I remember Carl Ramsey. He was a drummer in the HHS 64 band, and a genuinely NICE guy. What a talent he was. I visited his webpage (http://www.carlramsey.com) thanks to Rosie's info and took the liberty to share one of his beautiful paintings here. He was so talented. I never knew. As I remember he was a pretty quiet guy.

Here's the saxophones and other wierd woodwinds of the band from the HHS 64 annual. The goofy looking guy in the upper left is me. I still play an instrument, though it is an electronic woodwind now. I mostly play classical music for my own enjoyment. Such a long time ago, but in some ways it seems like yesterday. Bruce VanPatton is holding the Bass Clarinet (on the far right), and at the bottom left is Norma Bendickson. I would have come to the reunion if I had thought Norma would show up. She missed the 25th.

Sad to hear the news of Carl Ramsey's demise. Cancer has put some serious dents in the HHS class of 1964 bus. I have no idea whether it's more or less than other high school classes, but all the same it is more poignant when it's someone you know/knew personally.

Hi Newt:

Good to see you making additions to this forum. I think there are a number of us who could profit from a  little tutorial on grabbing images out of books. My efforts in the HJHS Falcon extractions leave quite a bit to be desired. So if you have some spare time .... However, they don't pay well around here.

I enjoyed reading the Message Forum! Brought back a lot of fond "Chuley" memories. Hard to explain to people what a great town Chula Vista is and how great it was to grow up there in the 50's and 60's. I found a few grade school pictures that I haven't seen on the forum. We moved from IB to Chula Vista in the fall of the 4th grade. Lived off East "L" St. on Monserate, which at the time was the last street in the city bordering Otay Ranch property. After 5th grade Kellogg school opened (notice the small class size!). About half the 6th graders went to Hilltop until Castle Park opened in our Sr. year. Like many of you I went to 7th grade at Castle Park Jr. High, and then to the 1/2 day 8th grade schedule at Chula Vista until Hilltop Jr. High opened.

Hi Jim:

Thanks for your posts and photos.  Keep 'em coming. Thanks too for the update on Butch. The CPJHS book has no photo and has his name listed as Dowayne. Do you think the spelling was a misprint? He came across as a "hard" guy, but I'm thinking he wasn't as tough as he appeared. I guess we'll never know.

He did give me cause to be nervous when I took up with his girl friend Carolyn Coombs. I can't remember when or what exactly she told me about her status, but along came Butch down Third Avenue one Friday night and things appeared as we say today "sketchy". We talked it over and he told me everything was cool.

One other person I remember from CPJHS is Nancy Cluck (sp?). She was pretty and as I recall verrry sexy. She used to sit behind me in (Mrs. Orr's?) art class and tease me alot. Did that mean she had a crush on me? Time will tell I spose. Never have found any info on her.

I believe the Bruce below is Bruce Medlock (sp? again). All us Bruce's stick together you know (Springsteen, Lenny, Robert "The" ..., Van Patten, Willis

Hi Bruce, I think that is Bruce Medlock. I didn't know him before 6th grade. He had just moved to the school area. His dad was a CV policeman.

Butch's name may have been Dowayne I can't remember. I know his parents had left the state but he stayed in CV because he was very close with his Grandma who was quite elderly and in a local rest home. He would visit her every day. On your own in the 7th grade, that would be harsh!

Officer Bob lived on Potrero Ct. His property ajoined my parents house along the rear fence line. He had a couple of children that were a bit younger than us. I'm not sure if they went to CP or Hilltop. One great guy when it came to knowing how to treat people.

Enjoyed your bits on local racing. Although I was not living in the area when the local stock car tracks were popular, I went to many races at Balboa Stadium when I was in grade school. I was friends with our classmate Becky Snelling in high school. I think her brothers raced at South Bay and El Cajon and if my memory is correct they lost their dad when a car crashed into the pit area. A very sad time.

Jim

Regarding Anne Chenoweth (now Hulse), I encountered her in some of my explorations of the "darker" side of Chula Vista. She wrote this book:

Murder in the Neighborhood

The Raymond Henry Goedecke Murders

The Murder of Mark Williams

The Killing of David Weilbacher

The Shooting of Felicity Boonstra

If you're interested. Not very expensive to download and an interesting mechanism for self-publication.

I have spent some considerable time puzzling over the fact that such seemingly homogenous circumstances of growing up in our little town produced such disparate results amongst it's habitues. Stay tuned, it may come out as an article some day.

This is probably a duplicate post, but it ez enough to skip if you don't want to look. It does have just about everything you'd want: great song, two beautiful woman with two beautiful voices, laptop  dobro ...

Jim:

There's quite a bit on Officer Bob on the 1963 page (you can look, but you better not touch, i.e. post without the approval of some committee or other). I was a patrol boy so I knew him, but not too well. I did email back and forth a few times with him this year and I sent over some old photos of O.B. (catchy-huh) to the 1963 forum and someone else posted them for me.

Another CV cop, Crosier, who I used to see a lot at the YMCA had  many stories about him (and stories about all sorts of goings on in CV - the man does like to talk).

I think you're spot on about Butch. He built a persona that got him by in his world which had a rough exterior, but in my limited dealings with him, he was just as regular as any of us.

OK - Where did Braswell go to elementary school? I think we've covered Longerbone, Piety and Wilson, but I did not know that Mr. Longerbone was a Fire Captain. My father was Chula Vista City Judge and an Attorney.

I  think one of my most gruesome memories of High School was hearing of the Ray Goedecke murders. I sat in the same Latin class as Ray in 10th grade and couldn't believe that 1) someone I knew would do that and 2) such a seemingly nice person would do that. I think I learned a good lesson: not everyone is what they seem on the outside, and we all have our limits.

Reminder to Bruce. The name game. The Vogue.

Jim:

Gordy did in fact make it out and the last I heard was residing in the Midwest I'll spend some time to track him down since I consider him a buddy. I got a hold of a Frank B.'s email address quite some time ago and sent him an email, but I never heard back. Gary Baldwin was in Vietnam also. The last time I checked his brother and mom were still residing around the corner from my old house on Minot. I asked Gary's brother Bruce (though he was always Brucie around the neighborhood) to give Gary my phone and email, but I never heard from him either.

You might appreciate what happens to an MC if you just let it sit long enough. (1965 Ducati)

Newt:

Don't forget Raymond Goedecke killed again after he got out of prison and then got out of prison a second time because of the weak evidence the prosecutors had. He did attend one reunion while out.

Hi Newt-It's good to see your photos and read your comments. Must make one correction. The photo you ID as the annual staff is actually the Lance (newspaper) staff. Sorry you will miss the reunion, it's going to be a fun time.

Bruce and Jim -

I talked to Don Rice last month in Chula Vista.  He graduated from CVHS in 1964.  He said he had been keeping up with Gordie, and that he was a Department Head in the Art Dept at Bowling Green University.  There is a Gordon Ricketts on LinkedIn, but I can't tell if it is our Gordie.  Don said he would try to get him to the reunion, but I don't even see Don signed up.  We'll see what happens.

Good to hear from you, Jim.

I spose the 221 missing folks could be just about anywhere.

Here's a map of alumni locations. Two outliers, Guam & Australia. Map is color-coded for the number in each state represented (key at bottom).

This is by state. If I had a list of City/States it would be better. If I can figure out an ez way or someone can provide a list of city/state combos then I could do a seperate map for California (153).

Bruce Wilson - YOU should be a historian.  I just went through all of the posts here in the Message Forum while my 2 year old grandson took his nap, and everything you have posted is AWESOME.  You should put together a DVD of all of this info, and I for one, would buy it.  I just love traveling back down memory lane and seeing pictures of lots of things I remember, but don't have an actual picture of.  Thank you so much for ALL you have contributed.  I am sure others have enjoyed it all as well.  Looking forward to coming down there next week and seeing everyone who can make it!  GO LANCERS!!

Why thank you Sharon. It was nice of you to say that.

If I hadn't moved back down to CV to be with my mom during her last years, I most likely would never have indulged in this, but since I was at it, I figured other folks would find it interesting too.

Hey Phil:

I gotta give the "having a good day" awards to Stobaugh and Spurgeon, though one up and one over from Stobaugh, Stevenson?, is a close runner up. Speaking of names, for the longest time Jim was called Snoball.

There as a time when adults (especially authority figures and certainly not Martha Hassler) were referred to as ol' man and ol' lady. Hence Ol' Man Anderson and Ol' Lady Harzrtzell.

Similarly, boys seems to lose their first names for a while in junior and highschool and became Stobaugh, Spurgeon, Stuckey, Baldwin etc. Nicknames as I recall could trump the last-name only nomenclature, e.g. Baldy.

So, I remember Workman (Freddy) and I riding around in Grey's (Bob) old Model A on Halloween night chucking water baloons at anything that moved. Neither Crosier, nor Zeitelhack busted us. In fact, I do not recall anybody ever getting in trouble for water ballooning. Probably wouldn't hold water in today's environment, most likely misdemeanor assault.

Water balloons lead naturally to  ....  kites? - Berkeley Kite Festival (didn't have it when I was there).

Are you out there Dennis? This photo is borrowed from Dennis Mason on the 1964 CVHS message forum.

Michele lived in this type of housing in Hawaii.

This is also from CVHS site. It is a map of alumni locations. It can take about 30 seconds to generate and warns you to wait, then it is interactive. Looking into adding this feature here.

CVHS has grads in four countries: Columbia, Costa Rica, New Zealand & United Kingdom. Interestingly, when my mom traveled to New Zealand she rode a tram up to the top of a mountain and the proprieters of the restaurant were CV ex-patriots.

Jim:

I just found my little hammer in my tool box.  If I looked in my jewelry box I could probably find my key and HJHS 61 pin.  Last week I found my 1964 Gold Metro League Cross Country Championship little gold track shoe. After spending a good part of the spring cleaning  out my parents house after Dad died, I can see that I come by pack ratting naturally.

Jim...thanks for memorabilia pics...I, too, still have the HJHS '61 pin and HHS senior key and my senior ring. I must remember to dig them out of my jewelry box and wear to reunion. I never would have thought of it without your message.
