OK - memory check time.

Which of these four did not attend the Naval Academy at West Point?

Choose as many as you care to and feel free  to opt out by not looking at this website any longer.

Aside to Dr. Maple: I ran over to Ol' Breezy this afternoon and naturally thought of you and Gary Baldwin (and oddly enough Karen Schuller; you tell me.)!

The view was amazing - Coronado Islands all the way to Pt. Loma clear as clear can be.

Trick question Bruce, and a good one 😄.  The answer is "none of them".   The Naval Academy is at Annapolis.  The Military Academy is at West Point.  ðŸ˜‚.   And the picture is from Homecoming Weekend for our 50th Anniversary of graduation - Jim Longerbone, Tom Hayes, and Dick Holmes all attended the Naval Academy and have remained friends for life. 🎼 "Four years together by the Bay, where Severn meets the Tide, then by the service sent away to places far and wide.  And still when two or three shall meet and old tales be retold, from low to highest in the Fleet will hoist the Blue and Gold" 🎼.   Beat Army!!

You win the contest Dick.

My memory fails as to what the prize is. It will eventually come to me.

BTW in my rambling around to get over to Ol' Breezy (the hill above the high school), I believe I passed by the houses of all four pictured below and in addition the home of the family of Jim Morrison (of The Doors) who lived for a time on Monserate Ave, right near E. James).

So who is this fellow?

BTW there is no evidence that I was channeling Morrison in this foto, in fact I have heard rumours to the opposite, though he had died by the time this foto was taken.

Class of 64- Happy New  Year.  2019 was filled up; hope it was good year for one and all.  Also hoping for 2020 to fill up as well.  To rembember forever is parts of life's richness. To learn what's coming is some of life's excitement.  Go Lancers.

Hi Bob:

As has been said, "you take what you need and you leave the rest",

Turning to the topic of Alzheimer's which one of my very bright and well-versed researchers/professors at uci had predicted would no longer be an unsolbved problem by 2020.

"The leading hypothesis on the cause of Alzheimer's is looking shaky, following a new study that tracked the disease's early progress in hundreds of volunteers.

For more than 30 years, amyloid plaques have been primary suspects in the cause of dementia. While the potentially toxic accumulations of protein still seem to be related, this research is part of a growing body of evidence that suggest they're actually latecomers to the disease rather than an early trigger.

Scientists from University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System came to this conclusion after analysing brain scans of individuals showing subtle signs of cognitive decline."

...

A second suspect – tangled knots of a protein called tau – is increasingly gaining attention as a potential disease driver.

In fact, another new study published this week used a novel kind of imaging to map tau in brains, finding it did a far better job of explaining the pathology than amyloid.

Got kale if you want it, extracted from another website thread

Saute it with chopped garlic

Add some good olive oil, and some Braggs amino acids

bacon fat instead of olive oil

Kale needs a frost to be sweet. The hotter it is, the more bitter

kale kuiche

kale sauted with garlic over grilled trout with a side of scrambled eggs

sauteed kale with preserved pickles of all kinds

Raw kale chips

Sautée it with olive oil, garlic, chopped almonds too.
chop it uncooked and put it in some chili or mix it with salad.
add some to cut up roasted butternut squash, with coconut milk/curry sauce

say, i like to stir fry in my wok, with coconut oil
and onions, garlic, and sweet small red/yellow/etc, peppers... :)
*sometimes i set fresh/or slightly fried tomatoes on the SIDE, that
were heated seperately...

you could add any side food, to mix in, as you eat...
meat, etc, or what, sliced almonds, etc??

you can also ADD whatever spices you like, in last stir of the stir
fry, and change the meal, to whatever suits your taste, best... :)

a soup... saute the kale with some oil and spices, add carrots and celery or other vegetables, and chicken broth

Chop it fine with red bell pepper, carrots and whatever else you have. Make a tahini dressing - (tahini paste), lots of lemon juice, garlic, a little water and olive oil, cumin and cayenne. Let it thicken in the fridge. Oh, add chopped garbanzos to the sald, toss with tahini dressing...yum!

You need to steam or at least macerate the kale most of the time, otherwise it can be tough. u can bake it and make chips out of it.

Puree with olive oil and garlic and add to sauces – pesto

bake it and make chips

Throw it in with cooking pasta for the last 4 minutes

Julton: spicy pickled okra is divine! Also, not healthy, but fried okra is sensational.

Deep fried

Add a chopped cup of it to the blender with your fruit smoothie contents. A typical one might be apple, coconut milk, frozen grapes and a cup of kale + some drops of stevia.

I use it in stir fries, stews, salads

I like to finish my dahl with it. Tasty! Simple to do and with the shelf life of kale, one average bunch is usually enough for two of my batches. I agree with the crack characteristics of the chips. I have a friend that makes them on the BBQ. Great for a vinegar style of dip

I made chicken soup on Saturday. I sauté each ingredient separately before throwing it in the soup pot.
By the time the meat is falling off the bones the kale is reduced to little green bits that act more like a thickening agent

I eat it raw, 50/50 mix with spinach to make a salad

Add a nice sliced habanero or jalapeño to your olive oil container. For best results keep adding oil to the peppers and over time add more peppers to suit your taste. Once the concoction ages it will add additional flavor to make spicy kale. Be careful when you heat the oil so the fumes won't burn your eyes

I bet kale would make some really nasty kimchee

Someone may have mentioned Kale chips:

http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipe/oven-roasted-kale

Saute in coconut oil with slivers of garlic and almonds, throw a can of tuna on it and stir until hot.

Also put it in liquados with almond milk and frozen berries, protein powder and chocolate powder

baby kale & baby spinach salads

It goes well with any German potato recipe

Must be a Chula Vista reunion photo (Class of 1958). That dude in the black hat looks a lot like my older brother Brian Maple. I don't recognize the others in the picture.

Righto Terry. - I need to pinpoint the year(s).

Principal Chet Devore (they named a stadium after him)

Footballer Dick Eshbach

Dick looks more "Eshbachy" here and the other guy could almost be Don Parish, but isn't.

The group shot - stated to be 2008!

Carolyn Hanano (far right) - may provide a lead to Dickie and Jerry.

Far right - Jerry Foncerada (he hired me for my first non-paper-route job at the Rec Dept. and he worked there his entire career). We used to play two-man volleyball in the gym (Fonce, Bradstreet, Wehmeyer, Hitchcock, Wilson et al. against the UDT guys. I do not specifically recall Byron Shewman but I'm sure he was there too.)

James "P" Miller (RIP) and that beautiful Greek woman we all know and love.

On Monday, the historic Hancil Cordrey Victorian house was severely damaged by fire.  The house was the third house to be designated a historic site in the late 1970s.   Hopefully insurance will pay for a restoration.

Does anyone know Kathy Klicka, Hancil Cordrey's granddaughter.  She attended Hilltop class of '65.

Below is a picture of the house on fire; information on historic site #3; and Hancil Cordrey's obituary:

Thanks George.

Vaguely remember Ms. Klicka. Remember the house well.

Rosalee May (Rosie) O'Day (Mason)

Thanks so much for the info on the fire, George and Bruce.  I heard the commotion but didn't know what was going on.

I want to wish all my fellow Lancers a very (belated) Merry Christmas and happy New Year.  I pray that 2020 brings only good health, joy, and peace to you all!

By the way, Bruce, the front house at 644 Second Ave. was my parents' first home. They bought it in 1941 when they first married for $2400.  They sold it in 1946 before I was born.  Guess who they sold it to?  The McCalls!  My mother always said she didn't like that house because the closets were too small - typical for a home of that era.  I can't imagine the multiple McCall sisters surviving there!

Hi Rosie:

Thanks for your good wishes.

I will likely send you an email, but in case I don't I have had occasion to describe you lately as "my pal since Junior High"

I knew part of your story, but not all. Thanks for filling in some details.

Rooms in that house are very small as I recall though I haven't been in it for a long time.

Foto is due to the next generation of McCall gals - C2?

The house at 644 Second Avenue--where the O'Days and McCalls lived-- is an official historical site called the Jennie MacDonald House.

The house is on my Historic Home Tour.  See flyer below.  If anyone is interested in the tour let me know.  I don't charge anything.

Jennie Mac Donald and her husband, William, purchased the home in 1908.  After her husband passed away, Jennie lived there with their son William Jr.  We believe that Jennie is related to U.S. Senator James Doolittle (no relation to the famous aviator) of Springfield Illinois.  Senator Doolittle was a friend and supporter of Abraham Lincoln.

Son William was a radio hobbyist in the 1920s and early 1930s where he tuned in commercial stations around the world using a receiver connected to a large antenna.  He would send a certified letter to a station describing the program. Stations almost always replied with a certified letter conforming the program.  This resulted in William being listed in Ripley's "Believe it or Not" a number of times.

Fortunately, the MacDonald house was recently purchased by Kris and Theresa Finch and they have done great restoration work. The Finches have opened up there beautiful home for my home tours.  Kris is a painter who teaches painting and his works are displayed in the house.  You can see his work on his website at http://www.krisfinchart.com/

Interesting that Theresa comes from Springfield, Illinois.

Corinne has also been very gracious by giving tours of her Victorian home as part of my historical home tours.

Hi George, I loved the last tour I went on with you. you have an incredible knowledge of historical homes and historical Chula Vista.   I'd love to go again as I have not seen the Second Avenue home for many years. So count me in if you get a group together.

Funny, I ran down there to the old 'hood' just the other day. Stopped in to say Hi,  but Ms. C. was out and about.

I have been checking out "Growing Up in Chula Vista" on FB.

Camp Cuyamaca was a topic.

So (you with me Terry?), here is the song our group performed after dinner on the final night of camp. The Camp counselor choreographed the whole thing. If I could get some of those cheerleaders from the junior high to assist I think we could pull off  a faithful rendition.

Anita?  Virginia? are you in?

So if anyone wants a tour let me know.
