Oh god, Mary Miguel, my friend from 6th grade who lived at the end of my block on Barret Ave. in the magnificent Country Club Estates, those shacks down below Cook Elementary, which was located at the end of the ever-so-elegant Princess homes with all their bric-a-brac.  How awful architecture was from the 1950's. Mary, who told me she was Hawaiian ancestrally.  Whatever.  We didn't see much of each other past 6th grade but she is an iconic memory of those years living in Country Club Estates since you couldn't miss her house as it sat square at the end of our dead-end street and she was often outside there when I went by to say "Hi" to. You are remembered.

Mary Ellen and I were neighbors as well as good friends. I met her when I transferred from Chula Vista High to Hilltop after my mother remarried. My step sister Pam Wright, Mary Ellen and I were pretty close. MaryEllen was dating my husbands ( boyfriend back then) brother. I will always remember how Mary Ellen helped me getting to know Hilltop High School since I was pretty much ignored by the students there. One of my fondest memory is all of our family going to her house for a traditional Hawaiian Luau. They were such loving family that I enjoyed being with.

I did not know Mary Ellen was Hawaiian, but I can picture her soulful dark eyes.  It was probably difficult for many of our classmates who moved here during high school to find their niche. I am sure there are thousands of stories we will never know about each other.  May Mary be in a good place and at peace.  It is hard to imagine that she is gone - especially after never seeing her again after high school...
