We've been thinking that this January has been colder than we remembered. Is it old age setting in?

Historical December and Janurary data.

By way of comparison. Here's Ridgway Colorado  (about 39 miles from Telluride and 11 from Ouray) another place I'm interested in.

Funny, I can find data for Vail, but not for Aspen. What?

For the car afficianados:

I've discovered that the car show I went to with Burger most likely was in the "Electric Building" in Balboa Park. I'm pretty sure Ed "Big Daddy" Roth was there.

Here's some notes from the rather extensive Prowlers of San Diego club site.

Willie Clarks 1927 T roadster at the Electric Building Car Show venue in Balboa Park in San Diego.
The picture was taken 60 years ago. A little contrast adjustment showes a couple nice trophies on the running board.
The car was purchased from Willie by Oakley O’Strander who later sold it to his uncle.

http://www.san-diego-prowlers-hot-rod-club.com/history/in-the-1950-s/

Oakley lived right up the street from me on Halsey.

Technically, it is "Ostrander" and I'd always thought that he built it.

The Electric Building burned down along with the original Old Globe in 1978 (arsons).

Electric Building, Balboa Park before and after.

A lot of time and money went into building that Ostrander car. I wonder what became of it. Likewise Eddie Winder's Model A, which also appeared in shows at the Electric Building.

OLD GLOBE:

I've gone to performances at the original, the new and the outdoor stage, but not for a while.  Lest we all forget, Balboa Park is a jewel. Also, for locals, admission to a rotating set of exhbits is free each Tuesday of the month.

1978 ---- Arson destroys the 43-year-old Globe on March 8 (the arsonist was never caught, but a firebug had set several blazes in the park that winter). The Globe quickly reorganizes, moving ongoing productions to other theaters around town and building a 620-seat outdoor Festival Theatre in just 52 days. The Shakespeare festival opens on the new outdoor stage June 16 with "Henry V."

The Highlander will soon become Thr3e Punk Ales  Brewery.

...  Chula Vista is a very large place, with the East Lake area boasting one of the highest median incomes in the county. In other words, lots of room for craft beer to grow. "We're not done," he concludes. "We still have a long way to go."

Chris Cook (son of Hazel Goes) lived across the street from me on Minot (the house later occupied by Suzanne Phillips - Where are you Suzanne?)..

He was considerably older, but sometimes took Baldy and I for rides in an "orchard truck".  I found out a while back that both he and his brother died from cancer at a not ripe old age.

Here's a nice tribute to his mom with some fairly rare photographs.

I also discovered just today that Oakley Ostrander (the owner of the car show car a ways back) passed away in 2014. The car is in the process of being restored.

Bruce,

Another trip down memory lane! The car shows in Balboa Park! My dad started taking me to them in the late 50's what a great time! I remeber seeing the "T"-Bucket and lots of chrome, beautiful paint and the first displays that had mirrors under the cars! Before moving to IB and then CV we lived for a short time in Lomita Village (Skyline area)! Scary now but we could walk to Paradise Mesa Drag Strip. Saw a lot of guys (older of course) that I was to meet later in life. Don't know if you ever get to the DelMar shows (put on by the GoodGuys Club). They always have a great Woody exhibit and over 2K cars. It's in early April. If you ever attend, look for us! We have an old 1961 Rambler American. My wife loves (has a couple) Corvette's but when we became grandparents I suggested she get an old Rambler to drive (oh, yeah that went over real well!).  "Her" Rambler has a Speedway full cage chassis, a 454 ci BB Chevy, a Viper 6-Speed and a Quick-change diff. The cars nickname? "Wicked, Evil, Mean and Nasty".

Cheers,

Jim

Jim:

Hadn't thought about the mirrors in many years, but I do remember them. Weirdo shirts too.

Have to say you're further into cars than most (all?) of us. If we were ever to get that yellow 1930 sedan I put a photo of up a long time ago, we'd be eligible to join the still functioning Prowlers.

They have to like you though.

We saw another old car out near Balboa Park that had a "Turks" identifier on it.

I was told that the Clark/Ostrander 27 'T' is still in San Diego and being restored to 1950's condition.

P.S. - I've spent a little time (not much) looking for Butch recently.

Beaver Cleaver too.

I guess today it might be called a gang.

It could have been in response to objections to the weirdo shirts that Bill Burger got the "sweatshirt day" instituted (?) at the Junior High. It got a lot of kids sent home to change. I made it through the whole day, probably becasue I went home for lunch which is when Mr. Anderson & Company rounded up the offenders.

I was wandering down memory lane again yesterday and discovered, to my chagrin that, CV Heritage to the contrary notwithstanding, Ray's shoe repair where we used to pick up our annoying horseshoe taps, is no longer Ray's.  It's now Daniel's but it looks the same inside as always.

Yardage City was once next door to Dock's and then moved up closer to Chub's, right?

No sign of Lanette.

Here's Ray now.

And here's that old yellow Ford which someday may be ours and your friend (and mine) Jayne Walter before she went blondie.

Jeff Phair (HHS 1970) to be inducted into San Diego Sports Hall of Champions.

Wasn't there a Liz Phair. Did the familhy own a clothing store on Third Avenue.

Funny story about Officer Bob (confidential)

events of 1968

... when in doubt give the ball to Jeff Phair, who got the call on 11 successive plays and scored from 9 yards for Hilltop’s first score in a 14-6 win over Clairemont

Bill Walton was about to become a nationally known basketball player at Helix and his older brother, Bruce, 6 foot 5, 270 pounds, was the anchor lineman at Helix

...  brooooose ...

More to follow.

hi Bruce. Yes there was a Liz Phair. There were four kids in the family. And yes, they did own a clothing store, the Highlander, on 3rd avenue and I believe also in the CV shopping center.

FROM MEN'S CLOTHING TO CHULA VISTA'S EASTLAKE DEVELOPMENT

Jeff Phair's late father, David Phair, along with his partner Chris Franovich founded the Highlander Men's Clothing store at 259 3rd Avenue in 1950.That location remained the store's headquarters as they expanded to 14 stores all over San Diego County.

The last Highlander was at Grossmont Center in La Mesa.  It closed a few years ago.

Jeff Phair was a VP at the Eastlake Development Company when it developed a large portion of the expansion of Chula Vista to the east.

Jeff and his son, Kirk, operate The Phair Company located on Bonita Road. It is a real estate and land development company.

Thanks Bruce and George. What a team. BBG, BGB, GBB? HHS grads combined to offer investigative & reporting capabilities equal to the BBC.

I was pretty sure, but it's nice to get confirmation that my memory is still working.

From clothes to brews.

Officer Bob used to get his "civies" at The HIghlander. That's all I can say at this point.

I'll have to clean this up later.

I don't know why I would know this, but didn't the Phair family live over in the vicinity of Corte Maria?

Rosebankers?

Bruce, The Phair family did live on Corte Maria, at least in 1952 per the telephone directory:

Thanks George. Now if I could only remember how I knew that. I certainly didn't deliver the paper to them.

Hi Andie. Didn't your sister live over the in the vicinity of First and G?

George: If you have some free time, what about Stallings and Hindman?

I know Finis Jones worked at The Highlander in CV. Can't recall if the store where Finis and Jay Hollister in the National City shopping center was also The HIghlander. Finis, in addition to being a champion beer jugger, also taught me how to properly fold a sweater.

Bruce - My family lived on the Alpine side of the Alpine/Minot circle between 1st and 2nd and F and G (Chris Hoover lived next door, and Patty Leckman lived in back of our other next door neighbors, on 1st Ave.) We moved away in the summer of ’63, right after Judy graduated. She went to UW Seattle, and I was stuck in a strange time-warp high school for my senior year....truly a parallel universe.
