.  Spent LOTS of time sitting and watching people, sailboats, Navy ships & sipping latte's.  I also had to have my ham torpedo from LaBella's and some good authentic Mexican food.  They juuussst don't quite measure up here in the Midwest!  And, of course, I had to go walking on the beach.  It soothes the soul of this Cali-gal!  I'm adding (I hope) a picture of what I came home to.  The tree is in my front yard (can't see house because it's in the shade)  In a couple of weeks those leaves will ALL be bright gold, orange & red ..... then they will be all over my yard needing to be raked up,  You are all welcome to come help with that chore,  *_*

Again, it was great to get to see so many.  And it even warmed my heart to have some of you actually remember this shy "girl" who always had her nose in a book.

Hi Michele,

I am so glad that you made it home safely, and that tree, by the way, is gorgeous.  Having real seasons must be delightful.  I was the fortunate one who (because of your little Lancer dog) had a chance to really visit with you and find out what you've been up to for the past 50 years.  That is a true serendipity blessing.  So glad you enjoyed your stay!  Next time you come out, I hope you'll make the Mason home a stop on your list.  We'll keep your bench on the ferry landing warm for you....

Rosie

Hi, Michele !!!

(It's me, Michele Walter) We were wondering what kind of tree it is....?  Could be a Maple tree, but it is hard to zero in close enough to the leaves.  It is BEAUTIFUL!  We love it!!!  Thank you for traveling so far to come to the reunion...it was a treat to get reacquainted and to visit at the reunion.  I wish that the time hadn't gone by so quickly...take care, special lady, and thank you again!  Michele

Season Colors

I kind of envy those of you who live in parts of the country with lots of trees and changing colors.  We often thought about moving to somewhere like New England that has changing seasons.  But my engineering career, local politics, the beach, the weather and pre-Proposition 13 property tax have kept us here in Chula Vista.

However, there are some places with fall colors in the San Diego area.  The Laguna and Palomar Mountains are particularly colorful in the fall.  My favorite was Cuyamaca State park. But it was almost all destroyed by the 2003 fire.

Here are some pictures of fall in San Diego:

This is San Dieguito River Park near Encinitas.  Taken in 2010.

Yes, Michele, it's a maple.  It's actually the prettiest tree on the block (per neighbors) and when the leaves fall, my yard becomes a playground.  Nothing more fun that jumping into a big pile of leaves.  Must admit, it's not just the children that can be seen taking a flying leap into the pile.  Thank you all for sharing the beautiful leaves.  Beatrice, thank you for giving a name to those trees.  I've noticed them the past number of years when I've come "home" to visit.  I don't remember them being around when I was growing up there.  I remember the pepper trees (I call them California's version of a weeping willow) and the bottle brush but not the Chinese flame trees.  I love seeing them everytime I'm in town.  And George, yes, the changing seasons is lovely but there are those special things in each place.  The only "surf" sounds I get are when I put my iPod to ocean waves & let them lull me to sleep at night,.  *_*

Michele:  thank you!  It looked like maple, but not being able to see the leaves closely, it was difficult to tell!  Again, it is so beautiful!  I am thankful for the photo we took together, Michele...And I am proud to share the same name with you, the name that we BOTH spell correctly!!!  :) take care, Michele

George:  you have posted beautiful photos, as well!  Bruce and I are both lovers of trees and all plants for that matter, and we really enjoyed your pictures from your past/present running trails.  We actually have some from la crescenta that we run and will post for all to enjoy tomorrow (after I take the pictures)...:)  Bruce and I were hoping to meet you at the reunion, but never had the pleasure.  Thank you for all of your interesting posts; we enjoyed them so much!

Bea:  your Chinese flame tree is outstanding!  You never cease to amaze me, lady!  You were not simply a flight  attendant, you later became a pilot!!!  Then, as though you hadn't done enough with your life, you turned around and became a horticulture expert, and now you display and care for dozens of rose bushes in your front and back yard! I am so hoping that you don't have to dig them up because of the water shortage as you indicated. I really enjoyed seeing you and Dick again at the reunion, Bea!

CHULA VISTA 3RD AVENUE--FALL COLORS

Third avenue in Chula Vista between "E" and "G" streets is a good place to visit for fall colors. See pictures below.

These trees were planted as part of the redevelopment in the late 1970s/early 1980s.  The City obtained redevelopment funds and Urban Development Action Grants (UDAG) from the Federal Government. Part of this was low interest loans available to establishments to be used for upgrades and improvements of store fronts and signs.  Projects had to be approved by the City Council sitting as a Redevelopment Agency.

Relating to one well know establishment, it was the only time in my life I though I might be shot.  I don't want to provide details in this public form, but if anyone is interested in the story send me a private message.  It turned out that our classmate Jim Grady's father--who was director of Building and Housing-- and City Attorney Don Lindberg "saved the day"

Note that to send a private message, go to the Classmate Profiles, select a name then under the upper left picture/icon click on "Send ..... a Private Message".  The message will only be seen by that person and he/she will get an email.

Here are the pictures of 3rd Avenue last year (2013) during the fall (note Docks and La Bella can be seen in the pictures):

So, a couple of years ago I was researching Halloween and wondered if there was trick-or-treating in Mexico. What I recall was that there is (sort of) and that the closest catch phrase translated roughly to

"give me some sugar or I'll turn you into a hipopótamo"

That's all folks - time passes, waits for no one!

George, loved the pictures of "Autumn In Chula Vista".  Since we moved to Iowa in 1975, I never got to enjoy that beauty.  It gives you a taste of what I see as I sit here staring out my window.  However, no Cali sunshine here.  In fact, in the words of Winnie the Pooh (can you tell I have little ones around?), "It's a blustery day, Christopher Robin!".   Now ..... anyone want to help rake??? smiley
