The picture in Bruce's message 1240 that shows the swastika is a very old picture of San Diego Bay.

Before WWII the swastika was not considered a horribly evil symbol.  It was considered to be a symbol of good fortune and well being.   The US Holocaust museum has a short history of the symbol at: http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10007453

The symbol is still being used in Indonesia and India.  It was used on ships, even after WWII.

When my dad and I had a 14' outboard motor boat we would sometimes go near ships docked at the 10 Ave. Marine Terminal and once saw a ship from India with a swastika. We were quite surprised. It was like this picture of a post WWII ship.  Note the small symbol up high on the the bow.

So the picture in Bruce's post was probably on a promotional card that was sent to shipping concerns in India and/or Indonesia to promote San Diego's port.  In those days there was a belief that San Diego would be the largest port in Southern California--not Los Angeles.

Finally, note that the swastika symbol used by the Nazi's (and still used today by neo-Nazi's) is rotated 45 degrees counterclockwise from the swastikas that were used as symbols of good fortune.

Hope that answers the question.  The people in the port did not realize the horrible symbol it would become in a few decades.

George to the rescue yes. I'll see if I can run down some dates on the photos (and I'll expand the other two pieces). All images complements of Biblioteca del Congreso.

How did it all happen?

In the 1880s, the San Diego Land and Town Co. laid out a grid of five- and 10-acre parcels to create the community of Chula Vista on 5,000 acres of the former Rancho de la Nacion in southwestern San Diego County. Because the company wanted to build a stable community of businessmen and “gentlemen farmers,” it required each buyer to construct a house “of approved taste” and costing at least $2,000.

When the market collapsed in 1888, the company offered 20 acres of free land to anyone who would agree to plant the acreage in citrus, a sales tactic that eventually led to Chula Vista’s claim as the “Lemon Capital of the World.” After five years, the homeowner would own his 10 acres, and the company could sell the rest.

OK, a shameless plug. Please consider this event for your Saturday--all day or part of the day. Saturday, March 21, 1 p.m.,  at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park will present San Diego Sings. Twenty + choruses and choirs will perform the debut piece "How Can I Keep From Singing?" commissioned as part of the Centennial Celebration of Balboa Park. Each chorus/choir will have an opportunity to perform 2 additional selections as well. Festivities start around 10:30 a.m. and close around 5 p.m. In addition to the group sing (1000 + voices) at 1 p.m., Peninsula Singers will showcase their songs at 2:15. There should be some amazing voices, as the San Diego Master Chorale will perform. The event is FREE. Parking will be a challenge, as there is a 5K that morning, but should be cleared off by 10:30. Did I mention that the 1 p.m. event is AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION? So come join this massive sing-a-long, learn about the groups participating and maybe decide to join a chorus/choir.??

Chula Vista was San Diego's local Homestead Act, "forty acres and a mule", both taking place in the late 1800's.Fascinating.

May your heart be full with song, Teresa.

George and I are contemplating a campaign to change the name  to Chula Vista de Rancho de la Nacion con Otay. We may kick it off at the Balboa Park Fete.

My parents ended up living down the street from the Point Loma Nazarene college.

It been interesting reading all of your Chula Vista histories, and has made me realize what an interloper I was - dropping into Chula Vista for high school from the rootless world of a military brat.  There is a richness to all of your stories and a connection to each other and the town that is very moving.

I am leaving tomorrow for White Sands Missile Range for the Bataan Memorial Death March.  There is a 97 year old ex-POW there who was in the same  camps as my father and survived the same hellships that my Dad survived - I am hoping that he knew my father and will be meeting him on Saturday.

I realize that my history and rootlessness is very alien to all of you, but also realize that I value the connections that I made during my brief stay in Chula Vista..

Well Patty, there was high school and a few times thereafter, but I 've never felt all that  disconnected.

Good on your dad, your dad's memory and you.

EDIT:

After reading C's comment above, it all comes back to me. It was the politics. I worked with  my older sister (canvassing IB for example) on the Kennedy campaign, that is part of the connection. Then you went off to Stephens and I saw you next, in of all places, The Long Bar.  I don't recall you wearing the trench coat that night.

Hi Patty!

I just saw your post.  Funny I was just thinking of you today (and I have not been on this site in awhile). I hope you have a meaningful connection on your journey this weekend.   I am certain that many of our classmates  have connections to the military - which brought so many to SD - including the parents of my first husband (WC Beaurgard - CVHS '58) .  His parents (both solid Mormons) came from Utah during WWII.  Beauregard senior was drafted into the Army & she worked on the assembly line at Convair - ala Rosie Riveter.

My own family did not have military connections but I have met so many residents here that did. I am just grateful that they left Imprial Valley before I was born!

PS:  I am very glad that you came to Hilltop !! I remember you as a breath of fresh air - and a free spirit.  I was very attracted to that.  I remember that you worked as a volunteer on JFK's campaign for Pres - was that in our sophmore year??  Not only were you a political activist - you wore a very cool trenchcoat!!

Hope everything is looking up for you.  I am verrry busy helping to raise my two grandsons - Elijah and ASA, ages 5 mos and 2 1/2 years -  keeps me very busy BUT I would love to see you whenever you are in town!....love you XOXO

Speaking of trenchcoats, Leslie Gano, who in addition to being the subject of Scott Crockett's not too well known poem:

Leslie Gano

Where did you go?

also wore one.

Others that come readily to mind were Judy Bush, Marilyn Eldridge, and my long-lost Cheryl Chase. 1962 Yearbook Judy (Chess Club), Marilyn & Cheryl (sans coat) (Art Guild).

EDIT: Jenny Beenfeldt (politico & squaredancer ) appeared in a dream. She sported the trenchcoat also.

This is none of the above and she's not reclining on the senior lawn (at least the last time I checked).

Filming of The Stuntman La Jolla Children's Pool. Can't film there now. Either:

a) It smells too bad

b) Would disturb the occupants

Wow, it seems that I should get another trench coat!

What I remember most about working on JFK's campaign was being in the "Official President Kennedy" section when he came to San Diego State's commencement and as he was leading the graduates out of the stadium I became completely hysterical yelling, "President Kennedy PLEASE shake my hand!" repeatedly with the intensity that only a 15 year old girl can - and he chuckled and stopped the entire procession and came over and shoot my hand - I thought I had died and gone to heaven!

And Corinne, I remember you as beautiful and smart and so completely your own person!  I am looking forward to coming to San Diego to see you as sson as I can!

First leg of the journey here, Eckhart Tolle in the cd player, spending time with a friend in Phoenix, getting to New Mexico today.

It's hard to see her, but Patty is the one in the trenchcoat, trying to lend a hand. I went to that ceremony as the SDSC also.

I remember a tour of Washington DC and the New York Worlds Fair that was offered for our Senior Class in 1964.  I remember Mr. Rice talking about it.   I recall that the price was $300.  I really wanted to go but my parents felt it was too expensive.

I remember Mr. Rice talking about meeting with Robert Kennedy and that Congressman Van Deerlin helped unload the bus.

So, does anyone remember such a tour?

Los Angeles Union Station

Bruce posted a picture of the Los Angeles Union Station.  A neat day trip is to ride the Amtrak train from San Diego to LA.  Then have lunch at the Traxx restaurant at the station: http://www.traxx.la/

Be sure to sit on the left side of the train going up.

A few years before Pam's mother passed away, we took her on the train to the Union Station for lunch then to the Reagan Library.

The station has been used in a lot of movies.

Raquel Tejada Welch

I had heard, a number of times, that Raquel Welch's family had lived in the Chula Vista area and that her father, an aeronautical engineer, worked at Rohr.  Her father, Armando Carlos Tejada, was an aeronautical engineer who moved with his family to San Diego area during WWII.  But the only thing I could find on the Internet was that in 1942, they moved to the Bay Park area of San Diego which is east of Mission Bay. (However, part of the Montgomery/Castle Park areas were called Bay View.  It could be that a mistake was made.)

When Raquel's parents divorced her mother took the children to live in La Jolla.  Raquel went to La Jolla High where she met her future husband James Welch.

While still Raquel Tejada she was the weather girl for the TV-8 Sun-Up show with Bob Mills.  She was also the "Fairest of the Fair" at the Del Mar Fair in 1958.   She later divorced, left San Diego and was a waitress in Texas, before moving to Hollywood and fame.

Here are pictures of her on Sun-Up and with Don Diego (Tommy Hernandez) at the Fair:
