Speaking of education, anybody care to hazard a guess at the number of folks from the 1964 HHS graduating class, who obtained what was for all intents and puposes a free education in the state college/university systems  (let start with just California).

What does Sherwood L. Washburn have to do with this? Nothing really except that he was a world famous Antrhopologist, who we got to hear for (all intents and purposes), free.

Dr. Washburn was among the first to assert that tools, hunting and gender division were critical in human evolution and that humans evolved from an ancestor that walked on its knuckles as the great apes do. In a 1978 article in Scientific American, he wrote:

''Gorillas and chimpanzees (and the men who play some of the forward positions in American football), however, have developed a form of locomotion called knuckle-walking that enables the apes (if not the football players) to walk normally as they carry objects between their fingers and their palms.''

There were a lot of them at one time. Very difficult to find anything local.

For the less car savvy, the plaques were usually displayed in the back window 'package tray'.

RFK in CV

Whilst it is pretty clear that Robert Kennedy campaigned in Chula Vista in 1968, there is some controversy as to just when he was here. The L.A. Times has a May 20 date, Craig Carlson who took the photo downstream has the date June 3. Craig has a lot more detail so I'm inclined to favor his date. However, could he have been in CV twice? I saw him down at the Civic Center. Interesting that the caption says "Monday night" (both days were Monday).

Credit: Craig Carlson (HHS 1968)

L.A. Times has Kennedy debating McCarthy in SF June 1 and in Garden Grove on June 2. He was spending a lot of time in California. Pretty strong evidence that RFK was at the El Cortez Hotel in the evening of June 3, which doesn't rule out CV in the afternoon. He was exhausted by the end of the day June 3.

RFK, Andy Williams, & Rosemary Clooney.

Rosey/Rosy/Rosie

Rosey Grier was one of RFK's body guards. Much later, I got into an argument with him at the gym at UCI. It wasn't about needlepoint. He won.

Funny coincidence, I ran into the other Rosie at the UCI gym too.

I should have recruited her to witness me dunking a volleyball.

BOB"S NEWS STAND - 324 Third Avenue. (Not far from Peters Feed)

I can't think of everything and one of the things I cannot think of is Bob's last name.

The only known preserved example of Bob's advertizing, along with what could very well be a descendant of Bob's dog. Date uncertain, likely the 1940's.

Donnie Wilson (RIP) actually had a letter from his mom which allowed him to purchase cigarettes "for her' on file with Bob. I hung out with Donnie for a while in Junior High. He had one of those 'fingertip' jackets with the pinstripe sleeves (black?). I do not recall the extent of his Sir Guy collection.

Bob's was just out of the photo (viewer's left).

At least 1959

Professor Cronin has pointed out that because of the Oregon primary (which was on May 28, 1968) it is more likely that RFK was in Oregon than California around May 21. He also observed Mr. Kennedy in CV on June 3, which now makes three of us (though I did not recall the date, the other two did).

About one minute of a Kennedy speech in Corvalis here.

SKATEBOARDS

My first skateboard was the 2 X 4 model with roller skate wheels, which we all came to know and love. I used to ride it at the Junior High so it must have been Eighth/Ninth Grade. By high school I had acquired one pretty much like this. You could put your feet parallel just like you was "on the nose".

Close, but no cigar. Modern wheels.

Shayne Maree Schuller (Morgan Sledge)

My brother and I made one like your prototype for each of us and started loosening the roller-skate wheels for more turnability, (not much) and launched down E Street hill. Despite hitting gravel and crashing, which  required several bandaids (and red mercurachrome, or merthiolate) these became our new mode of transportation around town, parking our bikes in the garage for awhile. P.S. Did that red stuff have mercury in it?

SMSMS:

Mercury? I sure hope not. I still have a half full bottle.

Just looked it up. Yikes. It had a lot of mercury in it. A mecury-free version is available now. I think my bottle is iodine.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

It looks like I'm not going to find any dramatic video, like I did for Tim Danielson, but let's give a nod to Terry for his running prowess.

800 Meter Run Mark

1961 Bill Rainey, Crawford 1:58.8

1962 John Garrison, Helix 1:54.1

1963 Bob Hose, Madison 1:54.9

1964 Bob Hose, Madison 1:51.1

1965 Terry Rogers, Hilltop 1:53.4

1966 Terry Rogers, Hilltop 1:51.6

I was probably in town, but I did not  attend this one. Same place, some three years after Tim broke 4:00.

Hilltop High won the Kiwanis bowl 35 to 33 for CVHS.

So they get the trophy this year and the $1000.

This video is amazing to me. The last time I went to K38.5 was about 1966. There was essentially nothing on the coast between Rosarito and K-38.5. Lyle's parents had a trailer right near and there was a small shack at K38.5.

I read it on the internet:

Good old days - Back in the early 60's some surfers from Chula Vista found what was then called K38 1/2. A Mexican family lived in a "house" made of tin and cardboard at the entrance and charged 25 cents to open the gate. They had the place all to themselves for quite some time. Eventually other surfers traveling on the Coast Highway saw the cars with racks on the cliff and the secret was out. Those were great times at K-38 1/2.

That's all there was folks.

For Terry Maple. I'm pretty sure this is a legitimate recording at Pacoima Junior High in 1958. He mentions returning from Hawaii (where he played for Michele along with Buddy Holly and "hula'd around").

Una poca de gracia, no?

The sculpture, Powering the Arts, is up and running now. When we went down to view it there was a fence surrounding it. My thought was, what?, grafitti protection. The fence is gone. I'm taking a wait and see attitude.

Many of us were: 17 in 1964, 34 in 1981, 51 in 1998, 68 in 2015

So 75% of our time has been spent (saved) since high school. May explain why so many folks are missing here. The 'other' 75% carries more weight than the first 25%..

For the surfer/car people, there is a woodie event in Encinitas this weekend. Maybe most interested people are aware of this? Just happened by yesterday and I found on the internet that it continues to tomorrow so thought I'd mention it in case there are a few of you unaware of it.

STAGED/FAKE AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS

The Automobile Club of Southern California estimates that 8% of automobile injury accidents in Los Angeles county involve fraudulent claims.

Criminals can stage an accident and sue the innocent driver and insurance company.  They may have accomplices in other cars or as pedestrians posing as witnesses.

They particularly target luxury cars and commercial vehicles.

Here are some common staged accidents:

Swoop and Squat:
The criminal’s car cuts in front of you and he slams on the brake, forcing you to rear-end his car.  He will claim injuries to himself and possibly other passengers.
An accomplish in another car may be alongside of you to prevent you from serving to avoid the car.
Drive Down:
You may be in a situation like, for example, coming out of a parking lot onto a street and the criminal waves you to enter the road.  Then the criminal speeds up and hits your car.
The criminal claims that you drove out in front of him.
Side Swipe:
The criminal deliberately sideswipes you in dual turning lanes when you are on the inside lane.  They particularly look for cars that may drift out of the lane.

It is important to take down as much information as possible including pictures when in an accident.
Don’t totally trust anyone including witnesses' and/or a tow truck that suddenly appears.

Here is a link to an AAA site with information on these staged accidents:

The article says to call 911 if there are injuries.  I suggest always calling 911 if you suspect that an accident may be staged.
