Thanks Sharon.

More trees and tree house from the South end of town. Dedicated to (you guessed it?) the "nose-to-the-stone" people and the "tree people".

Hey Bruce, its funny that you should post the picture of the "Nose to the stone" people. Just returned from Aruba, and its a big deal there. You're supposed to make a wish as you add a stone.

Here too, Frank. I see them alot when I am hiking. They are called cairns (if you cairn to know) and they seem Druidic, magical, It takes great patience and finding just the right, flatish rock to add to the sculpture (and a knack to know when it will topple and then start a new one:gijinka.)  I found an arrowhead last time I went hiking up behind my house, I found arrowheads at Otay Lake too.

My son would frequently find arrowheads and fossils here and, several years ago, when  they were dredging the man-made lake for snow-making, they hit a hard, stone-like object. The driver got out and it was the femur bone of a juvenile Mastodon!  An archealogical team came and the result was 21 species of mammals. There was a PBS special made about the dig..

CHULA VISTA--TREE CITY USA

Chula Vista has been a National Arbor Day Foundation "Tree City USA" for a number of years.

This is Mayor Will Hyde and me showing-off the flag from the National Arbor Day Foundation--many years ago.   It may have been the first time CV was a "Tree City USA":

Below are some Google Street Views of Tree City USA:

4th Avenue between "E" and "F":

Pepper Tree Road:

Rancho Del Rey Parkway:

Eastlake Greens (All of Eastlake is in Chula Vista City limits):

Here is another view of the trees at our house.  I have tried to keep in faith with "Tree City USA" over the years:

If the drought continues, Chula Vista will look like the town where I grew up in Chile:

Frank and Shayne:

I have been building small cairns for a number of years. Periodically go back to some to see how they're doing. Michele and I have one out on what used to be Otay Ranch that we call  "the rockpile" (isn't that a band?). Somebody finally knocked it down

People's reaction to them is a whole 'nother story.

There is one in Brujo Park, but I can't tell where that is.

I had not heard about the "wishing". I wonder what I've missed?

EDIT:

It's got me Stymied.

It's not too late to build one and wish again Bruce!

Now why didn't I think of that Frank? Probably, still contemplating Shayne's note.

Does anyone remember hitchhiking?  Stories?

I played basketball with Marvin Gaye at the Hollywood YMCA (end of the 1970's - he was a very good athelete.). Afterwards he invited some of us down to his studio on Sunset to watch him record.

Bruce, it seems you have in your life all you might have wished for.  Keep living the dream! .

I remember hitchhiking to Sacremento with Tom Parham (Parker), to visit Valerie Zelle, does anyone remember her? Instead of getting a couple of long rides we arrived after about 50 short rides. I forget how we got home but it wasn't by hitching. Love listening to Marvin and Tammi Terrell.

And a pathway that leads up to the stars

Remind me to show you the scars

           - Bo Diddley

Not many know it, but have you heard, Chele played tambourine for Bo back around 1970 or so. The red dress has long ago gone the way of the PSA flight attendant and basketball uniforms, but she still dances regulary. I wonder whatever happened to that tambourine..

I thought I had a pretty good memory, but Valerie Zelle? You got me there. Help me out?

David Heine (CVHS, 1963) and I planned a big cross-country H-H trip to Florida to visit Marty and Cheryl Chase, respectively. We never pulled it off, though Dave has some very interesting stories about other hitching adventures. I sort of know what happened to Marty, but Cheryl to this day remains on my "what ever happened to" list.

When I lived in Laguna Beach in the late sixties and seventies there was a steady stream of hitchers going up and down Highway 1 looking for what they never lost and/or a crash pad.

I never went very far, but I did get a few rides to UCI.

EDIT: APPARENTLY MICHELE HAS ASSUMED OUR JOINT IDENTITY AGAIN.

On the subject of hitch hiking, I (Michele) remember going to my dad to tell him (he still talks about it to this day!) Bonnie BLAIR and I wanted to HITCH HIKE across country for the summer.  I was thrilled about the idea, but my dad nearly had a stroke right on the spot! His veins bulged from his forehead as he struggled to remain calm in order find the words to respond;  he finally managed to say distinctly, "someone will knock you in the head....NO!" That not being what I wanted to hear, I responded with "YOU are CRAZY!  I don't HAVE any money!"  That continues to be one of the few times I have seen him speechless!  He was,and still is for 91 years , a huge and muscular football player/wrestler who is very "old school" for those of you who have never met him, so needless to say, the trip was canceled!

Shayne:  I have so many wonderful memories from our childhood!  I missed seeing you at the reunion very much and hope we can take you up on your invitation soon;  would love to catch up on old times!  Until then, I'll be "shakin' my tambourine". Ha ha ha!  There is never a dull moment!  Much love to you and yours....

Bruce,

You keep bringing back fond memories! yes

There was a club in downtown San Diego for a couple of years called the "Hippodrone", I saw Bo Diddley play there, must have been around 1968 or 69. He really rocked the place.

Also, in the late 60's I lived in Studio City and worked at a small car dealership in Beverly Hills (International Motor Importers - Whilshire and Bevery Glen). Marvin Gaye was one of our customers, he would often come bye and visit (he was a car guy), really down to earth. Very sad when I heard about his death. He set the seeds for my love of R&B and Motown music!

Is that really Michelle in the red dress? WOW! If not, you got me!

Speaking of PSA, earlier you mentioned Ginny McCormack. I thought she had continued with us through High School. Did she switch to a private schooI? I remember she was also a PSA stewardess? or at least was trying to be one.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim:

It's on Michele's iPhone, but I got a car photo for ya. I thought of you as soon as I saw it. Later

Michele isn't saying whether or not it's her.

Virginia transferred I'm pretty sure to the Catholic High School that is now in Otay Ranch. I'll ask her about PSA, I had never heard that. She became friends with my mom whilst preparing for her h-h trip through Europe.. We both like(d) her a lot.

Marvin was indeed very down to Earth. I never saw him perform live anywhere except in his studio, but that was pretty cool for me. Even with Michele's connections, I never did see Bo playing live.

The Catholic school that Virginia went to was in Coronado. She went to San Diego State for the first few years, and I would pick her up  several mornings a week, since she didn't drive at that time. She transferred to Berkeley and then on to Law School at UC Davis.

Our friendship has continued since those early years, and we talk at least once a week, so I am passing these messages on to her from this forum.

Thank you Peggy for remembering Valerie Z. When Bruce asked for more info on her I was at a loss (of memory). All I remembered was that she was our age and that Tom Parham (1963) was into her. You're right she was a sweetie! Another thing I remembered about her was her Dad's "Blab-Off Switch". It was the days before remotes and he had rigged a switch where he could turn the sound off on the commercials.
