Speaking of Route 66, it is rumoured that Terry Maple took a wrong turn in Tulsa and ended up in Georgia on his way to the University of Chicago and never looked back.

Caption reads "don't you know that descent means a decline, a fall"?

Dr. Ellen  Babock (U. of New Mexico) has tracked a number of design sketches for the neon signs that illuminated his way. Not many on the internet yet, probably will come out in book form.  You know, publish or become famished.

In the immortal words of John Milner: I don't like that surfin' ...  Rock and roll's been going down hill ever since Buddy Holly died.

UPDATE - Route 66

More recently, archivists at the university's Center for Southwest Research finished cataloging the collection and placing the sketches in protective sleeves. Plans call for the collection to be scanned and made available online.

Suicide knobs, while not specifically prohibited, are discouraged. This is not technically a suicide knob, more of a rat rod shifter.

This clip on model would do nicely.

Back to the primates. It looks like this poor fellow is suffering the same bursitis and/or infraspinatus/supraspnatus trigger point pain as I am. The trigger point probelm is often misdiagnosed as bursitis.

It seems to attack the left shoulder.

Treatable with the old "thera cane".  Note Grateful Dead emblem on hat. Is there a correlation?

Hello fellow Lancers,

John Moore called me today to point out the obituary for Coach Bob Tomlinson.  He only lived a couple streets from me on Montebello, and I saw him from time to time.  He died peacefully in his home on May 12 at age 89.  There will be a celebration of his life at 2:00 pm on June 18 at the Chula Vista Golf Course if anyone wants to attend.

Best to all.  Rosie

Thanks for this information, Rosie. Coach Tomlinson was a wonderful man. He wasn't just a great coach but a highly literate and articulate man. He coached my brother at CV High School and I was fortunate to play for him also. He influenced many players and many students who were fortunate to learn in his classes at Hilltop. I think of him often and now he and his family will be in my prayers.

Bruce, you wouldn't want to arm-wrestle that chimp even if he has bursitis.

Rosie thanks for sharing about Coach Tomlinson.  He was always Coach Tomlinson to me.  Never once thought of him as Bob Tomlinson.  What a crew that coached us.  Coach Tomlinson, Long, and Armbrust in our Junior Year.  I always had the impression that Coach Tomlinson was a no non-sense guy with a dry sense of humor.  He got a lot out of us.  It was a joy to play under their leadership.  I was saddened when he didn’t Coach our senior year. What gifts Coach Tomlinson gave. You never repay the best favors in life, but just try and pass them along.  We were blessed.

Bob

Thanks for the update Rosie.  It's nice to bring up old memories about teachers and classmates but sad it only happens when they passon.

I'm sad to hear the news. I always referred to him as Mr. Tomlinson. Both my sister and I admired and liked the man.

Not something I say very often about HHS teachers.

For those of us who lived in NC and  remember or have forgotten the coming of F.W. Woolworth

I can't say that I ran into Rosie there, but I can't say that I didn't either. The one below may have been taken in the photo booth there.

In 1961, Jackie Wilson's* manager, Nat Tarnopol, got Rosie a contract with Wilson's label, Brunswick. Brunswick did put out a follow-up single, "Lonely Blue Nights," which made number 66, as well as an album and another single, billing the artist solely as Rosie for all the releases. In the meantime Highland put out a couple of Rosie & the Originals 45s with tracks to which they had the rights.

(*Disclaimer I get no royalities from the estate of Jackie Wilson, though we are distantly related and while he could definitely out-dance me, I arm-wrestled him to a draw).

Trigger Points .

Trigger point manipulation works, no doubt. I could barely move my left arm and it even ached while lying still in bed.

Good (as new?) now. You can do it yourself, as I did (with an assist from Michele) or there are various chiropracters and massagers that do the  work for you.

A glimpse at the Chula Vista many of you do not see or know.

I stopped at the gas station/convenience store across from Castle Park High School tonight (you know the one where the guy was shot to death across the street a few years back).

Probably 75% of the signage is en Spanish

A guy wheels in a bicyle. Not an old person, a youth. Up front the bike is pretty sanguine. The rear wheel however is all metal, no tire. He's got a huge bag of platic reciclables slung over his shoulder. I can't see how he could ride the bike even if it had a tire.

The are more than seven million more stories here, perhaps verging on eight, in La ciudad desnuda.

MORE CHULA VISTA HISTORY: CEREAL, MARLIN AND BOWLING

Chula Vista's Dr. Karl Kellogg was the son of W. K. Kellogg founder of the Kellogg Cereal Company of Battle Creek Michigan.

Dr. Kellogg lived at 669 Del Mar Avenue, a historic home called "El Nido". He had an office in the home and one on the second story of the Melville building at the southeast corner of 3rd and F street. The home and Melville building still exist.

Dr. Kellogg was a member of the Chula Vista Sportfishing Club. Another member was Vern "Dock" Spice, owner of Dock's Cocktail Lounge at 317 3rd Avenue (still there). "Dock" was also the manager and co-owner of the Cee Vee Playdium-- the bowling alley on F Street.

The Sportfishing Club had a boat called the Cee Vee. Dr. Kellogg and Dock caught marlin from the boat and they both received the club's marlin trophy for the biggest fish.

Below is a clipping about the Club and an ad for the Cee Vee Playdium.

Below those are clippings from the Chula Vista Star News of August 1940 and August 1941 of Dr. Kellogg and "Dock" with their  Marlins in front of Dock's Cocktail Lounge. Then the photograph of "Dock" and his marlin. You can see the Melville building on the upper left of the photograph.

I visited the old CEE VEE, though  I never bowled there. Likewise the one down by the freeway.

Who is Kellogg school named for?

Bowling alleys provided at least some of the tp that got used on some houses around town.

Is this a test? about Kellogg School? I've been to the George Gillow seminar on historical structures in Chula Vista and can report out that it's named after Dr. Kellogg who lived on Del Mar and had an office on the corner of Third Ave and F Street.

Dr. Karl H. Kellogg was the son of the Cereal King by the same name. Dr. Kellogg died a couple of years prior to the school opening. If memory serves his widow was there the day the school opened?? I had been transfered to Kellogg elementary from Cook elementary due to boundary changes. Many of our fellow Lancers made up the first Kellogg graduating class. Same thing happened when they opened Castle Park High School! I posted class pic's of Kellogg earlier.

A link to Hazel Goes Cook and the lemon orchards of Chula Vista! Some interesting vintage shots, but I think some/most were posted earlier.

Chris Cook, Hazel's son, lived across the street from me and I worked at a number of  the CEE VEE elementary schools (say, e.g. Greg Rogers and Fred Rohr), so I knew them. I don't think I ever trespassed on the grounds of Kellogg (say K E   double-L  O-double-G, Kellogg's not best for me?).

So who is Vista Square named for?

If you can name anybody in this photo other than Stan Boland your a better man, woman, person than I am.

Bruce,

Vista Square was named after James "Vista" Square. Mr. Square was well known for his invention of a high speed bowling ball that was used at the Cee Vee Playdium (Ref: CV Hysterical Society). wink

Seriously, though, I remember bowling at the Cee Vee Playdium. I heard that if a ball was thrown hard enough it would crash through the back wall of the building and end up in the park. I recall that the building was made of corrugated metal.

Does anyone remember bowling at the Cee Vee?  Also has anyone heard of the story of bowling balls crashing through the back of the building?

There is more to Vista than meets the eye which I will attempt to address subsequently,

However, I believe that Daddy-O is the only one fit to address the wall issue since he was the pinsetter there for many years.

Parenthetically, I never rolled a bowling ball, nor skated on thin ice until graduate school.

Pretty sure I had a cherry coke at the Cee VEE the night I was avoiding Butch Hindman on Third Avenur,

Raymond Chandler de Vista Hill. Was it?

I checked him into a Chula Vista sanitarium and five days later drove him home. He said he was sorry to trouble a friend. We didn't talk much. It was the kind of moment between people that is too revealing to risk small talk and too unsettling to permit much more.

1956 - Lives in London until May. Forced to return to La Jolla for tax reasons. May, hospitalized in New York City for alcoholism and exhaustion. June, returns to La Jolla and rents an apartment at 6925 Neptune Place. July, hospitalized at a Chula Vista clinic. December, goes to Palm Springs and Arizona

La Jolla home once owned by novelist Raymond Chandler sells for $6 million (2013)

Lyle, John Dixon, Robbie, me and many others were at Vista Hill (Paula, Christine), no trace of Chandler.

BTW, I'm scheduled for epiretinal membrane surgery in July, which may (or may not) alleviate some of my spelling problems.

It's hard getting old, but somebody's gotta do it.
