Rosalee May (Rosie) O'Day (Mason)

I just got this off of the Hilltop 1966 website and thought some of you might want to participate.

Aug 15 is Mr. Rice’s 99th Birthday as well as Mr. Rice Day in CV. Let’s show him how he touched our lives as a teacher by sending cards. If he wasn’t your teacher you can still send a card as an alumni or perhaps through a military connection.

Jerry Fike sent this to me.  It is very powerful.  It includes our own Tom Rice.  You will probably need to copy and paste into your own browser.  Best to all of you.  Hope you are all staying safe and healthy!

Presentation on Eisenhower visit to Chula Vista by Bud Wilson.

This is a presentation that Bud Wilson made to the Chula Vista Rotary Club, last week on October 23rd.  The visit was 60 years ago on October 21, 1960.

The presentation begins 3 minutes into the video--after an introduction of Bud.

I was a guest at the Rotary Club meeting.  I made a comment at about time 41.28.

Note they mentioned the head waiter Nacho.  Nacho's son Gustavo Romero is a well know pianist.

I would like to hear from any of you who were there that day and if you know anyone who is shown in the presentation.

Thank you for posting this. My mom worked for Bud and Dick Wilson and helped set up this visit. I was able to clip a photo that had my mom in it from 60 years ago. I appreciate seeing that.  Also I was able to see Mr. Bill Padelford, my band director participating in the zoom meeting. I was there at the time and saw the whole proceeding. It was an exciting time.

Thanks to all for work done to celebrate Eisenhower visit 60 years ago.  On October 21, 1960 I was 14 and almost 15.  Still selling newspapers, a bunch of us Star News’ Carriers were there in force.  We were selling programs and wish I had one of them today.  “Get your program, get your program right here”, seems like what we were trained to say.  The president was coming and we were working capitalism to the max!!!  How do you spell a ball headed golfer??? IKE.  I really liked Ike, what a president, what a leader. We will learn what Americans want tomorrow.

Best to all of you.  Wish you all the best.  I have been in Stanley for most of last Month and until the 8th this month.  Marcia and I have already voted.

Stay well my Friends

Bob

George and Bob, Thanks for your posts about the Eisenhower visit. I was there that day; it's the only time I've seen a US President in person. I'm wondering if the man in the picture with Billy Casper (in profile, dark hair, looking to viewer's right) might be Bob Hummel, longtime golf pro at SDCC? Just a guess. Thanks for the info about Nacho's son. I had no idea he was such a well-known pianist. Nacho was such a sweetheart; even after a twenty-year absence, he still called my dad by name. Jackie Connelly and I both have happy memories of him and the milk shakes he made for us.

Just a short note, I attended that event at the SDCC with President Eisenhower. I remember it to be pretty exciting and also I was sad that we were so far away that it was very difficult to see him. So viewing the slides was great to get a closer view of the event. I went to the home of our classmates Chris and Kay Zakarian and there were a number of us walking from their home, on L Street at the end of Second Ave to the event. I believe there was a gate through which we were able to enter the golf course, in their yard. The only people I remember meeting at their house were Judy Schnorr and Nancy Kuebler and maybe Karen Brixius. And I don't think we could hear any speeches or singing or music from way back on the edges of the huge crowd on the golf course. The public address system back in the day must have been limited.

Also I was thinking about a couple of things George, one is I think Bruce Wilson's father knew Bob Wilson and maybe Dick Wilson and if I remember correctly his family stayed with the Bob Wilson's when they first moved to Chula Vista. And one other thing, I think Larry Sorenson's father was the person in charge of the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce back then and he may have some recollection of hjs father's involvement in the event if the Chamber of Commerce was involved.

Nice to recall memories of our childhood and learn more about such events that were otherwise unknown to us because we were the little people on the edge of the huge crowd. George thanks for sharing it with us.

Eisenhower Visit Program

Here is the program.  Bob Wilson was a member of both Rotary and Kiwanis clubs.  Bob McAllister was a member of Kiwanis.  How many people in society and especially in government pass The Four-Way Test today??

I was looking for evidence of my mom's attendence at the Luncheon of the President Ike visit and Bud's slideshow provided it. In the center of this slide sits my mom with Ruth Minden. They both worked for Dick Wilson and mom helped set up the whole affair since Dick was the organizer. My mother, Madeline Perdue, worked for Dick Wilson for 35 years!  I know I attended and my memory tells me I was in the band, but  others dispute that since I was in Jr. High at the time. I personally think that Mr. Greeno sent a few of his best members to be part of it. It was great  to see Mr. Padelford introduce Bud Wilson in the video. He was my favorite person at Hilltop.

More on Eisenhower Visit

Rosie sent me copies of 8mm movies taken by her father and grandfather of the visit to Chula Vista by President Eisenhower on October 21st, 1960. I did some editing and included photographs provided by Bud Wilson.  Here is the video:

Thanks to George!  He is such a tech genius and blesses us with his talents.   I was fortunate to have a family who loved to take movies!  My dad was a Rotarian who took some of the footage, and my grandpa also.

I am also sending Sharon footage from our graduation.  She is going to work her magic with it, and hopefully you will all enjoy it!

Best of everything to you all. My thoughts are with my Lancer classmates that you are all healthy and happy.

What a great video montage, Sharon.  And thank you for using your amazing skills to take us all back through some very old memories!  I'm so glad my folks included so many of our Lancer friends in their movies.

Adding thanks to Rosie, Sharon, George - all who contributed to this video. I recall being there but not having this front row view. . . very nice!

Kay,

I did not contribute to the graduation video.  Sharon did the amazing job of artistic editing and sound effects.

I only did the Eisenhower visit movie.

Hard to believe it will be 60 years that we graduated from Hilltop JHS.

I have never seen any movies or any photographs of either of these graduations. This was the first time I have seen anything.

A question to all; a blast from the past. In our Senior year, Brian Belchers was the foreign exchange student from South Africa.  Did anyone stay in touch?  Does anyone know where he was from in South Africa?  Might be heading that way with our Classmate Walt Hess next spring.  If possible, might be fun to check in and catch up.  Thanks for letting me know.

Bob

Hi Bob!

Call me crazy, but I recall someone on this forum sharing that Brian Belchers lived in Washington state. I await some more knowledgeable source to confirm or deny. How terrific that you and Walter may travel to Africa. I envy you. Please keep us posted on this big adventure. In gratitude (for everything), -- Kay

Brian Belchers lives in Monte Serro, California per White Pages.  That is, also, what his classmate profile says:

18100 Banncroft, Monte Serro, CA 95030.

Thanks everyone, Brian, Kay, George:  Brian and I are in touch.  He is on vacation in Hawaii and will be heading back to Bay Area about 11th. Looking forward to catching up with him.  George, I had to watch u-tube video on Cruising to South Africa.

I’m joining a group of friends to cruise through Desolation-Gray Canyon on the Green River in Utah.  We won’t be out for a fortnight and I won’t be on a ship, but rowing my 17.5 Green Aire raft.

Accommodations, if we are lucky, will be sandy beaches with a view, hopefully without mosquitos.

I too will be getting home about the 11th of June.  I haven’t been there before, so my chance to be on a brand-new river to me.

Enjoy the day’s getting longer.  Hope all are well.

Best to all

Bob
