Consequently Jefferson and Lincoln were announced as tieing for the team win. Lincoln's share of the title lasted only two days, however, as a review of the Meet films moved Vernus Ragsdale from 3rd to 5th in the 100.
I wonder what happened to the films?
Here's some of 1966. Local boy Tim Danielson winning the State mile (Berkeley). If you don't like the Rollin Stones (which I'd say is a choice in very poor taste here), you'll have to turn down the sound. Tim became the second high school runner to break the 4:00/mile on June 11, 1966 in 3:59.4 (Balboa Stadium) if I recall correctly.
Richie Valens played at Clairemont High in September, 1958.
"He sang two songs that I recall, ‘Donna’ and ‘La Bamba,’ and some other newer songs, all on the red clay, in the broiling sun, for the better part of an hour.” Local newspapers at the time reported the performance as a four-song set.
“Many kids broke into impromptu dancing, and that egged Ritchie on. Him playing, and them dancing and celebrating, [it was] a musical fiesta. A South L.A. Latino kid, connecting with 2,000 young Anglos…it was historic. No autographs or pictures…things were more structured in those days.”
Technically, Richie was more of a North L.A. Latino kid. My first commercial programming assignment was in Pacoima
Below is a video of a portion of the PBS documentary Remembering San Diego in the 1950s showing Rosie Hamlin. (You can see the full hour documentary on my post # 403 approximately page 17. I put these on YouTube as unlisted.)
I believed for a long time that Rosie H. had lived in National City, then I read she went to Mission Bay High and recorded Angel Baby in San Marcos. Apparently, she did live in my original home town of National City and attended Granger and Sweetwater both, followed by Mission Bay High School.
It's true that the song was recorded in San Marcos.
The equipment was an old two-track machine. We had to record it over and over. Probably thirty times or more. Each time someone made a mistake, we’d have to stop and start all over again. When we finally had the take that everyone liked, we thought we were done. Then the guy says, “What do you want on the other side?” We had completely forgotten about the flip side of the 45. Lucky for us, we had our old friend Blueford Wade along. He was a vocalist who sat in on gigs with us when he wasn’t fronting his own band. Noah said, “Hey Blueford, why don’t you just ad-lib something.” That’s how Give Me Love made it on the B side
...
After recording for Highland Records, Jackie Wilson and his manager suggested that I come to New York along with guitarist Noah Tafolla and record for the Brunswick label. We had the honor of opening for Jackie Wilson at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater for six shows daily. Also on the bill were Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Marcells, Benny King, Maxine Brown, Carla Thomas , The Isley Brothers, Del Shannon, Bobby Vee and Bobby Rydel.
I consider myself fortunate to have worked with Johnny Otis, Big Joe Turner, Big Momma Thorton, Thurston Harris, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. I’ve worked with Freddy Fender and all of the East Los Angeles Groups. Malo, Tierra, and El Chicano to name a few. When the Rolling Stones came to America, I opened for them in San Diego. John Lennon recorded Angel Baby saying little Rosie was one of his favorite American Artists.
Victoria Matthews (at age 12) does my second favorite version of this great song.
Interesting that you brought up those who have passed on. My mind has wandered into this region a number of times recently. Might have started with the photo of Jeanie B. & Rick.
There are all those who have died and then there's a whole bunch of folks who just seem to have vanished.
I've tracked down a few who I wondered about that appear to just want to remain anonymous, but there's that whole group who nobody seems to know anything about.
From the 1961 Falcon. I wonder who has the original photo.
For example: I notice that Leslie Gano has 'd in, but that appears to be all. So all we're left with is Scott Crockett's poem in our English class.
Bruce in the picture, I think it is Nancy Kuebler, me (my back to the camera), Don Montell (bent over with back to the camera), Dean Butterfield, Judy Schnorr, and one of the "Twins" (Chris I think).
I saw Scott Crockett here in Aspen with his family over 20 years ago.His wife at the timeJan, (January) has re-married,has a condo here and I see her occasionally winter and summer. She was a champion tennis player. and still lithe and lovely.
Phil: Right, bent over guy is too tall to be Paul Hall.
Shayne: Michele has a little history there too with the Pierce family. Brother Jon played basketball, but was a better tennis player. I wonder whatever happened ...
Did Vanna go to Hilltop. Oh wait, that was Jo. There was Duane Eddy and Forty Miles of Bad Road, but Vanna's surpassing that one soon, she's been flipping those letters since 1975.
I love Vanna. Ran into her in the supermarket parking lot in Burbank once. Her stretch limo was parked in the no parking zone and Vanna was inside buying, ahem, a package of a feminine product. I could just hear the driver saying, "I'm not going in the store and buying that".
Speaking of TV, does everyone recall that SDSC lost to Queens Univ. of Charlotte on 11/15/1964 in the GE College Bowl? Connection to HHS? Yes indeed, the link is Marilyn Eldridge.
In addition to competing “against a well-drilled, knowledgeable team,” the loss was apparently due to the tradition of Eastern schools placing a “strong emphasis on factual knowledge while Western schools place more emphasis on idea-oriented education.”
Okay, definitely NOT a Renault. They had rear mounted radiators and cooling ducks down the side. Also the Renault rear fender wells were flat at the top. The Bluebird has rounded rear wheel arches and a similar "A" and "B" pillar, BUT it also could be a Fiat 1100, AND there was a Fiat dealer in Chula Vista (Harrison Motors)! The Fiat "B" pillar looks more like the original!
Speaking of local talent, Remember Thelma Camacho from Sweetwater High! Her band "The First Edition". I always liked them (but liked Angel Baby more...). Think I read somewhere that she has a business (Jewelry store?) in Chula Vista. Her backup guy went on to perform for many years!!!!
Speaking of Fiats. This belonged to Dennis Forqueran in Imperial Beach.
There was a club in IB called the "Mau Mau Car Club". By the time we hit high school I think the clubs were in decline. I can remember guys coming to visit Chris Cook (RIP - Hazel Goes Cook' son), who lived across the street from me with plaques in the package tray. I recall "Coachmen", not much else.
