But what about OB?

OK, back before there were OB Longhorns and OB stickers, there were indeed movies in Ocean Beach.

It should be pointed out that at one time there was in fact at least one guy in IB.

Continuing on up the Silver Strand

March 18, 1947.  I did not visit the Village theatre in Coronado until later but have enduring relationships with folks there yet today, as does Scott Crockett..

Later.

Never attended a show at North Island, but we did manage to wrangle our way into the enlisted men's club on North Beach (Breaker's Beach) for some underage beer drinking..

Theater

Never played any golf there either, maybe Ronnie Yarbrough or Pete Moore did?

Right here on the other side of the fence is where I lost my board (what's a leash?) and got arrested by the MP's. I had to sign a document that said I would never trespass on the base again. I haven't.

It does get windy in Otay. Two forty-fifty year old, 80-90 feet tall, trees went down on Thursday.

Extremely rarely seen photo of nature boys Dean Butterfield and myself playing ping pong with what could be David Schuller or Bruce Lee.

Why ping pong you may ask? Well, I used to play at the Youth Center and I wa pretty good. Not as good as my father who was the champ at his law school. Funny, I never played him.

And of course the "other" Bruce, who I was never able to beat either.

North Beach Dog Beach - we used to take my little Yorkie Ruby there, but she didn't like dogs. She believed she was a person.

Never saw this guy at  Dog Beach. Rumour has it that Longworth has some of this gear. Did old blues get a lot of noise complaints back in 1965?

Despite my ping pong prowess I never made it onto the Huffington Post web site, as did Michele (about halfway down the page - PSA Jets). Her face don't show clearly, but for some reason I'm able to recognize her right away.

Before moving on to the Pt. Loma theatre chapter, here's a couple nice shots of Ft. Rosecrans Cemetary. Jay Hollister (and perhaps his dad) and my former wife's father reside there. It's been a long time, but Jay is on the bay side of the point as is Ann Wilson's (her maiden name and she grew up in Pt. Loma) father.

Enjoyed your tour of the strand and up to North Island and Fort Rosecrans.   The movie theater at North Island is a throwback to patriotism as each movie starts with our National Anthem and you're surrounded by our sailors and soldiers; it's a special moment.   The golf course at North Island is very fun and remodeled about 10 years ago - if there are some who would like to play it, I'm willing to set it up.  Dick

I too enjoyed your trip up the strand up to North Beach.  That was our go to beach, from the time we got our drivers licenses until I left for the Navy. IB was too close to the TJ sewer system, Silver Strand cost $, and PB, MB, & OB were too far to go.   When I was stationed at North Island in 1970, I played golf at the golf course, and bowled at the bowling alley, but never saw a movie there.  The trunk of my car looked like a sporting goods store with a bowling ball, golf clubs, baseball mitt, etc.  I was ready for anything.  I was also a bartender at the enlisted men's club.  In 1970 it was on the bay side of North Island, with a view of downtown SD & Shelter Island.   In 2014 I was on base for fleet week, and asked some of the sailors about the EM Club.  They seemed to think it didn't exist any more.  A military base without alcohol?  What's the world coming to.

I have lived in Bonita for 43 years and never saw a storm like we had last Friday (Jan 20th).

Hundreds of trees fell in Chula Vista/Bonita area.

There were high winds.  I guess 50 to 60 miles per hour.  Lots of trees came down including one in our back yard.

Two large Torrey pine trees, across the street from Jerry Rindone's house, came down on top of 12,000 volt power lines.  One utility pole was broken in half and another pulled over.

We live up the street and were without power for 36 hours.

George:

The funny thing is that it didn't seem that windy to me here in Otay. The two trees downed here were about 80 and 90 feet tall. Luckily no damage or injuries (well, except to the trees).

Dick:

Thanks for personalizing the North Island theatre a bit for us. Despite working for a golf course company for a number of years I never could get into the game. Partly because of the time factor, but also I figured if it was hard for Jerry West then it must be a difficult game to master.

BTW, Yarbrough is the pro at Coronado and Pete Moore did exceedingly well in an athletically inclined company up north a  couple of states.

Back to Pt. Loma. Michele's father did quite a bit of flying whilst in the Navy, so when they had the 100 anniversay celebration of Naval Aviation here in San Diego, we  took him out to Pt. Loma to observe the big fly-over.

It was stunning to see the planes, but even more impressive was the sound. We were near SPARWAR on the Point right where they flew over at pretty low altitude.

Short sample, but it doesn't do justice to the sounds.

John:

Mission Beach was to goto for SDSC in the mid-sixties (over-the-line before it went bonkers, original sand castle contest), but I had more fun down in Baja. I'm still amazed at what folks got away with risk-wise and legal-wise back in the old days.

North Island:

It looks like the club has been converted to a condo-like development.

North Island beach cottages is how they are advertised.

The North Island club has not turned into condos. It is a Navy Lodge for military personnel only. The large horseshoe shaped building the rooms are all suites with small kitchens. I haven't been in thec ottages but I assume they are also large suites. It is designed for families and other personnel to use while they are in transit, waiting for permenant housing, temporarily in town for business, and if there are any vacancies, for vacation. The old officers club is now an All Hands Club and is on the hill behind the Lodge. There is another less attractive lodge located closer to the BOQ. 32nd Street has a lodge as well but not as fancy as the beach Lodge. Accomodations at the c are highly sought after - an O5 and his family can stay in a 2 bedroom suite for $120 a night - not bad for oceanfront accomodations.

Well JKB-Mac that's why I said "condo-like".wink

But where is the building we did our underage-drinking in? As I noted, I signed an agreement with the Navy never to trespass on the base so I won't be much help here.

Contrast_wise I think we used to pay $1.00/night for beachfront accomodations at K38.5, unless we stayed at Lyle's parents trailer or went with DC (free - Dave and the "administration" were tight).

Kidding aside, thanks for filling in the blanks.

I believe that there were both an officer's club and an enlisted men's club at one time. My ex-wife visited the former, whilst Jan & George Ronis, me, Christine Macevicz, Lyle Hitchcok, David Heine, possibly Wehmeyer and who knows who attended the latter. I cannot remember who had the ID. I think it was someone from Coronado or was it Dick Rogers?.

This is likely a reprise, but here's a clip from Lyle's movie Island Magic featuring Gerry Lopez and Carlos Santana. This has to be dedicated to Jimmy Hitchcock and Robbie Bartlett  Requiescat in pace

Trivia? Lyle and Gerry were built very much alike. Lyle could have faked some of the footage except that he didn't ride goofy. Yes that is Michele @ about 2:20..

Getting back to baseball. I know there are some aficianados who check in from time to time, but this is dedicated to Carl Ramsey (who I actually could hit pretty well - as in hit his pitching).

Go figger. Jimmy Eshbach was the first to point out Dizzy's unique past tense version of slide./

Tickler file. Getting out of sequence here (what did Einstein or was it Emerson (not Gary) say about consistency?). (Unicorn, music venue on Garnet in PB, golf foto, Laguna South Coast Cinemas (aka Lynn Theatre).)

Who remembers where the borderline between Baja La Jolla and La Jolla proper actually was/is?.

Mithras & Unicorn. I'll have to fill in the blanks later. For now, my father, the deptuty DA an Judge was very anti, the now legalized marijuana and patronized these places was sure the dread weed was being peddled there.

Note the lack of area code.

More bitchen stuff (tune up those neurons for the derivation of 'bitchen' quiz).

Laguna Beach (1940 here) was similar to IB in a sparsity of people, but at least there was a woody. I lived in Laguna whilst at UCI (right up Diamond St. from Bette Davis' house).

So did Tim Leary live there you say. What's the relevance? It just goes to show where a Ph.D. in Psychology might get you.,

Did Bette ever attend the Lynn?

Lyndon “Lynn” Aufdenkamp (circa 1916). In addition to having been a prominent figure in Laguna Beach’s early twentieth century development, Mr. Aufdenkamp was also the  city’s first cinema operator and the namesake for all of the movie theatres which have operated in Laguna Beach over the past ninety five years.

Does anyone remember the Circe's Cup (coffee house, blues bar, poetry?) that was located in one of the alley ways at SDSU? I remember going there with one of our classmates in 1963 or 64. The police raided the place (not sure why, maybe curfew?) and she hid underneath the table (afraid her father would ground her for life!). We both escaped out a back door without being caught. Saw a mention of it (the place, not our adventure!) in an article by Lou Curtis in the following link. Lou had a small record/music shop at Five Points, off the corner of India and W. Washington St. (actually Andrews St.) in the late 60's. I lived in an apt on Titus St. in the "Colony". A few other classmates lived there as well (Billy Burger, Roger Schmidt, Jim Serniuk ('63), maybe a couple of others).

Yes indeed Jim -  Circe's.

There was also a sandiwch store in the alley called "The Two Bit". If you can think that far back, two sandwiches for twenty-five cents seemed like a deal even then. Used to pick up a couple after doing my swimming class with Steve Williams.

Another small venue was The Upper Cellar. I was going to get into these small venues at some point.

Lou, not too long ago sold this record/music store, Folk Arts
